Joe the Plumber has traded in his tool belt for a reporter's microphone and notepad, taking on the job of war correspondent in Israel for a right-wing website.

Joe the War Correspondent, real name Samuel J. Wurzelbacher, rose to minor celebrity status in 2008 after he argued with Barack Obama about the Democrat's tax plan during the U.S. presidential campaign. Wurzelbacher is now covering the Gaza offensive from the southern Israeli town of Sderot for pjtv.com.

Curiously, considering his new job, he doesn't think that the media should cover war and instead would prefer a return to World War Two reporting, with the public watching weeks-old war footage in theatres.

"To be honest with ya, I don't think journalists should be (allowed) anywhere near . . . war," Wurzelbacher told other reporters in the Israeli town of Sderot. "You guys report where our troops are at, what's happening day-to-day, you make a big deal out of it. I think it's asinine.

"I like back in World War One and World War Two when you go to the theatre and you'd see your troops on the screen and everyone be really excited and happy for them."

"Now, everyone's got an opinion," he added.

Wurzelbacher added that "war is hell and if you're going to sit there and say, 'Look at this atrocity,' well, you don't know the full story behind it half the time, so I think the media should have no business in it."

Joe defends Israel

Citizens of Sderot "can't do normal things day to day" like wash their hair, because of the fear of Hamas' rockets, the former plumber said.

"I'm sure they're taking quick showers," he said. "I know I would."

While touring a facility of spent rockets with the head of the Government Press Office, Danny Seaman, and an official government photographer, Wurzelbacher provided smiles for the veteran journalists watching him at work.

"I have thousands of questions but I can't think of the right one," he said at the start of his interview with Seaman.

While he may have had difficulty finding the right question, he did have a lot of anger for those criticizing Israel for the offensive into Gaza that has killed more than 870 Palestinians. Thirteen Israelis have died since the military operation began, four by rocket attacks.

"Why hasn't Israel acted sooner?" Wurzelbacher asked. "I know if I were a citizen here, I'd be damned upset."

Calling himself a "peace-loving man," Wurzelbacher added, "(but) when someone hits me, I'm going to unload on the boy. And if the rest of the world doesn't understand that, then I'm sorry."

Wurzelbacher said he took the job to cover the war because he was an "expert on media bias."

"I was on the short end of the stick," he said, comparing his situation to Israel's.

He complained that the full story of Israel's operations in Gaza isn't being reported and the mainstream media are demonizing Israel.

"It's asinine when someone is firing upon you and the world is coming down on you," he said. "Common sense has gone out the window."

It is Wurzelbacher's first trip to Israel. He said that he has been "embraced" by Israel because "they know I have no agenda but the truth."

Western reporters said that while the appearance of America's most famous plumber might have caused a strange look or two among the press pool, Israeli citizens at a busy cafe did not seem to recognize him.

To Israelis who managed to avoid some of the ridiculous sideshow on the U.S. presidential campaign trail, he's just a Regular Joe.

Joe the Plumber has as much credibility as a reporter as Olmert has as a peace-loving man.

Joe would prefer to keep us all in the dark so that real war crimes could be permitted without anyone ever finding out. In a war the first thing out the window is the truth. Thank god not all professional journalists and reporters are like Joe, but then again Joe is not really a professional reporter.

Joe the Plumber ... for a right-wing website."
Right-wing? As opposed to what? Left-wing? CTV? Darn that man! He's actually going to give the other side of the story?? After all the media manipulation in Canada, I'm not sure we're ready for this.

Oh, maybe Joe is a breath of fresh air. I agree with him in that I support Israel beating the terrorists. Most of what Hamas sends is pure propanganda...the experts in lying. I, and many others, are becoming very desensitized to the plight of the people who support terrorism. Terrorists have no honour and will kill their own to win a propaganda battle, they are shameless and Allah will have a gift for them when they meet...and it won't be paradise I'm sure.

This makes quite sense to me. The American president kisses Israel's ass while an American plumber goes to clean their sewage!.

Tell it like it is? Wayne and Joe give your heads a shake. If Joe the Plumber likes nicely filtered war news, why is he going to a war zone? A war zone full of semites that would ruffle the feathers of a red neck like Joe. I'll bet he cant stand Jews or Palistinians. Its clear J the P is trying to surf his last gasp at fame. Farwell you misguided has been.

For a minute I thought I actually stumbled upon a humor column. Is this dude serious? I laughed out loud quite a bit reading this, although the topic couldn't be more grim.

I wonder if the people in Gaza are taking short showers too?

How many rockets would be fired across the border from Mexico before the United States would say ok, enough is enough? I would guess it would take one rocket!

Wow again. Get the reporters out of the area.
Leave the two sides to it. It's been going on since 1945 let it solve itself one way or another.
There will be lot less deaths and injuries that way than prolonging it like the "Do Goodies and liberals" want to do.
The IRA conflict although quiet now is a glowing example were deep down beliefs (I want to use the publically incorrect word Rel**ion) will last and last until one side is either destroyed or gives in.
I am not an unsympathetic or callous person, but long drawn conflicts like this (and others) will never be solved by Truces and or Political intervention.
As an aside why on earth is the United Nations trying to deliver essential supplies by road. Haven’t they heard of parachutes?

I wonder if Joe the Plumber will report on all the children getting killed in Gaza.

That might inspire the war supporters here in Canada to call for military intervention in Gaza to protect the little girls and boys who need to go to school.

That's what we're all about, isn't it? Our foreign policy? About providing security so little children can go to school? The kids of Gaza sure need security right now, a whole lot more than the kids in Afghanistan.

Come on Joe! Bring us the news so we can try and get involved in more military messes abroad and clowns like you can profit from it!

He can not be any worse than the PRO HAMAS reporters that are there. Hamas tells a lie and all the reporters say it is the truth. The world is watching GAZA, Israel is not going to deliberately target civilians, but our press says yes they do. GO JOE

Joe the Plumber, Joe American, the average Joe. I guess that it goes to show what passes for journalism.
He said that if someone hit him he would "unload on the boy". This is how I see the conflict in Gaza. It's equal to a child throwing a rock at a grown man and then having the grown man beat the child bloody. He has a "right to defend himself" doesn't he?

The latest news from Gaza talks about the Israeli army using an unknown type of Gas against the Palestinians. Hundreds were rushed to hospitals with serious problems and doctors do not know how to help them. I hope that Joe the plumber will urge his Israeli friends to tell physicians how to treat the civillians who inhaled this unknown gas!.

A true Republonut. News media should be banished from war zones, yet he is an expert on "media bias". What are his credentials? None. He isn't even a real plumber. How many foreign languages can Joe speak? What does Joe read? I think I know the answer to both my questions. Yet somehow Joe knows better than just about everyone. I can't wait to see Joe and Sarah on the next republonut ticket.OMG, the USA is in trouble. I think it really is too late, sorry to say. What does Joe know about the Dark Ages? The republonuts seem determined to take us there. start with burning down the libraries. Then kill off the news media..oh wait...they've already been doing that for the last eight years.

And for today's weather forecast. In the morning we have a 40% chance of flurries caused by the system moving across Southern Ontario. In the afternoon there's a rocket storm warning as Hamas death squads have been sighted skulking in the outskirts of Toronto. Watch yourselves during lunch time folks.

Seriously people, this man is a hero for doing what's right and speaking out against the obscene media bias against Israel. Would you really not expect the army to protect you from murderers and thugs and just sit there costing us tax dollars?

And, why is CTV covering this story of a guy who is neither a plumber, nor a reporter?

This is a serious conflict and many women & children are at risk and many have already died.

I used to sympathize with Israel, however, I have reconsidered. This current conflict is much the same a the Lebanon conflict a few years ago! It reeks of unproportional force and casualty rates in the the Gaza conflict at 100:1.

Don't feed Canada this sensationlistic "reality TV" story when so many are dying, starving, without electricity, without proper medical care.

Shame on CTV.

Wow...so scary to think that someone can actually be so ignorant. Joe should be ashamed of himself. Did he ever bother to ask why Hamas is shooting rockets in the first place? Does he have any idea that Gaza has been seiged off of the world for the last year and a half???

I guesse Joe thinks its o.k for starving children to hundle around their mom's dead bodies. And I guesse he also thinks it o.k to refuse the Red Cross to help...

Thanks Joe, you made us realize how fortunate we are to not have McCain as a president....hopeully Obama can come in and provide real foreign policy.

Next time you are going to take on a task that requires a bit of thought..try to get all your facts.

Another "snow-job" being served up - to hide the truth from the American people (and try to boost the ratings for some local TV station).

If dear "Joe" (& PJTV) was after the truth, Joe wouldn't need the guidance of Israel's "Official Government" PRESS OFFICE and photographer to look for it - nor pass judgement sitting in Sderot, Israel. He would keep his mouth shut till he had the opportunity to evaluate the damage done by Israel from having been to inside GAZA.

4 Israelie's killed by "rockets" (9 by OTHER means) while 870 Palestinian CIVILIANS were killed in Gaza.

Hamas was ELECTED BY THE PEOPLE of that region (fair and square). We dubbed them "terrorists" (so be it) but they ARE the government there (Abbas is propped up by "the West"). If it wasn't for Hamas fighting back, the whole region now would be Israel. And as Israel practices RACISM in reverse, were do you want the Palestinians to go - Israel booted them out of the country they NOW OCCUPY ILLEGALLY - by UN charter.

Joe - GO HOME

The facts of his position discredit his arguments. Fact is, not only is his name not Joe but he was never a licensed plumber & Obama's Tax Plan can never affect him because not only does it not affect small businesses, but Joey is nowhere near ever having his own business. He does NOT represent "normal" American people. Most of you who claim to be everday average citizens are not too bright and are usually uninformed. You only tune in to the media that will further validate your already biased position, refuse all conflicting data & say stupid sh*t like "You guys report where our troops are at, what's happening day-to-day, you make a big deal out of it. I think it's asinine". Well Joe, or Sam, or whatever your hillbilly mother named you, you're an a$$. And although we all have a right to opinions, most of us shouldn't.

It seems like Hamas is determined to cause more grief for their citizens as they continue to lob more rockets at Israel. Unfortunately the media, in many cases is pro-Hamas, since they critcize Israel exclusively. Why doesn't Egypt open its borders to any civilians who wish to escape the suicide methods of Hamas? After all, Egypt is a Muslim country? Is it because they want Israel to crush Hamas and are afraid opening their borders will allow those thugs and killers to hide in their country? Something to think about.
