Israel continued its assault on a variety of targets in Gaza Monday as European foreign ministers and French President Nicolas Sarkozy worked to secure a ceasefire.

But with Palestinian rocket fire still being launched, Israel said it won't stop its punishing offensive until "peace and tranquility" are achieved in southern Israeli towns.

Israel, which is attacking Gaza by air, sea and with troops on the ground, seized control of high-rise buildings Monday and destroyed houses, mosques and smuggling tunnels.

According to Palestinian health official Dr. Moaiya Hassanain, about 20 Palestinian children were killed Monday, the 10th day of the Israeli offensive.

Since Israel launched its air offensive on Dec. 27, Gaza health officials report 550 people have been killed, of which 200 were civilians. About 2,500 have been wounded.

Five Israeli civilians and one soldier have also been killed by militants.

CTV's Middle East Bureau Chief Janis Mackey Frayer said Israel has managed to bisect the Gaza Strip, severing the main north-south corridor.

"The rationale to this is that it may impede the ability of Hamas and other militants to move around -- to be able to have rocket squads on the move," Mackey Frayer reported Monday from the region.

Inside Gaza, Palestinian-Canadian Nizar Kaddah said Monday he's living in fear and cannot leave his home.

"Even if I want to go and get some food or some bread, I cannot get out of my house," Kaddah told CTV's Canada AM on Monday.

"I'm afraid that if I drive my car a rocket or something will hit my car."

Kaddah, who is in Gaza with his wife and two children, said he's tried to call the Canadian embassy in Ramallah but has been unable to get through.

Hamas leader Mahmoud Zahar called Monday for Palestinians to fight back against Israeli troops and to keep targeting Israeli civilians.

"The Zionists have legitimized the killing of their children by killing our children. They have legitimized the killing of their people all over the world by killing our people," Zahar, in a rare appearance, said in a video broadcast on Hamas TV.

Meanwhile, Abu Obeida, a spokesman for Hamas' military wing, warned Israeli forces that militants "wait for you in every street and every alleyway."

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said Monday the attacks would not stop until Israelis in the south, who have been targeted by constant Palestinian rocket fire, can live in "peace and tranquility."

Diplomatic efforts

The U.S. State Department said Washington was pressing for a cease-fire that would include a halt to rocket attacks -- and an arrangement for reopening crossing points on the border with Israel. State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said another element would address the tunnels into Gaza from Egypt, through which Hamas has smuggled materials and arms.

But the deputy head of Hamas' politburo in Syria rejected the U.S. proposal. Moussa Abu Marzouk, told the Associated Press the U.S. plan would impose "a de facto situation" and encourages Israel to keep attacking Gaza.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy visited the region Monday in an attempt to broker a truce and encourage the resumption of peace talks. Europe "wants a cease-fire as quickly as possible," Sarkozy said after meeting Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. He urged Israel to halt the offensive, while blaming Hamas for acting "irresponsibly and unpardonably."

Meanwhile, a European Union delegation met with Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni.

"The EU insists on a cease-fire at the earliest possible moment," said Karel Schwarzenberg, the foreign minister of the Czech Republic, which took over the EU's presidency last week from France. Schwarzenberg added that rocket attacks on Israel also must stop.

Earlier Monday, Livni met with her counterparts from France, Sweden and the Czech Republic but still rejected calls for an immediate halt of the offensive.

Livni told reporters Monday that Israel's incursion was a form of "legitimate self-defence," according to Israeli daily Haaretz.

"Israel wants very much for any sort of lull in this campaign to be drafted on its terms," Mackey Frayer said.

She said although Israel is demanding a complete end to Palestinian rocket fire it would be "naive" to think that every single rocket is going to stop.

"What is likely to happen is that Israel would want to see at least a diminished capability on the part of Hamas and its ability to fire rockets," Mackey Frayer said.

"But we are witnessing what is the heaviest military offensive by Israel into the Gaza Strip in the last number of decades and Hamas is still firing rockets -- some with longer range -- into Israeli towns."

Rex Brynen, a professor of political science at McGill University, said Monday the problem for Israel will be finding an exit strategy if Hamas doesn't agree to give up.

"I think the current dynamic is a very dangerous and difficult one," Brynen told CTV Newsnet from Montreal.

"I certainly don't imagine that we're going to have any breakthroughs any time soon in the peace process but there have also been conflicts far, far bloodier than the Arab-Israeli conflict that have ended in peace."

Hamas is a democratically elected government. The people voted for them even though their slogan is 'death to Israel'. The citizens of Gaza who elected to be at war are now suffering the consequences of electing a terrorist government. Message to Gazans: "Shame on you for voting for violence. Would you please think of your children when voting!!!"

I'm not an Israeli but I do agree there is only so much one can take (i.e. constant barrage by Hamas)and a counter-strike is necessary! I'm tired of militant groups who operate in and out of civilian locations and WITH the support of so-called innocents, and cry foul when targeted!

You cannot subjugate or intimidate a population. You can wipe them all out as a “final solution” if that is the means that you are prepared to use to achieve your ends. But you may occupy their lands and kill and imprison their current leaders but another leadership will grow from within. That is the way that it has been, that is the way it is and that is the way it is going to be. That is a lesson we should have learned from history.

Mutual genocide is not the solution.

Imagine were the only prospect for the Jews it for the rockets to slow down! No country on earth would stand for it's citizens being terrorized with rockets yet the world can only focus on "disproportionate" resonse. The reality is that Gaza and Lebanon will never stop because they want to eliminate the jews and severeal other countries would like to help. The arabs and jews have been fighting off and on for thousands of year. This is very sad but I could not live under the terrany of rocket fire day in and day out.

I find it hard to feel sorry for the Palestinians. They have to simply "Quit Firing Rockets Into Israel". If the Hamas Government does not put an end to it Israel has the right to protect it's own citizens and appears that it will, no matter what the cost. If the Hamas government cannot control it's own people and stop this what do they expect?
Seems pretty simple to me.

The world seems to be angry at Israel for defending their soverignty and for defending the safety of their citizens.

I think people tend to forget, that it is Hamas who has been launching rockets indescrimately into Israeli territory. It's funny how the media doesn't show the destruction or death of innocent men women and children in Israel who are being killed by these Hamas missile attacks.

Israel hs the right as a nation under the UN, to defend it's borders and it's citizens.

The people of Gaza elected Hamas to be their government, with a policy as their slogan "Death to Israel".

So, now Hamas who wanted war with Israel has it, the whole world wonders why?

I support Israel 100% for standing up and fighting Hamas, even if it means going into Gaza and eliminating every single terrorist that is there

As a citizen of a Middle Eastern country, I support Israeli's attack to Gaza. Of course, we need to condemn civilians’ death, but on the other hand, Israel had no other choice but to destroy Hamas. It’s fact that Hamas is nothing but a terrorist organisation. They've betrayed the trust of their own people and imposed this unwanted war to the people of Gaza. Let us not forget that even Mahmmod Abbas, the elected president of Palestine, condemns Hamas's activities in provoking the war with Israel

Canada itself does not recognize Jersalem as belonging to Israel. You can't even enter that in your passport. So, why is our leadership pointing fingers at a group of freedom fighters when there is no hope for a solution? Why doesn't our leadership stop with the blame game and step in a declare that leadership on both sides expedite a solution and settlement? There was a time that solution was very close before the PM of Israel was assasinated by Israeli extremists. And let us not forget that Israeli extremists at one time were also bombing hotels, buses & assasinating British diplomats in the quest for their own Statehood. Now that they got what they demanded, under that legitamacy of a gov't, they feel they are somehow authorities on who is a terrorist or not? I don't think so.

I'm satisfied with our refusal to deem Jerusalem as belonging to Israel but it's time to put creative and progressive minded leaders to work. Perhaps recognize Jerusalam as a country onto itself - something like Vatican City.

Hammas has to understand that they have to answer for their actions, and unfortunatly there are people who get killed/or injured, and that is very sad. The thing that is very disturbing in all this, is Hammas will hide themselves in and around citzens, who have not started this action.

What's the Solution??
said

Obviously, we all have our opinions about who is right and who is wrong in the middle east.

This is not a problem that can be solved by diplomatic means. On the one hand you have the Israelis, who were given their current homeland after the atrocities of the Second World War. On the other hand you have Palestinians who feel they were pushed from that same land, and feel it is rightfully theirs.

A simple glance at history will show that this land has been fought over for centuries. It has changed hands over and over and over, and many bloody wars have been fought on the very land on which is fought today.

This land is the centre of many faiths, and we all know what people's individual faiths do to their ability to think rationally.

We may be able to achieve a cease fire, but certainly not a lasting peace. This issue is far to deeply rooted in faith for simple diplomacy to solve.

I understand why Palestinians feel the way they do about the land, but I will never understand why religious zealots would put their own people in peril by continuing rocket attacks against a militarily superior foe.

On the other hand, I can only sympathize with Israel, surrounded on all sides by groups of religious idealists whose sworn mission it is to destroy Israelis. They have no choice but to defend themselves from foreign attacks.

Fact is, Israel is stronger than its enemies, and their allies are stronger. And in the end, continued attacks on Israel will only end the same way: more and more dead Palestinians, and more and more hatred between these two groups.

So what's the solution?

.....

.....

Faith does funny things to otherwise good people, doesn't it?

Firstly, the land Israel occupies (pre 7 day war) was given to them from the British Empire because it belonged to them. About Israel occupying parts of Lebanon and Syria, they attacked Israel at the same time and it ended with them both losing land during the war, which because no treaties were signed at the end restoring that land it is legally Israel's.
When you are a rat and you keep nipping at a sleeping tiger sooner or later they will wake up. Hamas has woken up that tiger, one of the strongest and well trained militaries in the world. If you don't like being invaded or having your borders closed, then stop firing rockets.

Israel’s resort to military means to silence the rockets of Hamas should have been no surprise.

Since Israel evacuated its soldiers and settlers from the Gaza Strip three years ago, Palestinian groups in Gaza have fired thousands of rudimentary rockets and mortar bombs across the border, killing people and disrupting normal life in a swathe of southern Israel. They fired almost 300 between December 19th, when Hamas ignored Egypt’s entreaties and decided not to renew a six-month truce.

Israel is absolutely right to say it was provoked and to start its bombing campaign.

Even Barack Obama stated the followinig: “If somebody was sending rockets into my house where my two daughters sleep at night, I’m going to do everything in my power to stop that. And I would expect Israelis to do the same thing.”

I wish "defending yourself" and "fighting terrorists" was not allowed to include the widespread killing of children and other non-combatants.

It is not right that certain governments and armies are not held accountable for any attrocities just because their enemies are terrorists.

Who your enemy is should not be used as an excuse to target randomly and take no care to avoid civilian casualties.

Democratic nations such as Israel should be able to do better than such wholesale civilian carnage when targeting their enemies.

Isn't that supposed to be a fundamental difference between the legitimate army of a democratic nation and the terrorists they are fighting?

Before Israel there was Palestine. Because of anti-Semitic tensions in Europe a non religious Zionist movement started in Europe to help the Jews. Other countries such as Venezuela were listed as potential places for Jews to live.

Many Jews did not want to leave Europe nor have a Jewish state because being Jewish is a religion not a nationality. But because of Hitler and the atrocities of the holocaust many had no choice but to leave Europe. Before the war of 1948 the Jews (mostly from Europe) were fighting to get equal representation in parliament and now they want to eliminate the Palestinian people.

This mess is because England promised the land to both the Palestinians who live there (under a British mandate) and the Jew who wanted to flee Europe if they fight the Germans.

The people in the west bank and Gaza live under siege, discrimination and humiliation by the Israelis Even before Hamas ever existed.
How would you feel if your food, work, medical supplies and energy are controlled by an occupation force? They have prisoners who have not been charged with any crimes other than being Arabs.

The UN has passed many resolutions against Israel but none have been respected.
Live like a Palestinian for one day to understand how they feel. No hope only killing and humiliation. What does the future hold for a young man who cannot get a job leave the country or gather his crop because Israel has ceased the land to build a huge wall to block off the Palestinian from their land that were given to the settlers whom have recently immigrated to Israel and are living on occupied land from 1967 and 1973?

To "Peace For All":

Like the Palestinians millions of eastern Europeans (like my family) had land and wealth stolen from them by various governments after WW II.

Unlike the Palestinians, these eastern Europeans were political realists who knew that nothing they could do would ever bring this land back. Unfair things happen.

However, the eastern Europeans have not poisoned successive generations with undying hatred for those who robbed them; instead, they built positive new lives for themselves and their children in Europe or in places like Canada and the U.S. They have accepted the facts on the ground and moved on. No one raised me to wage eternal war against Poland and Russia.

The Palestinians lack this political realism; they still dream of undoing the past and consequently sacrifice generation after generation for a hopeless pipe-dream.

When the Israelis were still in Gaza, they were exporting fruits and vegetables to Europe from farms and greenhouses. After Hamas took over, instead of building on this economic activity, they tore down the greenhouses and up-rooted the farms - thus depriving their own people of jobs and a food source, i.e. Hamas impoverished its own people rather than building something positive.

Clearly Hamas is not interested in the peaceful development of Gaza.

Why did Hamas fire rockets after the truce has ended? Because they are a desperate oppressed peoples living in absolute desolate conditions forced upon them by the israeli's.

The fact that the state of Israel has ruled Palestine with an Iron fist for the past half century has lead to this never ending violence. The fact that Israel killed over 100 women and children in this invasion shows that they are NO better than the "terrorists" they seek to eliminate.

Violence should not be justified on either side and it is time for us a society to denounce ALL violence not matter which side of the spectrum!

Add 140 sq miles of desert to the West Bank in compensation. Send billions in aid. Restore law & order with U.N. peacekeepers. Start a massive infrastructure program to create jobs. Sell the Mediterranean beachfront to developers and use the cash to build decent housing. And then move U.N. headquarters to Gaza from New York City. What's your solution?

If there 'another' ceasefire, Hamas will be launching rockets as soon as they can.

When Pres. Abbas was formally elected after replacing the late Arafat, Hamas thought that he would take up the cause of 'wiping Israel off the map' but he didn't do that.
Abbas instead tried the diplomatic way of trying to live side by side in their own state.
Hamas didn't like that and so created so many problems for Abbas that he in turn called a snap election.
Palestinians voted in Hamas in a higher vote count than anyone expected.
Hamas fought Fatah in Gaza and won. Fatah is still the governing party in the West Bank. Now the West Bank and Gaza are seperated by Israel.
Those are all facts. No one can dispute them.
However, having said that, why did the Palestinians vote for a known terrorist group who hide themselves amongst its 'people', why do they hide their ammunitions, etc in their 'people's homes why does the leader of Hamas live in protection in Syria instead of amongst his 'people' and why does Hamas put their 'people' in harms way by continuously sending rockets/missiles into Israel?
I would think that if Hamas was so smart, that they could make Gaza the envy of the world and show the world that they could be respected which would lead to negotiation of sorts so that all could live side-by-side. Unfortunately, as any terrorists, they have their own agenda, regardless of who gets killed, not to mention the other factious groups like The Martyr's Brigade (to name one) who will do their own thing and not listen to Hamas if they don't like what they hear.
So this will continue for thousands of years, unless Nostradamus's prophecy is to be believed that the 3rd world war will begin in the Middle East.
Now that's food for thought for the rest of the world.

The pre requisite for peace & stability in the middle east is a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Israel has to come to the understanding that they can't wipe off the whole entire Palestinian population because they are not going any where, they will always fight for their land.

Israel may have the right to defend itself, but the Palestinians have every right to fight & resist their occupiers (Israel)

Hamas's fight is for the liberation of Palestine & let us not forget that it was Israel who seiged Gaza for more than 2 yrs preventing food & medical supplies from going in & for which Hamas had no choice but to retaliate & fire rockets.

Hamas is a resistance movement not a terror organization

Lets make this clear. for both sides. Occupying and blockading once land if that is really the case is wrong and therefore should be worked out diplomaticaly and NOT with force. Supporting a government that is bent on destroying a nation and all its citizens is just crazy and should not be tolerated in this modern world that we live in. Firing rockets missiles and mortars into someone else's country is an act of war in my book. What do you think that country in this case israel to do wait another thousand of years to see what happens and watch it people be terrorized or act in self defence by blindly firing the same rockets back as Hamas does killing civilians? No I believe they have every right to move in and destroy that countries capability to further terrorize inicent human beings by going after specific targets associated with HAMAS and the ammunition depots which contain the terrorists weapons. As Canadians what would we do if someone started firing 30 or 40 or 50 rockets into our Cities? I'm sure we would be retaliating by neturalizing the threat, protecting our citizens and not just sit back like nothing happened. Would you like to run down into your basement 5 times a day because of incoming missiles? It's amazing that the media uses the term Civilians or innocent to describe any residents of the Gaza strip or Golan Heights. Or Israel for that matter. There isn't a civilian there. It is an active warzone the majority of the time and the residents are far from neutral. Also, the Israeli population is all war-ready. To think of them as the civilians in the way that we use the word in Canada is naive. If Canada is invaded by a ground force, what is your immediate duty? An Israeli "civilian" knows his answer and where his gun is. Canadians would be confused and disoriented and start arguing about who's "right".

To anyone who thinks the land was 'stolen':You have not recognizing history. This land belonged to the Jewish people over the centuries through occupations by others i.e.Turks,Romans,etc...'47 Saw the legal creation of the modern state of Israel. This was executed legally through the United Nations. The new state was defined by taking back land ilegally occupied by neighboring Arab nations. This is the true history. Why then was Israel attacked by five armies on the day of it's birth?Because of what it stands for.A sovereign home for the Jewish people.Either you believe in the intent of the UN or you don't.Either the state is legal or it is not.Since it IS according to the reigning world authority, then it has the right to defend itself.Israel offers full citizenship for Arabs that wanted with all the benefits one could ask for.For those not interested they had thier own areas to go develope within the country but they chose not to.Corruption and wasted energies have not helped to develop infrastructure. They would rather hate and fight to have something 'given' to them by a nation and people they have vowed to kill FROM THE DAY THEY CAME TO BE.For the person who speaks of the instructions to Arabs to leave thier homes and ended up in refugee camps; It was the Egyptians and thier 'allies' who attacked Israel in '47 giving those instructions. They were told not to accept the citizenship because the Jewish people would be pushed into the sea. That failed and so these people have found themselves lying in a bed which they made!Israel has recognized their own right to self government and lands. The fact is that after legal elections in the West Bank and Gaza, Fatah was unable to control thier own.Rockets rained on Israel intentially aimed at daycares, schools, hospitals. The have what they make for themselves.

No sympathy

The Palestinians started a succession of wars with Israel, all of which they lost. The UN set up refugee camps, which use UN money to make more munitions to continue the war. If the Palestinians would use this money to create a new society and a working economy, they could have a prosperous nation instead of what they have. But instead, they spend every penny on bullets, or any other weapon they can get their hands on in order to blow up women, children and random strangers. This makes them losers. They lost the war, they lose every skirmish, they can't even hit hard targets effectively, meaning they are going to continue to lose. I mean, if someone blows up your house and flattens your neighbourhood, and your response is to kill his dog, how exactly do you expect to win? It's like blowing bubbles at a herd of stampeding elephants, bragging about how the soap got in their eyes and "really stung them this time". Face it, you lost.

If the Palestinians would learn to value their women and children more than they hate the Israelis, they might actually have a chance to improve their lives. I have no pity for those who beat their heads against rock walls, complaining that it hurts.

It's indeed regretful to see how poorly Canadians are informed about the situation in Middle East.
It's not true that Israelis did not recongnise an independent Arab state in Palestine. In 1949, United Nation passed a resolution to establish two independent countries in Palestine; one Jewish and the other one a Muslim Arab state. The Israelis accepted the proposal, but the Arabs rejected it, unanimously. They wanted to "throw all the Jews to the Ocean". Israel never forced the Palestinians to leave their lands. Right now, there are about 1.5 million Muslim Palestinians in Israel and they have the same rights the Jewish citizens have. However, no Arab country is willing to accept Palestinians as immigrants, and if they do, they will not accept them as equal citizens. The fact is Hamas is nothing but a puppet of the Islamic regime in Iran. It's difficult for Palestinians to have peace and prosperity with Hamas in power.

Hamas may have been elected, but they are a terrorist organization and lost any right to govern when they took control of Gaza by force. Palestinians have broken every single cease-fire in the history of the conflict, mostly by their inability to control militants within their borders. Could you imagine if some people in some small town in Canada were sending rockets to the US, and Canada just said "Sorry, we can't control them"

It seems to me that many comments here are misinformed. Please allow me to point to some facts that CAN NOT be disputed:

1- Israel is an occupying force that is oppressing 4.5 million Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza. Gaza has 1.5 million living there because these people were ethnically cleansed from many parts in Israel. Check the work of the Israeli Jewish historian Ilan Pappe for more Info.

2- The government of Hamas is democratically elected. Actually, the Palestinians held the ONLY free elections in the whole middle east despite the Israeli occupation. The West immediately punished them by cutting all aid!.

3- Israel is the one who broke the cease fire which lasted for 6 months on Nov. 4th. Hamas retaliated by firing rockets. It is NOT true that Israel was acting in self defence. The attack on Gaza has been planned for a long time regardless of the rockets or the cease fire.

4- A war crime can not be the response to another crime. Right now, Palestinian women and children are dying inside their homes either of starvation of because of Israeli bombing. Places of worship, universities, schools, and hospitals were bombed. These are war crimes on a massive scale.

Finally, I would like to say that I am ashamed of Canada's position. We call ourselves a free country. However, when it comes to our middle eastern policies we are only free to agree with what Israel agrees on and disgaree with what Israel does not like!.

Since the early 1900's, Jews from around the world emigrated to what is now Israel. They were able to purchase land from the English and create cities such as Tel Aviv while the palestinians were not allowed to purchase lands.

Gaza and the West bank were never annexed, therefore, are not considered as being part of Israel. Israel has however dictated that it was confiscating all lands through which the Arab countries who attacked during the 6-day war, entered into Israeli territory.

All peace processes to date have included an armament clause. None of which state that the Palestinian State has the right to defend itself. In fact, all of them expressdly dictated that Palestinians (Military and Police forces included) could not carry weapons that had more than 6 bullets and could only carry handguns. Meanwhile, any Israeli living in those territories is allowed to own any weapon he or she wished to own and use - Uzis are common in jewish homes. (If they want an F16, they can if they can pay for it)

So imagine a political system that outlines that says you have no right to defend yourself. What do you do when that same system shuts all trade, water supplies, electricity, removes top soil from your farms, and then tells you to stop whinning ? During peacetime to boot ! You fight back. With what ? The days of Rocks versus Tanks and Gunships are over. Your only recourse are terorrist groups. They use what they can smuggle in.

The latest tirade is because Israel renegged, AGAIN, on a trade deal that was the basis behind the last Cease-fire.

Israel does not want a Palestinian state. Period.

When any nation - any nation - chooses to rationalize the killing of innocent men, women and children to attain an end - any end - then they place themselves into the “the end justifies the means” nation’s pool of shame. The rationale could be “collateral damage” or “retribution” or “justifiable retaliation” or “defensive invasion or strike” it is still the inexcusable killing of innocents.

The “the end justifies the means” rationale dots the history of man through history and we have called it “the final solution” and “ethnic cleansing” and “genocide” and have condemned it as barbaric – yet it continues.

One would hope that we have learned something from history!

The Hamas terrorists need to be dealt with an iron fist. So they are no longer able to fire rockets into Israel. They have had many warnings but they dont learn. If Hamas actually cared about the Palestinians they would never put them in a situation like this. Israel has a right to defend itself. Hamas should have known it was coming, instead of fueling the fire more, they should lay down their arms if they actually care for the people living there.

Here is the BIG LIE: Hamas violated the cease-fire. The Israeli bombardment is a response to Palestinian rocket fire and is designed to end such rocket attacks.

The Truth:

Israel never observed the cease-fire to begin with. From the beginning, it announced a “special security zone” within the Gaza Strip and announced that Palestinians who enter this zone will be fired upon. In other words, Israel announced its intention that Israeli soldiers would shoot at farmers and other individuals attempting to reach their own land in direct violation of not only the cease-fire but international law.

Despite shooting incidents, including ones resulting in Palestinians getting injured, Hamas still held to the cease-fire from the time it went into effect on June 19 until Israel effectively ended the truce on November 4 by launching an airstrike into Gaza that killed five and injured several others.

Israel’s violation of the cease-fire predictably resulted in retaliation from militants in Gaza who fired rockets into Israel in response. The increased barrage of rocket fire at the end of December is being used as justification for the continued Israeli bombardment, but is a direct response by militants to the Israeli attacks.

Israel's actions, including its violation of the cease-fire, predictably resulted in an escalation of rocket attacks against its own population.

The only peace process that could work is the one that will treat Palestinians as human beings.

The arab countries that lost their lands have agreed to let Israel have them BUT...

1. only if a Palestinian state exists.

2. only if Palestian state has the right to defend itself as it sees fit. (They have also stated that there would be no intention of Nuclear armament)

3. only if the Palestinian people are treated fairly and that the Human Rights Charter apply to them.

There are plenty of tunels that go from Mexico to the US. The US doesn't launch missiles and bombs from F16s into Mexico to stop it.

People forget that Israel sentenced quite a few of its own citizens to death for... Terrorism. And still do.

People also forget the massacres committed by Israeli terrorists between 1905 and 1960 against Palestinian refugee camps. Some have been labeled as Genocides by the Internatioanl community.

As for the land given to Israel by the UN! The UN gave them nothing. The British sold them 70 % of the land prior to WWII. What was recognized by the UN (not given by the UN) was what the Israelis held as of 1948 - most of which is less than what it has today.

The 6-day war provided 30 % of Israel's land mass which 60 % of that is now considered Palestinian lands.

The biggest issue now with those countries is water. Water was taken by Israel, without consent from those Arab counties, from the Dead Sea. It reduced the level of the Dead Sea by some 100 meters, some say as much as 400 meters. It also reduced the flow of the Jordan to 2 weeks instead of 2 months bankrupting many farmers in those countries.

There is no doubt the Israeli/Arab conflict is complicated to say the least. In 1948 the WWII western allies decided to grant some Palestinian land to Israel which was stripped from Israel about 2000 ago. A major factor affecting this decision was sympathy toward Jews generated from Hitler’s Holocaust. Israel expanded this original allotment after being attached by a coalition of Arab countries whose goal was to wipe them out.

The Arab nations surrounding current Israel do not recognize the 1948 decision and will not rest until it is undone one way or another. The real issue we need to work out is justifying (to some larger degree) this decision to the Arab people or at least getting them to accept some negotiated settlement. This off course is proving to be impossible.

Bible prophesy clearly describes all this and is interesting to study. What will happen in the future you ask? God only knows!

Being the ones who started this latest round of hostitilities, Gaze should be the ones offering the olive branch and accepting whatever conditions Israel agrees to. Gaza is past playing the victims in this one.

The rest of the world should stay out of this conflict and let the two resolve it themselves.

Let me summarize what happened in the last 7 decades with an analogy.

Ees-rah-ehl was a homeless person who was oppressed and tortured by Mazis and similar bullies. He went to the house of Pha-less-toon for a sleepover as a guest, but he unlawfully took control of Pha-less-toon's entire house, and killed his children with machine guns in broad daylight, declared himself the true owner of the house and imprisoned Pha-less-toon in a wardrobe in the basement.

He shackled Pha-less-toon's hands and legs, blindfolded him, and repeatedly bludgeoned him on a regular basis. He never allowed any other neighbor to help Pha-less-toon, even for a single drop of water. Nobody could dare to say anything against Ees-rah-ehl, because he was explicitly backed by the sheriff of the town who was the bully of the World (take a wild guess who could this be?!, Answer: You-Ass-A). I think you are wise enough to surmise how was right and wrong. Peace out!

News Flash....

Every country in the world has the right to defend themselves.

So my question is this:

If a Palestinian country is in the cards, should it not have the right to defend itself ? Should it not have the right to arm as it sees fit ?

All this just shows us that British colonialism did not work. Just as all forms of colonialism doesn't work.

As for the argument that the Israelis were given lands that were taken away from them 2000 years ago, how about the Palestinians be given their lands back as their lands were taken by the Isrealites some 3500 years ago ? The argument doesn't hold up when it comes to war.

So. Remember this.

I am very sad for the innocents in the Gaza Strip. I am not sad for those that voted for Hamas, as they are the sole cause for this conflict. Hamas is a rabid dog organization and the only way to deal with a rabid dog is to "deal with it", once and for all! The reason Israel has to "control" the borders with these animals is their penchant for murder of innocents. Gaza, when occupied by Israelis provided 14% of produce exports and 5000 jobs for Palestinians. Hamas takes over and it slides back into its backwards way... There is no hope for Palestinians until they choose leaders without rabies!

Shelagh Delves-Broughton

Someone here asked why Hamas places themselves in between civilians? Simply put, they know that the chances of Israel targeting innocent civilians will for the most part keep them safer, now, that said........

Hamas explains using civilians as human shields:
"We desire death as you desire life." [Feb. 29, 2008]

The UN announcement that 51 civilians have died in the conflict in Gaza must be understood in the context of Hamas's declared ideology to use civilians as human shields for Hamas fighters.

Indeed, Hamas continues to emphasize and promote the religious ideology that death for Allah is an ideal to be actively pursued. The goal is to convince Palestinians, including women and children, not to fear death but even to face it at the front to protect Hamas fighters.

Hamas's placement of its military installations and fighters among civilians reflects this ideology, and has led to these 51 deaths.

A Hamas representative in the PA legislative council this year expressed pride in the fact that women and children are used as human shields in fighting Israel. He described it as part of a "death industry" at which Palestinians excel, and explained that the Palestinians "desire death" with the same intensity that Israelis "desire life."

The following is the full text of the comments by Hamas representative Fathi Hamad:

"For the Palestinian people death became an industry, at which women excel and so do all people on this land: the elderly excel, the Jihad fighters excel, and the children excel. Accordingly [Palestinians] created a human shield of women, children, the elderly and the Jihad fighters against the Zionist bombing machine, as if they were saying to the Zionist enemy: We desire death as you desire life."

The people voted for Hamas, not so much because they wanted them in power, but more so because Arafat had already stolen billions of aid and siphoned it to his wife in France, so realizing how corrupt Fatah was, they tried Hamas hoping that it might get better for them.

From Jan. through Nov. of 2008, Hamas, who is funded largely by Iran, launched 1212 rockets and 1290 mortar bombs from Gaza into southern Israel. For many weeks, Israel had been imploring Hamas to stop shooting, to allow farmers to attend their fields. Hamas refused. Israel responded after a long 11 months with an offensive into Gaza. At least they telephoned prior to this, informing Hamas to move any civilians away from the targeted military areas to avoid casualties. It is not their desire to see innocent people and children suffer. Israel's offensive remains a military one, as opposed to Hamas. I have little respect for Hamas' bombing of Israeli day cares, schools, supermarkets with the INTENT to kill Israeli civilians. Their agenda remains to wipe Israel off the face of the map. I support Israel in her efforts to have an international team to help enforce the ceasefire. It seems the rest of the world is more concerned with the fate of Palestinian children that Hamas is.

I don't understand how so many people around the world, after the London bombings and September 11th, are so opposed to the Israelis invading a terrorist haven. After all, it wasn't Israel who started all this; it was the Hamas. The Israelis gave relative freedom and peace to the Gaza Strip, and to thank them, the Hamas launches rockets into Israel with the intent of killing anyone, particularly civilians. Whereas the Israelis were targetting terrorists only, and even went to the trouble of warning Gaza's civilians. So who really is the good guy here?

I would love to know where was the UN everyday that rockets were falling on Israel? Where was France when everyday rockets were falling on Israeli citizens? Where was the out cry to STOP the rocket attacks on Israel? Why doesn't the same rule apply to the Palestinians? And if the Israelis are SOOO horrible why did it take them a year to act? Do you think any other country would have waited a year to act as hundreds of rockets were fired into it's country designed to kill innocent civillians.

I guess it comes down to one thing. In this world it's okay if Jewish families and kids are killed by a terrorist group, but it's not okay for Israel to defend it's people from terrorists. And the 500+ dead Palestians how many are hamas fighters? why is it the news media around the world lumps the hamas and civilians all together? It does make for a better story, I guess to the media these are just misunderstood men. Why haven't we heard more on the fact that hamas shot 35 men belonging to other Palestinian groups? why would they announce this unless they were afraid the Israelis would find the bodies. And don't forget the other shootings of 75 other Palest. members just so they wouldn't help over throw Hamas, lets just shoot them in the legs and break their hands. Hardly any mention of this in the news WHY? OH and one more thing, if there is such a humanitarian crisis in Gaza then why did the World Food Program today tell the Israelis to stop bringing in food because their ware houses are full? It's real clear to me who the media and France wants to win.

Nick in Gatineau, you said "how about the Palestinians be given their lands back as their lands were taken by the Isrealites some 3500 years ago ? "

The Arabs identifying as Palestinians have no historical links to the Canaanites and other tribes that lived in that region in biblical times. It's like saying that the modern Egyptians are the same people who built the pyramids. They are not. Palestinians are Arabs who have settled there in much more recent history.

I do support a two-state solution, but let's not distort the historical facts here. I am not religious at all, but I do think Jerusalem belong to Israel, from a historical perspective. It was founded by the Jews to house their kings, way before the birth of Islam or the arrival of Arabs to the region.

Norwegian medics told Press TV correspondent Akram al-Sattari that some of the victims who have been wounded since Israel began its attacks on the Gaza Strip on December 27 have traces of depleted uranium in their bodies.

The report comes after Israeli tanks and troops swept across the border into Gaza on Saturday night, opening a ground operation after eight days of intensive attacks by Israeli air and naval forces on the impoverished region.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak warned on Sunday that the wide-ranging ground offensive in the Gaza Strip would be "full of surprises."

A ground offensive in the densely-populated Gaza is expected to drastically increase the death toll of the civilian population.

The latest assaults bring the number of Palestinians killed to over 488 with 2790 others wounded. The UN says that about 25 percent of the casualties were civilian deaths - including at least 34 children.

A spokesman of the Al-Quds Brigades, the military wing of the Islamic Jihad movement, told Al Jazeera that Israeli tanks were trying to move into Gaza City.

He said that the group's fighters had destroyed an Israeli armoured personnel carrier in the clashes.

Al Jazeera's Ayman Mohyeldin, reporting from the Gaza Strip, said that much of the fighting took place around a high area on the outskirts of the city.

"The strategic overlook essentially gives an overview of the entire northern part of Gaza .. that's why it probably has some significance to the Israeli military," he said.

"Because of its height and elevation it has probably also been used to fire rockets into Israel."

Fierce fighting between Israeli troops and Palestinian fighters was also reported in eastern Jabliya in the northern Gaza Strip.

That fact is conveniently ignored in the Palestinian argument. We can argue history until we're blue in the face it doesn't change the fact that Israel supports a Palestinian state while Palestinian authorities have consistently shown they don't support an Israeli state. If they were concerned about the awful destruction of war and the eventual death of civilians, the UN and peaceniks would've tried to pressure Hamas to halt their rocket attacks and pressure Israel to seeks a peaceful resolution (isn't that the UN job?). Their silence back then were deafening, and now that Palestinian women and children are dying isn't it too late to protest now? Or are they really concerned about their death other than using them to make Israel looks like the agressor?

Soon it will be all over & Hamas will still be there, because Hamas is the Palestinian people's hope for freedom..

For those of you who think or say "Shame on those who voted Hamas" well, do you know why they voted Hamas to start with or your just going with the flow, the difference between Hamas & Fatah that Hamas wanted a palestinian state prior to recognizing Israel while Fatah recognized Israel before reaching a deal on a state, which took them ofcourse no where, because Israel is not welling to concede the land it concurred 41 years ago !! whats taken by force will be taken back by force

Funny no one considered the Haganah a terror organization..

Blood or liberty.. I prefer to be dead than to be under Israeli occupation.
btw the palestinian are the descend of the Cannaites thru Easu's wife.. Easu is the son of Issac of Prophet Abraham. Easu married a Cannaites & lived in palestine, he is considered the father of the arabs & since the only arabs who lived there were the palestinians that makes them the Cannaites in descend...

The land is ours & we dont mind sharing it, but we will not give it up & we are not going any where until we all die & take back our share :)

"..who is arming Israel?? Who is providing the weaponry being used on a defenceless population???"

1.)Israel is arming Israel.
2.)Perhaps if Hamas improved infrastructure and living conditions instead of spending millions on homemade rockets...

I 100% back Israel on what is happening now. Hamas is spreading terror by the constant rocket attacks, and for those people who think Israel is the agressor, this comment is from their Defence Website the IDF,
"Monday (Jan. 5), the IAF continues to assist Ground Forces in Operation Cast Lead. 80 trucks loaded with humanitarian aid is transferred into Gaza Strip. Over 30 rockets are launched at Israel"

Did anyone asked themselves why there were rockets to start with ????
It is because Gaza has been under military siege for the past 2 years !!! What did you wanted to do throw candy after being left with no supplies for that long.. Its clear Israel provoked the war against Hamas, but what they dont know that there will always be Hamas
