U.S. president-elect Barack Obama has nominated former first lady Sen. Hillary Clinton as America's top diplomat on the world stage.
Obama said his former rival for the Democratic Party's leadership has been his friend and a source of counsel over the years. He also said Clinton has the abilities to help him tackle some of the world's most pressing issues.
"I am proud that she will be our next secretary of state. She clearly has the ability to advance our interests around the world," he said at a press conference in Chicago, where he also unveiled other members of his foreign policy and security team.
He said Clinton will help him to deal with pressing issues around the world, including nuclear concerns surrounding Iran and North Korea.
Clinton, who spoke after Obama made his announcement, said leaving the senate was a difficult decision. But the junior senator from New York noted that she wants to help Obama grapple with global issues.
"America cannot solve these crises without the world and the world cannot solve them without America," she said.
Clinton's husband, former U.S. president Bill Clinton, praised the nomination.
"As an American, I am thankful that president-elect Barack Obama has asked Hillary to be Secretary of State and that she has accepted. As her husband, I am deeply proud," he said in a statement.
Obama's security team will include Robert Gates. The Republican appointee will keep his job as U.S. defence secretary in the new administration. Gates said he wants to serve his government in the same manner that Americans choose to serve in military conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
"I must do my duty as they do theirs. How could I do otherwise?" he asked.
Other appointments include:
- Eric Holder as attorney-general
- Susan Rice as ambassador to the United Nations
- Gov. Janet Napolitano of Arizona as secretary of homeland security
- Retired Marine Gen. Jim Jones as his national security adviser
Joe Biden, the vice president-elect, said the members of Obama's cabinet will help the administration carry out the president-elect's agenda.
"Each member of the team shares our conviction that strength and wisdom must go hand and hand," Biden said at the press conference.
In a question-and-answer session with reporters after the cabinet announcements, Obama said Clinton will make an "outstanding secretary of state." He said picking her did not come from "a light bulb" moment. He said instead he believes she shares his values and always wanted her to be a part of his team.
Obama also noted that he picked his advisers because of their abilities, and noted that he does not want his administration to be hamstrung by "group think."
"I am a strong believer in strong personalities and strong opinions," he said.
"I will be responsible for the vision that this team carries out and I expect them to implement that vision once decisions are made. As Harry Truman said: 'the buck stops with me.'"

I applaud the budget, even though Health Care and education may stay unscathed. Sadly this cannot last and I worry to later this year where cuts will become enviable. If anything, this provides the Wildrose Alliance plenty of ammo when an election is called.

Are you kidding? He's bringing his bitter rivals and prominent Republicans into significant positions of power and authority. When's the last time any leader, American or Canadian, has acted like this? Obama truly is a unifying figure that all the world should take note of.

There is a difference between bring in new, changed ideas and bringing in a cabinet and White House of rookies that have never been there before who will only screw up from day 1 never letting the Obama Administration get off the ground.
If you doubt, after his campiagn of change and new ideas, that Obama will not follow through then I only remind you that he is young, ambitious, and up for re-election in less than 4 years!
Lets wait till he's actually in the White House to see if change will come because I'm certain it will!

Wonder what kind of plan she will have to deal with those middle east countries. ..
We should get both sides - Clinton and Obama - the credit to put things behind! Together they help the country! We just don't see these people in Canada! They all act like KIDS in here!

If more people were to ask the simple question: "How is money created?", then less of these private banks props would get into office.

At least their system works!!
The victor is able to run the country.
Unlike the mess we are heading into with a coalition with government.
God Bless America, when we think they are down,
they end up showing the world how democracy works.

Some 'edumacation' for ya...
She can't be a US Senator and Secretary of State AT THE SAME TIME! She's stepping down from the Senate, so all is good.
US isn't a democracy; it's an oligarchy
said
Now another oligarchy flunkey gets appointed.
Fortunately, Canada's parliamentary system makes the elected representatives slightly more accountable to ordinary citizenry.

While Canadian political parties are sniping at each other, grovelling about in the dirt trying to claw up a little more power for themselves, the largely invisible, non-elected bureaucrats are running our country and making decisions for the citizens of Canada.
As far as Cretien and Broadbent getting together to make decisions on our future, the last I heard neither of them were elected and appointed to the task of dictating policy.
While some individuals detract from the fact that Obama is a "man of the people" with down to earth values, he is the first since JFK to inspire his people and his country to better things. His attitude towards co-operation and a level playing field is admired world wide.
FOR SHAME LIBERALS, NDP, BLOC, GREEN AND ANY OTHERS WHO SEE THIS AS A TIME TO MAKE PERSONAL AND PARTY INTERESTS MORE IMPORTANT THAN WORKING TOGETHER TO PROTECT OUR COUNTRY'S FUTURE.

He is acting in quite a bi-partisan way and it is quite refreshing to see. Can you imagine Harper puttiing a liberal in his cabinet. Obama is very much going to be a unifying president and other leaders might want to follow his lead. Right now with the kind of leadership that Canada is getting, I can only look with envy at the situation in the US when come January, they install a new and very progressive leader with a vision, intelligence and compassion.

Actually - the current Conservative Gov't, through two mandates, has appointed a Liberal Speaker of the House... ;)

=============================
Well nice try Ron BUT Peter Milliken was elected Speaker from a vote of the MP's in the House - NOT from the Conservatives "appointing" him.

Forgive me for disagreeing, but I see December 1st as a great day for North America. In the US, a strong team is forming that will help unite the country and give the West back its metaphorical leader. In Canada, democracy works, the Left has united, and a tryant is being sent packing.
I am very proud of what I see happening throughout North America.
