U.S. president-elect Barack Obama has nominated former first lady Sen. Hillary Clinton as America's top diplomat on the world stage.

Obama said his former rival for the Democratic Party's leadership has been his friend and a source of counsel over the years. He also said Clinton has the abilities to help him tackle some of the world's most pressing issues.

"I am proud that she will be our next secretary of state. She clearly has the ability to advance our interests around the world," he said at a press conference in Chicago, where he also unveiled other members of his foreign policy and security team.

He said Clinton will help him to deal with pressing issues around the world, including nuclear concerns surrounding Iran and North Korea.

Clinton, who spoke after Obama made his announcement, said leaving the senate was a difficult decision. But the junior senator from New York noted that she wants to help Obama grapple with global issues.

"America cannot solve these crises without the world and the world cannot solve them without America," she said.

Clinton's husband, former U.S. president Bill Clinton, praised the nomination.

"As an American, I am thankful that president-elect Barack Obama has asked Hillary to be Secretary of State and that she has accepted. As her husband, I am deeply proud," he said in a statement.

Obama's security team will include Robert Gates. The Republican appointee will keep his job as U.S. defence secretary in the new administration. Gates said he wants to serve his government in the same manner that Americans choose to serve in military conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"I must do my duty as they do theirs. How could I do otherwise?" he asked.

Other appointments include:

  • Eric Holder as attorney-general
  • Susan Rice as ambassador to the United Nations
  • Gov. Janet Napolitano of Arizona as secretary of homeland security
  • Retired Marine Gen. Jim Jones as his national security adviser

Joe Biden, the vice president-elect, said the members of Obama's cabinet will help the administration carry out the president-elect's agenda.

"Each member of the team shares our conviction that strength and wisdom must go hand and hand," Biden said at the press conference.

In a question-and-answer session with reporters after the cabinet announcements, Obama said Clinton will make an "outstanding secretary of state." He said picking her did not come from "a light bulb" moment. He said instead he believes she shares his values and always wanted her to be a part of his team.

Obama also noted that he picked his advisers because of their abilities, and noted that he does not want his administration to be hamstrung by "group think."

"I am a strong believer in strong personalities and strong opinions," he said.

"I will be responsible for the vision that this team carries out and I expect them to implement that vision once decisions are made. As Harry Truman said: 'the buck stops with me.'"

It is interesting that for someone who is supposed to be all about change, it looks like business as usual to me. It looks like Mr. Obama is beholding to many people / groups.

Are you kidding? He's bringing his bitter rivals and prominent Republicans into significant positions of power and authority. When's the last time any leader, American or Canadian, has acted like this? Obama truly is a unifying figure that all the world should take note of.

These selections, while not official yet, sound like decisions made to attempt to quiet party rivalries, and unify a government....very impressive. Meanwhile here at home, we have a Coalition being formed to attempt to take down the government barely two months after election. Cudos to Obama, and his advisors, I hope that this all works out well for them....and in the long run, everyone that he will soon be exerting influence over.

OK Ken, can you explain to me how you would run a couple of wars and the largest recession in history since the Great Depression with a bunch of rookies?

There is a difference between bring in new, changed ideas and bringing in a cabinet and White House of rookies that have never been there before who will only screw up from day 1 never letting the Obama Administration get off the ground.

If you doubt, after his campiagn of change and new ideas, that Obama will not follow through then I only remind you that he is young, ambitious, and up for re-election in less than 4 years!

Lets wait till he's actually in the White House to see if change will come because I'm certain it will!

Good for Hillary but she better be ready for the challenge! She also has to accept the fact that Bill is NOT the boss,Obama is!

Wonder what kind of plan she will have to deal with those middle east countries. ..
We should get both sides - Clinton and Obama - the credit to put things behind! Together they help the country! We just don't see these people in Canada! They all act like KIDS in here!

Maybe Obama really owes her one - helping him being elected. ... LOVE United States and want the best of it!Wish we have some lady like that in Canada!

Good luck to you Hilary. You prove it to us - women - are NOT just acting emtional - but logical!

Hillary is just another prop to the private bank known as the Federal Reserve. Interesting also that Obama would hire the prior Chief of the New York Federal Reserve Bank.

If more people were to ask the simple question: "How is money created?", then less of these private banks props would get into office.

Money = Debt

A quick comment on Hilary Clinton as Seceretary of State...She will be replacing one Condaleeza Rice...this can only help the US and their worldwide reputation. Rice is constantly unprepared and making ridiculous claims, at least now the US will be represented by a very capable and well informed individual, congrats

Let the economy take care of itself in the States. The businesses that go under are not profitable. Charity begins at home and for the States, I think it would be best for them to conduct business as usual. Amercians are proud, loud, caring people and believe they will come through the horrible economic mess with flying colours hopefully with an emphasis on a progressive greener economy.

Interesting that in recent years it has always been a female - Madeleine Albright, Condoleeza Rice (Desi Basmati), and now Hillary Clinton. Maybe the male presidents think that such an important post should go to a female so that they can indirectly have control over it.

Who cares!! After the debacle that is going on in our country thanks to the Liberals and NDP I have no faith in politics or politions anymore. Maybe in 7 weeks some scum politions petition the senate and somehow have a republican replace Hillary in that role. I know that probably can't happen but it just highlites how ridiculous things are here in Canada.

Well, maybe with Hillary the US can have a softer side to their foreign policy instead of the ole Bush way.

Good choice as far as I'm concerned, at least she can find Canada on the map.

Interesting that politics in the USA is going in towards political unity and bi-partisanship but in Canada it's going towards chaos and political confrontation -- so it is likely that the US will quickly recover from the recession that it has largely caused, while Canada will fall further and further into economic decline due to the lack responsible leadership and vision by all the Canadian parties.

Article One, Section Six of the US Costitution does not allow for her appointment. It is in complete violation of the US Constitution! But hey, since when was this a problem! So far, 2/3 rds of the Obama transition team is made up of Clintonites. People can draw their own conclusions but in my opinion the US is no longer in a rut but in a huge black hole out of which it will not emerge with this 'change' of leadership.

The proof will be in the pudding when Obama takes office and starts changing the way things are done in Washington. Will he limit the power of the omipotent lobby groups? Will he make the necassary budgetary cuts that may have a negative impact on some of his supporters' states and program. Will he sit down with Cuba, Iran, North Korea, etc. and talk realistically with those leaders instead of simply sabre rattling? These will be some of the marks of a new era in Washington!

As an American - I'm thrilled to see Hilary in this position. Had her husband not been a former president I'm quite sure she would have made it as VP on Obama's ticket. Both of the Clintons are beloved around the world. Hilary will do a fantastic job smoothing the feathers that Bush ruffled. Kudos to Obama for making such smart choices for the US and putting the best qualified people on his staff. Future governments worldwide should take note of this! Change has definitely come.

Change is like cooking yourself a good meal, it’s not TV dinner and Popcorn you put in the Microwave.

Obama is putting together a recipe made up of experienced, strong minded peoples that know what they are doing let it be Democrat or Republican as they are there to serve their country and “ We the People “ to my friends Americans.

Excellent choice, great team so far Mr. Obama, you are a wise person which is what the world need.

Obama's willingness to put parisan politics aside and simply hire the best people for the job shows that he has an objective view and a willingness to work with rivals, which is something that has been missing from US politics for a long time, and hasn't existed in Canada either, especially since we elected the most partisan PM in Canada's history. Hopefully this move by Obama DOES inspire change - on both sides of the border.

US isn't a democracy; it's an oligarchy

The oligarchy selected two candidates. The voters supposedly chose one of those two.

Now another oligarchy flunkey gets appointed.

Fortunately, Canada's parliamentary system makes the elected representatives slightly more accountable to ordinary citizenry.

Take a bow America! At least your system works far better than the Canadian government circus currently featuring the Liberals, NDP and Bloc Quebecois in "Anything for Power". Here in Canada we taxpayers have too many parties, including a Separist Party, so we can hardly ever get a majority, but like lambs being led to the slaughter we have learned to go broke by constantly paying for elections just so one minority government gets to replace another.

No system in the world can ever be truly perfect, but with the election of Barack Obama as President and his choice of Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State,... America, you are doing PRETTY GOOD!

President-elect Barack Obama today announced Sen. Hillary Clinton as his pick for secretary of state, calling her an "American of tremendous stature who will have my complete confidence." Is that THE CHANGE he was talking about during his campaign? I thought he wanted to stay far from her and the "old washington".

I find it interesting that so many canadians are more interested in american politics then our own. Its also interesting that the same people that want us out of Afghanistan worship a man who wants to put thousands of more troops there ( rightly so) and thinks it is a just cause, and that people who think PM Harper is not good for the environment have not noticed that he and Mr. Obama share the same views on environmental policy. But, you only find him too close to the americans when it is a convenient way for you to bash him.

The ObamaNation (formerly the Republic of the United States of America) will soon be able to carry out their "Progressive" vision, and they did it by telling the Americans they would all get tax breaks except for the rich. His vision was not explained to the people with all his hollow speeches. But the main media love him and that's all that matters. This is just the old guard rising again under a "messianic" leader.

Bipartisan co-operation - what a concept!!!

While Canadian political parties are sniping at each other, grovelling about in the dirt trying to claw up a little more power for themselves, the largely invisible, non-elected bureaucrats are running our country and making decisions for the citizens of Canada.

As far as Cretien and Broadbent getting together to make decisions on our future, the last I heard neither of them were elected and appointed to the task of dictating policy.

While some individuals detract from the fact that Obama is a "man of the people" with down to earth values, he is the first since JFK to inspire his people and his country to better things. His attitude towards co-operation and a level playing field is admired world wide.

FOR SHAME LIBERALS, NDP, BLOC, GREEN AND ANY OTHERS WHO SEE THIS AS A TIME TO MAKE PERSONAL AND PARTY INTERESTS MORE IMPORTANT THAN WORKING TOGETHER TO PROTECT OUR COUNTRY'S FUTURE.

Uh, sorry, as an ex-American I don't see how the USA has a better system than ours in Canada. At least here our elected representatives run the country (or they at least give us that impression), they are more accountable, and we can non-confidence them out of office if we want. Notice how in the USA the people at the top are appointed, not elected. Yes, if Hillary resigns her Senate seat she can accept this appointment. And Obama had better cough up a valid born-in-the-USA birth certificate, pronto. And the USA is not-not-not a democracy; if anything it's a constitutional republic albeit headed down into the abyss. This appointment just goes to show that for all their public bickering, politicians will work together to bring about the NWO. It's all like a gigantic Hollywood production for our entertainment, only it's in the "horror" category. Just wait.

I totally agree Brian,
He is acting in quite a bi-partisan way and it is quite refreshing to see. Can you imagine Harper puttiing a liberal in his cabinet. Obama is very much going to be a unifying president and other leaders might want to follow his lead. Right now with the kind of leadership that Canada is getting, I can only look with envy at the situation in the US when come January, they install a new and very progressive leader with a vision, intelligence and compassion.

Change is defined by the actions of people, not the people themselves. When leading government or private industry, you still need people who have experience, who know how the mechanism works. President-elect Obama has made good choices. It is the execution of direction and duty that will define his presidency, America, and world politics.

Obama ran on a policy of "change". In appointing his Cabinet he has got lots of kudos for being "bi-partisan" and broad minded. All of these appointments are re-treads from the Bush and Clinton Administrations. They are smart, capable Washington hacks with loads of political experience and lots of Capitol Hill connections. Who in the new Cabinet represents "change"?

Well nice try Ron BUT Peter Milliken was elected Speaker from a vote of the MP's in the House - NOT from the Conservatives "appointing" him.

Beverly,

Forgive me for disagreeing, but I see December 1st as a great day for North America. In the US, a strong team is forming that will help unite the country and give the West back its metaphorical leader. In Canada, democracy works, the Left has united, and a tryant is being sent packing.

I am very proud of what I see happening throughout North America.
