CAIRO, Egypt — Al Qaida's No. 2 leader used a racial epithet to insult Barack Obama in a message posted on the Internet on Wednesday, describing the U.S. president-elect in demeaning terms that imply he does the bidding of whites.

Ayman al-Zawahri's message appeared mainly aimed at persuading Muslims and Arabs that Obama does not represent a change in U.S. policies.

He said in the message that Obama is "the direct opposite of honourable black Americans" like Malcolm X, the 1960s African-American rights leader.

In al Qaida's first response to Obama's victory, al-Zawahri also called him -- along with former and current secretaries of state Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice -- "house Negroes."

Speaking in Arabic, al-Zawahri uses the term "abeed al-beit," which literally translates as "house slaves." But al Qaida supplied English subtitles of his speech that included the translation as "house Negroes."

The message also includes old footage of speeches by Malcolm X in which he explains the term, saying black slaves who worked in their white masters' house were more servile than those who worked in the fields.

Malcolm X used the term to criticize black leaders he accused of not standing up to whites.

In Washington, State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said the latest message was just "more despicable comments from a terrorist."

The 11-minute 23-second video features the audio message by al-Zawahri, who appears only in a still image, along with other images, including one of Obama wearing a Jewish skullcap as he meets with Jewish leaders. In his speech, al-Zawahri refers to a Nov. 5 U.S. air strike attack in Afghanistan, meaning the video was made after that date.

Al-Zawahri said Obama's election has not changed American policies he said are aimed at oppressing Muslims and others.

"America has put on a new face, but its heart full of hate, mind drowning in greed, and spirit which spreads evil, murder, repression and despotism continue to be the same as always," the deputy of al Qaida chief Osama bin Laden said.

He said Obama's plan to shift troops to Afghanistan is doomed to fail, because Afghans will resist.

"Be aware that the dogs of Afghanistan have found the flesh of your soldiers to be delicious, so send thousands after thousands to them," he said.

Al-Zawahri did not threaten specific attacks, but warned Obama that he was "facing a jihadi (holy war) awakening and renaissance which is shaking the pillars of the entire Islamic world; and this is the fact which you and your government and country refuse to recognize and pretend not to see."

He said Obama's victory showed Americans acknowledged that President George W. Bush's policies were a failure and that the result was an "admission of defeat in Iraq."

But Obama's professions of support for Israel during the election campaign "confirmed to the Ummah (Islamic world) that you have chosen a stance of hostility to Islam and Muslims," al-Zawahri said.

I guess Al-Zawahri came out of his cave, saw his shadow, made a few comments, and went back in hiding.

It shows he's becoming irrelevant.

The media is idiotic... if they stopped paying attention to Al Queda's moronic dribble they would not have nearly as much influence as they do with many radical muslims! While they do have to report information the media is only serving terrorists when they make such garbage prominent rather than printing it on page 9 in small print and leaving it at that.

Hey be fair!

When the biggest news item is the Big 3 going bankrupt, Somalian pirates attacking the Indian Navy, you gotta come up with something that sizzles!

By the way, I heard Bin Laden's family is rich.....think they can float the bailout loan?

Who cares what he calls anybody? Al Qaeda is not known to be a bastion of tolerance, so I wouldn't get all bent out of shape by what petty, childish name-calling Al-Zawahri flings around...

I figured it wouldn't take long for the radical muslims to realize it is not just Bush they hate, but the Western lifestyle and anybody who is not a radical muslim.

There would be more to worry about if this creep complimented Obama. Who wants to impress people with that mind set? "Gee ma the world's biggest terrorist group likes me, they really like me. Not what anyone wants to hear, thanks.

Al Qaeda must really feel the threat of a powerful intelligent US president. Eight years of the idiot Bush allowed them to point the finger at an intolerant US administration. Obamas desire root out and kill Al Qaeda and to reach out to those who have supported Al Qaeda in the past by providing solutions to perceived insults will blunt the extremist message and will make them irrelevent.

Get out of Iraq and into The Afgan war. Concentrate there for a few years. Kick some ass. Wipe em all out and then come home.

Since the "video" was just a still image, isn't anyone worried this wasn't really him? This could be someone else trying to influence future American foreign policy. Perhaps someone who would like the US to continue to have an enemy that is trying to destroy them, one that must be fought. There's so much deception, it's hard to know what to believe.

...It is very sad that a few radicals reflect so negatively on a much larger group. I for one would like to see all Muslims who do not support these radicals band together and clean house themselves.

I doubt it came from him. If it was a video I'd buy in but in today's world I want evidence not some posting on the internet. I'd just as soon take financial advice from an internet blogger.

Let's see him say that on a video and then I'd believe it. Maybe he said it but maybe not. It's the same story about Bin Laden - news reports, if we all remember, initially reported Bin Laden was mortally wounded in a bombing in the mountains of Afghanistan. Since that day his words only came from audio recordings. Did he lose his camcorder or what?

Bin Laden is dead.

This confirms my belief that our troops should be pulled out of Afghanistan.
There is nothing you can do to change the mindset of these people. It is their way of life. Kill and be killed.
There will always be people who take up the cause.
These wars have been fought for centuries and will continue.
It's time to protect our own country from these acts of violence.

Anyone heard from OBL since the election? No? My guess is because a dead man cannot comment on current events.

I think the "#2" guy is the real leader. Let's get rid of him instead of hunting ghosts.

Why do we give Al-Zawahri a voice by translating his insults and putting them on the internet, therefore spreading his sick message to the whole world?
The media is giving this criminal exactly what he wants.
Instead of babbling to the cameras, why isn't Al-Zawahri with the so called "dogs of Afghanistan" so we can give him a taste of our guns?

Way to go Jay. You must be sitting in comfort and freedom brought about by people who paid the ultimate sacrifice. This is not just a "Yankee" war. Its a world wide war and when they come knocking on your door you will have a different opinion.

It wouldn't have mattered who won the election, they would've said the same crap anyway.

How hypocritical of them, saying that the US spreads hate, etc. I don't agree with all US policies, but they don't deliberately fly planes into buildings full of innocent people!

Just goes to show there likely will be no reasoning with these fundamentalists... nothing would be good enough for them except our destruction.

Ostensively the al-Qaeda message was to tell Muslims not to expect any real change from Washington, but Al Qaeda does nothing unless it has a reason. It trys to stay as out of sight as much as possible untill it strikes or passes a message for a purpose. It believes action speak louder than words, but words are used when there is a purpose.

What is the real purpose here? Simple they want to remove any idea of reconcilaition between the US or the West and radical Islam. They want the US president to be thier enemy. Without this animoasity there is no Jihad without Jihad there is no need for Al Qaeda. No one wants to be redundant.

The problem is al-Zawahri really thinks Muslims are stupid enough to swallow his nonsense. He thinks he can con them into believing he and his ilk are true followers of the prophet, not power hungry terrorists. I am however against killing these idiots. Why? Because they want it. Martyrs only breed more Martyrs. It would be better if these terrorist had their power over the Islamic world taken from them and then died of old age. We should, try to strip them of legitimacy and put them in a cage till they rot.

Sadly, it is the extremists like this man that give good Muslims a bad name. Many many Muslim around the world do not suscribe to this brand of terrorism and violence. As a new Muslim convert ... this is the only thing I fear.. being lumped in with hate-mongers like this. They are every bit as racist and prejudiced as those they oppose and they do it with such impunity. Look at the treatment of women in Afghanistan. I could not survive as a Muslim woman there. Thank Allah for the freedoms and peace we have in Canada. I don't want us to leave Afghanistan until we help make it a safe place for everyone there. However, when you are dealing with this mentality and tribal mentalities its nearly impossible.

This jihad obviously will go on regardless of who is US President. Al-Zawahri has dared to criticize Lord Barry, the one who will bring peace and harmony to the world. Threats are usually followed up by action on both sides until one side prevails. Islam has been spreading throughout the world (their pillars) and is second only to Roman Catholicism by a small percentage. President-elect Obama certainly has his job cut out for him with a worsening world economy and now terrorist threats against our evil ways. When it comes to our enemies seeking our destruction, we can only hope that change will come for the better.
