Canada has vaulted up the rankings to second place in a survey of the best national brands, according to tourism and branding experts as well as international travellers.

Canada moved up from a sixth-place finish last year and a twelfth-place finish two years ago in the Country Brand Index, largely on the strength of a new marketing campaign established three years ago by the Canadian Tourism Commission.

The CTC set out to change the perception of Canada as a place of moose and Mounties to a destination that can offer tourists a wide array of exhilarating adventures.

The CTC's ad campaign features home videos shot by tourists who are:

  • zip-lining in British Columbia
  • dog sledding in the Far North
  • having close encounters with seals while kayaking on the East Coast

(Tourists) are no longer satisfied just seeing Canada from the windows of a bus," Greg Klassen, the CTC's vice president of marketing, said Tuesday on CTV's Canada AM. "They want to get out and have an experience and we're the perfect country for those kinds of experiences."

The Country Brand Index, compiled by international consulting firm FutureBrand, ranks Canada behind only Australia for establishing a reputation as a safe, friendly destination for families.

The United States ranked third.

Rina Plapler, FutureBrand's executive director, said a strong brand will be appealing to travellers looking for a fun, but safe, place to go during an uncertain economic climate when travelling often includes tight security measures.

"In times like this people do want to know that they are going to get quality accommodations, good food, it's going to be easy to travel in and around the country, the people are friendly and welcoming and those are certainties with Canada," Plapler told The Canadian Press.

However, Canada does still have some work to do to compete with top European destinations.

Canada ranked eighth behind first-place Italy as the country most people want to visit.

Klassen said he hopes the CTC's marketing campaign can push Canada into a top-five finish next year.

"The world will be chasing those few customers who will be travelling next year, so one of our focuses is to really hit their emotional hot buttons," Klassen said. "Use our advertising to get in the heart of the traveller so they think of Canada first ahead of many other destinations out there."

that is so cool. Canada rocks! Number two is great -after all how can we compete with Australia? surprised that New Zealand was not first though.

A few years ago, I worked in Tokyo teaching English. Many Japanese people wanted to travel to the North of Canada to see the aurora (northern lights).

About time the tourist board started to advertise in the U.K. that the "Pound" goes twice as far in Canada. What costs a "Dollar" in Canada costs a Pound in the UK.

Canada will always be # 1 eh!

Canada will always be # 1 in my heart.

Having had the good fortune to travel much of this country I can say we have a beautiful country which we can thank God for. It's just awesome and the people friendly.

We ranked second to Australia as a safe place to take a family? Second to Australia, home of 3/4 of the world most venomous animals?
Who's ever been hurt by a beaver?

No need to travel abroad. It's all here, always was, always will be.

How about skating on the worlds largest outdoor rink, the Rideau.
Where to start.. -> NFLD and make your way to BC.

You mean, the second longest rink in the world? (After the Red in Winnipeg!)
So tourists can be challenged to tell us which they prefer, so it is yet another reason to visit! Not to mention the skiing near Ottawa and the family winter park and ice fishing in Winnipeg next to the (world's longest) rink.

That's all well and good, but wrongly it's still considered boring by the younger demographic, with the exception of places like Whistler, who are seeking thrill and excitement.

What's ironic about the survey is the country ahead of us. The Australian Tourism Board indicated on their website last year that Canada was a destination to be cautious of.

Guess the Australian Tourism Board would prefer the world to spend their dollars down under rather than in the True North Strong and Free.

In BC you can ski in the morning, fish for Pacific salmon in the afternoon, golf in the evening and enjoy an outdoor bbq for dinner as you watch the sunset on the ocean! Then the next day you can climb a mountain, walk through the Botanic Gardens, dine on ANY kind of food you wish and enjoy Okanagan's best wine with your dinner. I can't imagine needing to visit Europe. If not BC, maybe Montreal!

As soon as you mention Canada in Asia you tend to get a lot of respect from the people out there. One word that allways comes up is "friendlliness" of the people in Asia.
Keep it up "eh".

Yes,

The "trail rink" in Winnipeg might think it's the longest..., but lets all see how many years it will continues to operate...

The Rideau Canal will always be the real largest rink in the world! Winnipeg has other great things to offer, -40 weather, great starting places for rock bands, such as BTO, The Guess Who, and Neil Young's childhood home...

Of Course Canada is a great place to visit, and ranking number 2 is almost like the Canadian way, look at how we normally fair at the Olympics... The only thing that we as Canadians should really want to be number 1 at is Hockey... Especially at the next Olympics in Vancouver, it's OUR game, in OUR country!

... Whats a "Dollar" here is not a pound in the UK. Unless you can find me $2 beer in a pub or $3Big Mac meal, prices are the same in the UK as they are in Canada. ...

It's hillarious how this kind of ranking is applicable to western world only, which is less than 20% of the Earth's population, or maybe even to the anglo-world only (less than 15% of the world)! :-) The hispanics rate Argentina as #1. The asians rate either Macao or Japan as #1. The ex-USSR rate either Russia or Turkey(!) as #1. Africans rate France as #1. Indians rate Ireland as #1. And of course, all the rankings are based on the exact same criteria: safety, family destination, diversity, etc. ;-) Gotta love statistics! LoL.

Every Canadian MUST travel from one coast to the other at least once in their lives.

I've done so myself and really appreciate what this country has to offer.

The true north strong and free--maybe.
This country is missing the boat.
Canada's north as a brand has yet to be exploited.
Baffin Island, for example, with some major private-public investment could be a world Nordic destination--think airport, seaport. Think casinos, hotels, skiing, midnight sunshine, tax-free tourist zones. Think natural resource development, jobs (service sector and otherwise). Think condos with Arctic vistas and all the comforts and convenience of a similar spot in Toronto or Montreal.
The Canadian north is a brand waiting.
