Democratic candidate Barack Obama razzed John McCain on Saturday over U.S. Vice-President Dick Cheney's endorsement of the Republican presidential candidate.

"I'd like to congratulate Sen. McCain on this endorsement, because he really earned it. That endorsement didn't come easy," Obama said at a Colorado rally Saturday.

He said that Cheney "knows that with John McCain, you get a twofer: George Bush's economic policy and Dick Cheney's foreign policy. And that is a risk the American people cannot afford to take.

Cheney made the endorsement at a Wyoming rally.

"This year, of course, I'm not on the ballot, so I am here ... not to vote for me, but I want to join daughter Liz, who is with me today, join us in casting ... our ballots for John McCain and Sarah Palin," Cheney said.

Dems nervous

Despite polls suggesting Obama is on the brink of a historic landslide win, many Democrats remain nervous that McCain could pull off an upset.

Democrats don't need a long memory to remember the traumatic losses for their party to George W. Bush in both 2000 and 2004.

"We are witnessing, I believe, probably one of the greatest comebacks that you've seen since John McCain won the primary," Rick Davis, McCain's campaign manager, said Friday.

But polls from numerous sources and non-partisan political watchers say otherwise.

"At this point, John McCain probably can't win without divine intervention," Charlie Cook, a respected Washington journalist who specializes in electoral forecasts, wrote Saturday in his National Journal column.

McCain spent much of Saturday in Virginia, a Republican stronghold, where voters have chosen GOP presidential candidates for the past 40 years.

But Obama has dramatically broken through in the state. Real Clear Politics' poll of polls has the Democrat ahead of his opponent by six points.

McCain told supporters that Obama's agenda "apparently ... starts with lowering our defenses and raising our taxes."

He said that while Obama was "running for redistributor in chief, I'm running for commander in chief."

McCain also acknowledged his underdog status.

"We're a few points down but we're coming back," he said. "I'm not afraid of the fight, I'm ready for it and you're going to fight with me."

Obama held attend rallies in Nevada, and then Colorado and Missouri, while his running mate, Joe Biden, took part in rallies in Evansville, Ind., as well as two others in Ohio.

All of the states the Democratic candidates are visiting went Republican in 2004.

In Colorado and Nevada, the polls show that Obama is holding a lead over his opponent, Republican candidate John McCain.

In Missouri, Obama has trailed McCain by three percentage points in two recent polls.

At present, Obama is leading in the polls coming out of Ohio, while he is considered to be in a dead heat with McCain in Indiana.

McCain had rallies in Newport News and Springfield, Va., as well as one in Pennsylvania on Saturday.

Pennsylvania, a traditionally Democratic state that McCain almost certainly needs in order to win the election, has been the focus for much of the Republican campaign in the final week.

McCain has trailed Obama by between four and eight points in recent polls in the state.

McCain will also make an appearance on Saturday Night Live, following in the footsteps of his running mate, Sarah Palin, who appeared on the long-running comedy program in October.

The state of Virginia, on the other hand, is considered a Republican stronghold, with voters having voted for Grand Old Party presidential candidates for the past 40 years.

McCain's running mate, Sarah Palin, was scheduled to attend three Florida rallies in New Port Richey, Polk City and Ocala, as well as two others in Raleigh, N.C., and Glen Allen, Va.

Obama has led Florida in recent polls, but the race is considered tight in the state that decided the controversial 2000 election that brought Bush to office. The race in North Carolina is considered close as well.

Economic issues

University of Toronto professor Arnd Jurgensen told CTV Newsnet Saturday he thought it was key for both candidates to focus on the economy in their remaining public appearances before the election.

"I think that the dominant thing for them to concentrate on and the thing that seems to be on the minds of most voters is the economy," he said.

"Foreign policy issues, as important as they are, seem to have taken a back seat to the real concerns that most people have about paying their bills, about maintaining their jobs, about the market."

Jurgensen said he thought Obama was likely ahead in the polls because of "the general perception that he is stronger on the economy."

Both campaigns were hit with mild "November surprises" on Saturday.

The Associated Press reported that Obama's aunt had been living illegally in the U.S. for the past four years.

The report said Zeituni Onyango, 52, the half sister of Obama's late father and a Kenyan citizen, was ordered to leave the U.S. after her request for asylum was turned down in 2004.

As for the McCain camp, Palin was the victim of a prank call from a Montreal comedy duo, who spoke to the Alaskan Governor claiming to be French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

In the six-minute chat, Palin tells "Sarkozy" that she might run for president in eight years and she would like to go hunting with him.

The comedy duo, known as the Masked Avengers, gave Palin a few outs during the conversation, such as identifying the Canadian prime Minister as singer Stef Carse.

Mr McCain only knows of war and it was impinged on him since he left high school to attend a naval academy. Palin...she took 7 years to complete a communications degree in her persuit to be on television. Both the war-monger and a television reporter don´t have what it takes to ease global tensions especially when they both ascert that talking to the enemy is not an option. In my opinion this ascertion is rooted to my belief that conservatives lack the discipline neccessary to find compromise and common ground.

Obama...a Harvard man who taught constitutional law.

I understand Obama will win but I´m just surprised that Obama had any resistance.

I know I'm probably going to be attacked for my comments, but the biggest mistake people can make is not using critical thinking before they vote. I have watched this election closely listening to a variety of sources and reading as much as possible, and I have never seen so much crucial information withheld from so many. The verbal assaults against those who do think/research is unbelievable. Silence is not golden and leads to restricted freedoms.

I'm a bit of a political junkie,so I watch a lot of coverage on TV and the internet.
Unlike "Reese",I am not at all surprised that Obama has not locked this thing up.I also think Senator Clinton would have been a clear winner months ago.
Obama would have a lock on this if he wasn't carrying such a liberal ideology.I'm not even sure McCain is wrong to suggest socialism is a closer description. And we all know that "liberal" is a dirty word in the USA.I think Obama wins, not because he has the policies,or that America really wants to vote him in.He wins because they want Republicans out.
Unlike in Canada, personal freedoms are highly valued in the USA.The "nanny state" mentality that has infected Canada will not be easily tolerated by Americans.Even on health care, their worst fear is they will end up with a system like ours.
Fortunately for Obama, there is no need to discuss policy during an election campaign. While I'm not suggesting McCain is any better on policy, the lack of discussion give the deault to Obama simply because of Mr.Bush and his incompetent administration.
The real threat to American liberties,is in the make-up of congress and the Senate.A Democrat sweep, like a majority in our parliament, could be like a 4 year, elected dictatorship, but with no way to defeat the government and force an early election.
As bad as Bush has been, the world will soon find that a liberal and inward looking USA,with a protectionist trade sentiment,is almost certain to alter the global power structures. Both economically and militarily.
I hope we don't hear the old refrain that we heard at the beginning of WWII,when many said "let the Europeans fight their own war".
USA isolationism would be a disaster for us all.

President-elect McCain will probably take Pennsylvania. President-elect Obama is going strong in many States and he should get a lot of credit for that. Virginia and Missouri will most likely go to President-elect McCain while the southern states may swing some votes towards Obama due to his strong leadership, yet lack of experience. President-elect McCain, will certainly take the core Republican vote.

Your guess is as good as mine who will win this competive Election. It will be interesting to watch no doubt!

@DougBC. our medical system is ranked top 3 in the world and CIA´s World Fact website also concludes that Canadians live longer than Americans and have lower infant mortality rates than Americans. The clear reason is that the American system is a for-profit system unlike ours. I can´t fathom how they - with higher mortality rates - would not envy us. Could you imagine shareholders in Canada determining what is and isn´t covered under your medical plan? I´m a shareholder for a bank and guess what? I want higher user fee´s...is that surprising to you? It´s the same thing with American health plan it´s NOT socialism it´s all about making money. Thousands of Americans lose their homes every WEEK and go bankrupt over medical costs. Thousands come to Canada for treatment and leave without paying the bill because in America they´ll send a bill collector out for you.

Perhaps you don´t appreciate the desperation of your neighbours but economic times are changing downwards and it´s estimated that 25% of Americans could be jobless within 10 years and without medical. Are you next? Will you only then become an advocate for limited socialism when it´s you that stands to lose EVERYTHING you´ve worked for your entire life? Perhaps you don´t understand why Americans are endorsing Obama...he promises a similar system. Only doctors and stakeholders are against it.

At any other point in history, a guy like McCain would have utterly crushed ANY opponent in a presidential bid. Unfortunately, for this experienced and politically moderate war hero, he's been smothered in toxic anti-Bush rhetoric and (owing to a poorly orchestrated campaign) hasn't been able to escape the Obama-vs.-Bush falsity.

At any other point in history, a guy like Obama would have been crushed by ANY opponent in a presidential bid. He is a left-of-centre liberal and, moreover, a political lightweight with no executive experience and only limited senatorial experience. He is, however, educated, intelligent, rather eloquent...and loaded with $$$$. Obama is entirely style over substance, and has been running the best campaign money can buy.

The American people want change, and many are desperate for it. This desperation has, obviously, favoured Obama. The Media loves him. It's an exciting Hollywood "story" with the sweet smack of Disney syrup. McCain represents MEASURED change, for the sake of economic and social improvement. Boring. Prudent; but boring.

The winner on November 4th will be determined by the split between those who are THINKING and those who are simply FEELING; those who are PRAGMATIC and those who are merely WISHFUL.

reece: "Mr McCain only knows of war"

They said the same thing about Reagan and he won the Cold War without a shot.

Doug: "USA isolationism would be a disaster for us all."

Spot on. A democrat in the White House and a democrat Congress will spell disaster for the economy in Canada and the US. Look at what Hoover did during the Great Depression. They're proposing the same thing. You can also kiss NAFTA and a bunch of jobs goodbye in Canada if they win both the executive and legislative branches.

Reece: "Thousands come to Canada for treatment and leave without paying the bill..."

That's BS. Americans only envy the Canadian system for low prescription costs. They'll skip on waiting 6 months for an MRI in Canada so they can get it that afternoon. When I was visiting some years ago, my son needed stitches and because I had a U.S. address, I had to pay for the emergency visit by credit card and then had another bill sent to me for the actual services. There are no shortgages of doctors anywhere in the U.S. Can you say the same about MRI and doctors in Canada? I think not.

Wendy: "So much mud slinging from McCain and Palin."

It's come from both sides as in every election. Being in a battleground state, I've seen it from both camps. The media has also repeatedly attacked the McCain ticket. NBC's coverage was shown by the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism to be 73% negative while Obama was 21%. Surpsingly, the most fair was Fox News that has 40% negative coverage for BOTH candidates.

Gail: "The verbal assaults against those who do think/research is unbelievable."

The most true and intelligent comment I've seen about this election on these boards.

Exciled Canadian: I agree with everything you say except one point. If Obama wins on Tuesday, he will not be another Hoover. The Dems won't cancel NAFTA. They (Clinton) started NAFTA in 1994. Obama will look at the books, and realize just how close our economies are intertwined and realize he cannot under any circumstances pull out of NAFTA. He would not only cripple Canada's economy, he would also cripple the US economy far worse than it currently is.

If Obama wins (I don't think he will), he will be a disaster for the U.S. economy (from recession to depression), for the Canadian economy (Reese - kiss your job goodbye - oops, union leaders and teachers never lose their jobs), for the U.S. military (it will take 15 years to regain the strength he will stupidly give up), and for anyone who has worked hard to excel. People like Barak Obama thrive on mediocrity, on the dependency of hoardes of underachievers, and on the politics of celebrity over substance. The U.S. does not need another silver-tongued Harvard lawyer/wealth-spreading socialist. They need a leader. Beware the wolf in sheep's clothing that is Barack Obama.

The United States will be a better place with Obama and the Democrats in charge, especially if they get the 60+ Senate seats that they are dreaming of and control of the House of Representatives.

Too bad that we dumb Canucks voted that twit Harper back in. Maybe this time the stupid idiots in the Liberal Party will put a real leader on top. Either Bob Rae or Mike Iggy would be perfect. Unfortunately we're stuck with the Reform Party for at least 3 years. Perfect timing for a Liberal majority along with the Democrat win at all senior levels.

C'est la vie.

You have it all backwards, Bush wrecklessly invaded Iraq, Obama would rightfully pull out of Iraq. If McCain gets in, the US economy will stay low where Bush has it. The only way the US has a chance of recovery is if Obama gets elected. If McCain gets elected, the world will stay in a mess at least a while longer and it would take nothing short of a miracle for the US to recover.

I agree McCain's policies closely resemble the policies of the last 8 years of Bush's reign. Frankly, the US of A has been brought to its knees from the unqualified and illogical work of the Bush Administration. Surely, America does not want to further this damage. Today is a new day and that requires new ideas and changes for the future. McCain must not be elected because he implements same policies for a changing nation.

Hopefully the Americans do the right thing and leave the Repubs on the curb. Throughout his career McCain has been referred to as a "war hero", this is patently false. Being shot down and held prisoner does not make one a hero. What great sacrifice did he make? How many of his compatriots did he save with his bravery under fire? The answer is none. He survived in a prison camp and may be tough, but a hero? Compare his exploits with those CMH recipients from WWII or those decorated with a Victoria Cross. Not even close.

"As bad as Bush has been, the world will soon find that a liberal and inward looking USA,with a protectionist trade sentiment,is almost certain to alter the global power structures. Both economically and militarily" . . . Bush has already ruined America's reputation internationally and now destroyed it financially. The USA is no longer a super power because its debt is held by foreign countries.

We are witnessing the fall of a nation like never before in history and Obama can never change that. In fact, no future president can!!!

Waaaay too much American election coverage on Canadian TV

E.L. O'Connell
said

DOUG in BC describes Canada as a "nanny "state", as if providing health care to one's citizens is shameful. And to say America would not accept a system like ours implies America is content to allow 50 million of its citizens to go without healthcare at all.
To say Americans would reject our system outright is to take a position based solely on ignorance. It is woefully apparent that healthcare costs are a real issue to those who have coverage, as well as to those who have nothing at all. Something, namely a Canadian healthcare model, will always be preferable than nothing. And there are 50 million Americans who agree with this assertion.
People like DOUG in BC are a dime a dozen: Always willing to spout off on how we should interpret information on a given topic, with the hope his augmented vituperation will drown out the voices of those whom are most affected by the issue in question.
Making matters worse, DOUG also asserts that the word "liberal" is a dirty word in the USA right now. But in the same breath, he insists "American liberties" are under duress.
Do we really need to explain to DOUG that the root for both "liberal" and "liberties" is the word "liber", which means free?
Such a contradiction suggests DOUG should speak less, and listen more.

DC in AB, I hope that NAFTA won't be scrapped but Obama did say he would insist on renegotiating the deal when campaigning against Hillary in Ohio. he even said he'd pull out unilaterally if he didn't get the deal he wanted. At the very least, a democrat in the WH with a democratic congress heavily lobbied by unions will certainly put NAFTA back on the table in America. Quite frankly, the reason manufacturing jobs in Ohio are being lost isn't because of NAFTA, but because corporate taxes have been so high that companies are leaving for greener pastures.

As far as my Hoover comparison, when the stock market crashed in '29, Hoover raised the taxes for the top income earners and companies which prevented much needed infusion of capital to get things back in order. Obama proposes to hike taxes for those earning $250,000 (or $120,000 depending on who you listen to) which would reduce the ability of small business owners to invest more into their business and the economy as a whole. Obama also has been vocal about trade protectionism in regard to South Korea and Colombia. These were the same mistakes Hoover did and the stock market did not go back to pre-Depression levels until 1956. Government simply cannot raise taxes on anyone in this type of climate.

I know people are mad about what happened and they want to "stick it" to the big corporations. I myself think both sides of the aisle played a role in this disaster. However, this is not time to seek revenge on a class of society, or to come up with a plan that is more political than economic. Cooler heads need to prevail to make sure we don't do something that will create a bigger problem down the road.
