An RCMP officer who was involved in the tragic Taser incident at Vancouver airport last year is now facing charges of impaired driving after a motorcyclist died in a weekend collision.

The victim, 21-year-old Orion Hutchinson, was driving his motorcycle Saturday night in Delta, B.C., when he was hit by a Jeep. He died at the scene.

RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Tim Shields said an off-duty officer was involved in the collision.

The officer, who has not been identified, was released and faces charges of impaired driving causing death and having a blood alcohol level exceeding the .08 legal limit.

"I need to say that, on behalf of RCMP members and employees across Canada, this is the most unimaginable heartbreak ever and we are sick about it," said Shields. "The officer involved is predictably devastated, as are we," he said.

He also gave the force's "deepest and most heartfelt and sincere condolences" to the victim's family.

The officer involved in the collision is a member of the RCMP's Olympic Integrated Security Unit. The group is tasked with planning security for the Vancouver 2010 Games.

He was also one of four RCMP agents who confronted Robert Dziekanski, a Polish immigrant who did not speak English, at the Vancouver airport last October.

Dziekanski had become agitated after spending hours trying to find his mother in the airport, and began throwing furniture in the customs area. Four officers arrived at the scene and within seconds they shocked Dziekanski with a Taser. He later died.

On Tuesday, Shields said the officer would not be identified until he is formally charged and has his first court appearance on Jan. 15.

The RCMP is not involved in the investigation of the fatal collision.
