SASKATOON Former premier Lorne Calvert has officially announced he will be stepping down as leader of the Saskatchewan NDP.
Calvert made the announcement at a meeting in Saskatoon.
He says he will stay on as leader until a replacement can be chosen.
Calvert was met by a packed room of supporters who cheered, hooted and hollered as he entered the room.
After 16 years in power, his party was relegated to official Opposition in last fall's election by the right-leaning Saskatchewan Party.
His leadership was unchallenged at the NDP convention in March, but he told reporters that he likely wouldn't stick around for another election

I applaud the budget, even though Health Care and education may stay unscathed. Sadly this cannot last and I worry to later this year where cuts will become enviable. If anything, this provides the Wildrose Alliance plenty of ammo when an election is called.
