For the second time in five days, Liberals are accusing Conservative Leader Stephen Harper of plagiarism.
In a press release issued by the Liberals, Ottawa-South candidate David McGuinty accuses Harper of copying a speech given by former Ontario Premier Mike Harris in 2002.
The press release compares the speaking notes used by Harris on December 4, 2002, which are posted on the website of the Montreal Economic Institute:
"Thinking about things from a new and different perspective is never easy. It takes courage, conviction and the strength to know that in taking a new and innovative course, you are making change for the better. Genuine leaders are the ones who do the right thing."
Two months later, on February 19, 2003, Harper gave a similar address in the House of Commons in response to the Liberal budget:
"Thinking about things from a new and different perspective is not about reading the polls and having focus group tests. It is never easy because it takes courage, conviction and the strength to know that taking a new and innovative course is going to make change for the better. Genuine leaders are the ones who do the right thing."
The new allegations come just days after a campaign worker for the Conservatives resigned after admitting he used parts of a speech from then-Australian prime minister John Howard in a 2003 speech for then-opposition leader Stephen Harper.
Dan Dugas, a Conservative spokesman, shrugged off the latest plagiarism accusation as a Liberal plan to "deflect attention from their lack of an economic plan," The Canadian Press reported.
He added that the Liberals had found 44 similar words out of a nearly five-thousand word speech.
Still, Dugas wouldn't say who actually wrote the Harper speech.
Meanwhile, McGuinty accused the Conservative leader of lacking the capacity to think for himself.
"It's time for the prime minister to take responsibility for his repeated plagiarism, for passing off the thoughts and words of others as his own. Or perhaps he'll simply find another junior speech writer to fire," McGuinty said in the release.
The Conservatives initially downplayed Liberal candidate Bob Rae's accusations of plagiarism on Tuesday.
But Conservative aide Owen Lippert, who had been Harper's former speechwriter, took responsibility for cribbing Howard's words and resigned.
"Neither my superiors in the office of the leader of the Opposition nor the leader of the Opposition was aware that I had done so," Lippert said in a statement.
"I apologize to all involved and have resigned my position from the Conservative campaign."

I applaud the budget, even though Health Care and education may stay unscathed. Sadly this cannot last and I worry to later this year where cuts will become enviable. If anything, this provides the Wildrose Alliance plenty of ammo when an election is called.

The liberals need to stop complaining about pointless issues, and start talking about policies.
What next - a huge media release on his sweater?
This is proof of no leadership in the Liberal party. Mr. Dion better start packing, he is moving out of the official opposition house

Bobby Kennedy used other speakers words as well.
In fact at Bobby Kennedy's funeral his brother Ted Kennedy used a quote aboout seeing things as they should be and saying why not?
When in fact those were not his words at all.
So who really cares.

This is silly gotcha politics again, dredging up past comments, speeches or articles in a desparate attempt to make Harper look awful, cold or incompetent.
From all appearances, this is simply involves a speech writer who was cutting corners to provide Harper with material to express his own point of view. The words may have been lifted from some other leader but clearly and more importantly their views on the matter were in agreement.
Obviously, this is not a practise that we want to encourage among the speech writers but I hardly think this is a case of borrowing foreign policy from Australia.
You know, if the Liberals want to go back far enough, they can probably get some primary school classmate sign a statement that Stephen Harper called him names as a child.
Give me a break!

You think it's No-News worth of information, but I tell you, if the PM is not able to articulate his own ideas, maybe he will go and borrow someone else's agenda to govern the country with.

Wake up and what? Vote Liberal? Articulate his ideas? Dion couldn't articulate an idea if he had a gun to his head. And enough of the "wake up people" crap from all you lefties out there. I think most Candaians are fully awake and that's why they are not keen on flushing the country away with Dion's Green Shift. Oh sorry that's not part of his platform anymore right? I'm noty sure since it changes day to day. It's pretty obvious who needs to wake up.

Dion introduces the Green Shift, can't sell tax increases Rae and Ignatieff et al are dispatched to try to explain it to the electorate and speak for him.. David McGuinty is assigned the task of digging into the history books and Hansard to see what Mr Harper says that might be the same as was said years ago... Here's a quote for all you Liberal posters...."Desperate times require Desperate measures". Not sure who said that but just wanted you to see that it is a quote.. Go Steven Go.

Their words do not matter anyway, it's what they are doing that's important.
So instead of wasting his time or money for the writers they are just copying and pasting. Simple and efficient!
Stephane Dion must learn and use. We all know who he is and how corrupt his party is. Why waste time to look better than you really are?

If it only happened once, it could be forgotten.
However, if it occurs a second time, it makes a person reconsider the initial allegation.
Either Harper is very naive and therefore, shouldn't be PM or his writer is overpaid for the work he did.
I believe both arguments apply in this case.

The same old Liberals. I would respect them more if 5 years ago they brought this up and pointed it out then and then brought it up again. But holding onto this for five years so they can simply pull it out when they think it best fits their need is stupid. They have nothing to offer except... look look, look what he did... see, see, he did it.
The only reason we did not hear from the Liberals before about all these speeches is because they though they were going to win. But they lost, they are really bad losers.
Hey Bob, can you go back more then 5 years and give me my money back that you took from me in Ontario? You remember, when you were in power. Or Dion, can we go back more then 5 years and get my vote back when the Liberals promised me they would be drop the GST just to get into power and then did nothing. I would like to re-vote.
What some more, I have a whole war chest full of broken Liberal lies from the past. How about the 11 times you promised child care, Hey Dion, my kids are all grown up now, thanks for the child care... nice job!
I have more but can only post 300 characters. Sorry got to go to work now and earn some of the taxes you what to take from me. Good luck!

To dismiss this as a "pointless issue" or that "all speeches are the same" is a such a load. It speaks to the fundamental credibility of the individual. Oh, and Harper being this country's biggest control-freak/micro manager you can not tell me that he was completely ignorant of the language in these speeches!

Come on guys, give me a break... all the political leaders hire speech writers. Just like any other job that gets contracted out, sometimes you get burned.
Although, if you want to criticize people for stealing words or phrases, how about Dion stealing the term "Green Shift" for his environmental tax... er, I mean plan.

I think you should run for the Liberals. Dion is going to be sent packing after his dismal failure to third place in the election giving the Leader of the Opposition to Jack Layton.
David McGuinty, Iggy, Rae and Hall-Findlay will run again but I think you ought to also after all you post here 12 times a day - ya may as well get involved and put that mighty brain to work.

Mr. Harper very clearly spelled out that his government has in fact been working for many months to put policies in place to protect Canadians from the kinds of things the Americans are going through right now. Some policies are extensions of Liberal policies - granted - others are new policies. The media has widely reported the Conservatives have carried through on over 50% of their election promises from last time and will likely seal the deal on almost all the rest if given a majority - to the benefit of all of us. You can't espouse all that in a sound bite. There's no "hidden agenda". He spelled it out last night, but you had to pay attention to the entire broadcast - not just wait for a funny quip like Mr. Layton was lying in wait for. He was at it again today with his "sweater" cheap shots. He's proving nothing with them. Mr. Harper has a plan; had HAD a plan for months. Anyone who says he doesn't just plain doesn't get it and should stop embarrassing themselves by admitting that in public.

McGuinty is Dions environmental critic the lame brain who is behind the much hated Green Shaft tax grab.
Ottawa South residents and Canadians are very naive to believe McGuinty has their best interests at heart.
What McGuinty doesn't inform us about his plan is that the Green Shift has admin costs of 25% that is a lot of coin on $40 BILLION DOLLARS.
Revenue neutral is a blatant misrepresentation.
