The Conservative candidate for B.C.'s Skeena-Bulkley Valley insists naked photos taken of her in her office are not an issue for the party.

Sharon Smith, the mayor of Houston, B.C., grabbed worldwide attention five years ago when pictures of her wearing nothing more than a smile and her mayor's robes were widely circulated on the Internet.

Copies of the pictures were allegedly copied from her computer and circulated around the small mill town.

In one full-length photograph, Smith is seen seated naked with the mayor's medallion around her neck.

Speaking from Smithers, B.C., Smith told CTV the Conservative party is aware of the pictures, and they were never an issue in her bid for office.

"They've known since I put my name forward for the riding and the federal candidacy," she said.

Smith calls the photos "a personal thing" that should have no impact in her future political career.

"My community has spoken to me," she said. "They reelected me for a second term as mayor and people say they want me to represent them, so that's what I'm going on."

Appearing at a luncheon with Smith in Smithers, Conservative Gary Lunn says the photos don't matter to the party.

"This election is about leadership. Sharon has shown leadership in the riding and on council so we're very proud to have her as our candidate here," he said.

After the picture scandal emerged in late 2003 some councillors and local residents called for Smith to quit her job as mayor, but she refused stating the photos were personal and had been stolen from a house party.

In a letter to the local paper, Houston Today, Smith said she was hurt and embarrassed, and that her privacy had been violated. "These photos are private property, belonging to my husband and me."

The Conservative candidate is now running against New Democrat Party incumbent Nathan Cullen, who took the riding in 2004, and won again in 2006. Also in the race are Liberal Corrina Morhart and the Green Party's Hondo Arendt.

Some people really need to 'get a life'. She likely did this after hours and they are private. Why do people only see the negative side to anything ? Is she a good mayor; these are more important issues. They were stolen.

Seriously? Ugh, what was she THINKING!?

But, now if that was a Liberal....Harper would be ALL over that!

Whats this got to do with Green Shift, environment, economy, Afghanistan, or anything relevant?

Have to admit though she's not bad though.

In this day and age, even the most naive person should know not to take pictures of anything that you don't want to show up somewhere. It has happened to so many people, especially people in the public eye, won't they ever learn?

I sure don't to see my mayor naked. eeew

I don't think she should be fired, but maybe the courts should have a new charge for people being so stupid. Up to the voters now.

What difference does it make on some ones competence? Maybe Stephan Dion or Jumping Jack should go around naked for a while, It might get them votes. Canadians appear to be easily offended these days. Naked pictures made 5 years ago? Get over it.

Woohoo! Introducing Canada's Sarah Palin! This woman is H-O-T! Ouch!

Relax folks. Seeing as women can now walk around topless legally, I fail to see the issue here. They were private photos that very clearly were circulated by someone in at attempt to embarass this individual; imagine someone circulating one of your secrets around. So she and her hubbie indulged in some photos - we should all be so brave. Unless she intends to represent her riding nude, this is hardly newsworthy. CTV did not need to publish the photo again - if it was stolen in the first place, CTV is simply perpetuating the immaturity of this. How highly unprofessional. Does she have a brain? Can she adequately represent her riding? Where does she stand on the major issues? These are the questions to be asking; not how she and her husband indulge within their sex lives.

The bottom line is "Has She Done A Good Job?" Whether or not she once posed nude should have nothing to do with the job at hand...

Poor Harper. Poor, poor Harper. It is sooo hard to find good help.

I've changed my mind. Since the photos were taken in her office and not at home or some other private place, she has shown a serious lack of judgement. Perhaps she should be turfed for using her office in a manner other than what it was intended for.

If she looks as good as Sarah Palin, it is ok. If she looks like Libby Davies, she should resign.

One thing is for certain as all of these revelations start surfacing in this election, none of these parties are lilly white.

In fact all these parties are willing to run candidates (any candidate almost) if it will guarantee another elected MP for their party in Ottawa.

Some are admitted "pot" smokers...some are admitted private party strippers and God knows what else is lurking and hiding within these "parties".

Nothing and I do mean NOTHING surprises me anymore.

If I were in charge of the making of final decisions on such matters, I would let my good conscious and heart and above all "common sense" decide and dictate for me.

POT SMOKERS AND STRIPPERS WOULD DEFINITELY BE REMOVED.....among other unapproved and unacceptable behaviour from any hopefulls running for elected office......PERIOD.

Seriously, I am very anti-conservative, but in this case I totally support leaving her alone because this was clearly a case of someone stealing a photo not meant for public display. Good for her, and bad for whoever rained this indignity on her.

Are some of your out of your minds in thinking this is alright in anyway?

The photo was not taken in the comfort of her own home, they were taken at her office, in her office chair with her Mayor's medallion on!!!

Come on! Where is there anything right with this. She should be canned.

Period.

Disinterested Third Party
said

Oh, come on. So the mayor had a little fantasy thing going on, get over it.

The real question is: Can she do a good job. I personally don't know, don't live in the area, but she was re-elected, and putting 2 and 2 together, after the photos were circulated.

I'd be more concerned about Dion's 'claim' that he can't speak english as a result of a 'hearing problem', he speaks french just fine.

Having been to Quebec, I think I know what hearing problem he suffers from!!

While posing nude in and of itself is a personal matter, it ceases to be so when one is sitting in a public office with the chain of authority around her neck. The office and the symbol of it is public and one that is entrusted to the person elected to hold that position. The question of nudity need not come into play rather the cavalier attitude demonstrated toward her position as mayor is the issue. Why would one want a person in office who has shown disrespect for her position. It may be ok with the people of her riding but I certainly do not want a member of Canada's parliament who demonstrates lack of good judgement and disrespect for the symbols of office. It seems a lot of Conservatives are demonstrating this cavalier attitude these days!

Do you Liberals not remember that Bob Rae skinny dipped naked on Rick Mercer's tv show on national television? Where is your outcry? Or are you biased because this time it is a woman? Nudity is not immoral. Unethical politicians are.

What about Bob Rae showing his a-- on CBC (The Mercer Report)? At least these were personal pictures that were stolen, not a publicity stunt on national TV.

I live in Houston and I think that it was in poor taste to take nude photos in the town office. Her actions show her lack of good judgement.

Let's not forget that the pictures were private and were stolen from her computer.

It would be nice if some of you righteous Liberals would remember Mr. Trudeau's comment that government and (for that matter the public) have NO place in the bedrooms of the nation.

Rather than talking about stupid issues like this maybe the Liberals and your supporters should spend more time explaining to voters about the GREEN SHIFT.

These were private photos, not meant for public consumption, STOLEN from her residence and placed on the internet. If the photos had not been stolen the public would be none the wiser.

In comparison, Bob Rae agreed to jump nude into a lake with Rick Mercer for a TV show -- public consumption.

As a former Houston resident, I was appauled to see this happen in the chambers of the town offices. Yes it may be her own buisness in her own home, but not how it actually happened. Sad that her kids had thrown a party and pity on Sharon that she didnt password protect her computer. However despite this, Sharon has been a great mayor in Houston and has made alot happen there.

If the other parties in this election use these pictures as a way to slam the PC Party, then I'd be less inclined to vote for that party. I give Sharon Smith a lot of credit to take the stand she did at the time back in 2003 and now. I don’t doubt those pictures were stolen and that is what we should be talking about here. And to all you morons that are calling her ugly or to fire her, get a life! She’s got more balls than you do!

Oh, and it's alright for Bob Rae to show himself naked, jumping into a lake with Rick Mercer.

This is all so ridiculous. In an age with more media channels and internet coverage available than ever before, this whole thing is playing out like a bad episode of some reality TV show.

On another note, perhaps some bored sociologist out there might take a survey of pro-conservative and pro-liberal posts for spelling errors....! It seems that a large portion of Harper's troops joined up after failing to qualify for the school spelling bees...:)

I recall seeing this 5 years ago, when I was 14, and my opinion hasn't really changed. We, as a society, really have to get over our body phobia and realize that there is nothing wrong with simple Even under the law, public nudity is not illegal unless it is for sexual purposes. This has been made much harder since we are now inundated with American news and opinion which promote their very conservative, even repressive, views regarding both nudity and sex. If anything, Ms Smith should be commended for her courage and her self-confidence. Here is a woman, a politician, with nothing to hide.

As for the picture displayed with the story, may I ask why the ladies breasts are blurred? This wouldn't have been done if she were male. In Canada, a women’s breasts are no more indecent or illegal than the male breast. In ON and BC specifically, a woman can go without a top anywhere a man can. When did the CTV start following American rules regarding the female breast? The FCC has no power here that I am aware of. This is nothing less than gender discrimination on the part of CTV and a correction of the picture to its natural state would be a positive action on their part.

The only thing I felt was wrong (besides someone "stealing" and posting the private photos) was wrong - is not the nakedness - but the fact that she used her office and chain in the pics.

That smacks to me of an inflated sense of entitlement (like most of our conservative government politicians, and before them the Liberals) and possibly an abuse of authority.

Already, I would state that I believe that she is *NOT* MP material.

In a related story, the conservative MP from the adjacent riding (Dick Harris in Prince George) "appointed" this person (Sharon Smith) as the "go to" person saying the current elected MP for the riding (MP Nathan Cullen) was "not part of the gvernment".

What an A**H**** - clearly demonstrating the conservative's contempt for the democratic process, the electorate, and our country.

This is the legacy of this issue - and not getting any airtime compared to the naked thing.

This is a new media low in the ongoing daily smear the Conservatives campaign. Will you be doing a piece and posting pics of Bob Rae's bare arse, and Scott Brisson nude leaning against the bus, or the one I'd really rather forget, of Svend Robinson nude. Frankly, stuff like this turns voters after from the left.

The news should absolutely matter to the conservative party and to constituents! This shows a lack of judgement that we've seen with several candidates and in fact with a senior cabinet minister. The voters have a choice and there are candidates with better judgment happy to accept their support.

I'm sorry, but it is simply inappropriate to get naked in a public office... even after hours! And while I agree that what she does with her husband on her own time is no one's business, what she does in the mayoralty office is always public business. Bottom line - This was poor judgment on her part, and it's fair game to look at her conduct in the mayoralty office.
