The Conservative candidate for B.C.'s Skeena-Bulkley Valley insists naked photos taken of her in her office are not an issue for the party.
Sharon Smith, the mayor of Houston, B.C., grabbed worldwide attention five years ago when pictures of her wearing nothing more than a smile and her mayor's robes were widely circulated on the Internet.
Copies of the pictures were allegedly copied from her computer and circulated around the small mill town.
In one full-length photograph, Smith is seen seated naked with the mayor's medallion around her neck.
Speaking from Smithers, B.C., Smith told CTV the Conservative party is aware of the pictures, and they were never an issue in her bid for office.
"They've known since I put my name forward for the riding and the federal candidacy," she said.
Smith calls the photos "a personal thing" that should have no impact in her future political career.
"My community has spoken to me," she said. "They reelected me for a second term as mayor and people say they want me to represent them, so that's what I'm going on."
Appearing at a luncheon with Smith in Smithers, Conservative Gary Lunn says the photos don't matter to the party.
"This election is about leadership. Sharon has shown leadership in the riding and on council so we're very proud to have her as our candidate here," he said.
After the picture scandal emerged in late 2003 some councillors and local residents called for Smith to quit her job as mayor, but she refused stating the photos were personal and had been stolen from a house party.
In a letter to the local paper, Houston Today, Smith said she was hurt and embarrassed, and that her privacy had been violated. "These photos are private property, belonging to my husband and me."
The Conservative candidate is now running against New Democrat Party incumbent Nathan Cullen, who took the riding in 2004, and won again in 2006. Also in the race are Liberal Corrina Morhart and the Green Party's Hondo Arendt.

I applaud the budget, even though Health Care and education may stay unscathed. Sadly this cannot last and I worry to later this year where cuts will become enviable. If anything, this provides the Wildrose Alliance plenty of ammo when an election is called.

I don't think she should be fired, but maybe the courts should have a new charge for people being so stupid. Up to the voters now.

She should not have worn her mayor's medallion in the picture then!

In fact all these parties are willing to run candidates (any candidate almost) if it will guarantee another elected MP for their party in Ottawa.
Some are admitted "pot" smokers...some are admitted private party strippers and God knows what else is lurking and hiding within these "parties".
Nothing and I do mean NOTHING surprises me anymore.
If I were in charge of the making of final decisions on such matters, I would let my good conscious and heart and above all "common sense" decide and dictate for me.
POT SMOKERS AND STRIPPERS WOULD DEFINITELY BE REMOVED.....among other unapproved and unacceptable behaviour from any hopefulls running for elected office......PERIOD.

The photo was not taken in the comfort of her own home, they were taken at her office, in her office chair with her Mayor's medallion on!!!
Come on! Where is there anything right with this. She should be canned.
Period.

The real question is: Can she do a good job. I personally don't know, don't live in the area, but she was re-elected, and putting 2 and 2 together, after the photos were circulated.
I'd be more concerned about Dion's 'claim' that he can't speak english as a result of a 'hearing problem', he speaks french just fine.
Having been to Quebec, I think I know what hearing problem he suffers from!!

It would be nice if some of you righteous Liberals would remember Mr. Trudeau's comment that government and (for that matter the public) have NO place in the bedrooms of the nation.
Rather than talking about stupid issues like this maybe the Liberals and your supporters should spend more time explaining to voters about the GREEN SHIFT.

On another note, perhaps some bored sociologist out there might take a survey of pro-conservative and pro-liberal posts for spelling errors....! It seems that a large portion of Harper's troops joined up after failing to qualify for the school spelling bees...:)

As for the picture displayed with the story, may I ask why the ladies breasts are blurred? This wouldn't have been done if she were male. In Canada, a women’s breasts are no more indecent or illegal than the male breast. In ON and BC specifically, a woman can go without a top anywhere a man can. When did the CTV start following American rules regarding the female breast? The FCC has no power here that I am aware of. This is nothing less than gender discrimination on the part of CTV and a correction of the picture to its natural state would be a positive action on their part.

That smacks to me of an inflated sense of entitlement (like most of our conservative government politicians, and before them the Liberals) and possibly an abuse of authority.
Already, I would state that I believe that she is *NOT* MP material.
In a related story, the conservative MP from the adjacent riding (Dick Harris in Prince George) "appointed" this person (Sharon Smith) as the "go to" person saying the current elected MP for the riding (MP Nathan Cullen) was "not part of the gvernment".
What an A**H**** - clearly demonstrating the conservative's contempt for the democratic process, the electorate, and our country.
This is the legacy of this issue - and not getting any airtime compared to the naked thing.

Clank clank clank, down the election trail goes Harper with his growing bag of hammers.
Too funny, how's he recruit his candidates anyway ?
Oh who cares, before long he will rival Jacob Marley clank clank clank - and just in time for Christmas ... well almost.
Why anyone would vote for these birds is beyond me.
