A nine-month-old baby who went missing in Toronto last week has turned up at the Hospital for Sick Children, police have confirmed to CTV.ca.
The child's parents were arrested at the scene after a short stand-off with hospital officials and police. The boy is now in the care of the Children's Aid Society while he remains in the hospital for tests.
At around 10 a.m. Sunday, a man and woman brought the boy to the hospital but authorities say they were reluctant to hand him over to doctors.
Officials were worried for the child because he was diagnosed with severe malnutrition when his mother brought him to the hospital for tests on Sept. 10. The child weighed about 11 lbs., little more than what a newborn baby would weigh.
After the diagnosis, the baby and his mother went missing.
The man told CTV Toronto in an interview at the hospital on Sunday that doctors were wrong by diagnosing the baby with malnutrition. He said the child merely has a skin condition.
The couple said they did not want any intrusive treatment by doctors because of religious reasons.
"We are Moorish-Americans," said the man. "That's who we are. We have a right to do what we want with our offspring."
However, just before 1 p.m., police stepped up their presence at the hospital, Staff Sgt. Jay Frosch told CTV.ca.
Police negotiators with the Emergency Task Force attended the scene to try and "quickly resolve the situation."
The parents were arrested without incident, said Frosch.
Police arrived on the scene since about 10:30 a.m., Frosch said. Doctors were able to briefly inspect the child but the man continued to hold on to the child tightly and refused to let him go for further tests.
Frosch said he didn't know the condition of the baby's health.
"All I can say is that the baby is in the best place in the hands of the hospital," he said.
The couple can't be publicly named to protect the identity of the child.

I applaud the budget, even though Health Care and education may stay unscathed. Sadly this cannot last and I worry to later this year where cuts will become enviable. If anything, this provides the Wildrose Alliance plenty of ammo when an election is called.
