In her first interview with the media since being picked as Republican John McCain's running mate, Sarah Palin said that Georgia should join NATO and war might be necessary if Russia invaded the country again.
In the excerpts from the first of three interviews with ABC News' Charlie Gibson, Palin advocated the inclusion of Georgia and Ukraine into NATO.
When asked if the U.S. would go to war if Russia again if it attacked Georgia, the Alaska governor said: ""Perhaps so. I mean, that is the agreement when you are a NATO ally, is if another country is attacked, you're going to be expected to be called upon and help.
"And we've got to keep an eye on Russia. For Russia to have exerted such pressure in terms of invading a smaller democratic country, unprovoked, is unacceptable."
On other questions of foreign policy and security, Palin toed the Republican line.
She was hawkish on the defence of Israel saying, "I don't think we should second guess the measures that Israel has to take to defend themselves and for their security."
Palin did not provide a straight answer when asked if the U.S. should be able to go into Pakistan to pursue terrorists along the Afghanistan border.
"Is that a yes?" Gibson asked her. "That you think we have the right to go across the border with or without the approval of the Pakistani government, to go after terrorists who are in the Waziristan area?"
Palin responded saying: "I believe that America has to exercise all options in order to stop the terrorists who are hell bent on destroying America and our allies. We have got to have all options out there on the table."
However, her running mate McCain said in July that he would not chase even Osama bin Laden into Pakistan because it's a sovereign nation.
In the interview, Palin seems to not understand a question about whether she supports the Bush doctrine, and Gibson explains the doctrine to her. The doctrine, which states the U.S. has the right to a pre-emptive strike against a nation if it thinks it may attack it, is considered one of the keys to the White House's foreign policy.
Defends experience
Palin, who has yet to serve two years as governor and used to be mayor of a town of 7,000, said she didn't hesitate when asked by McCain to be his vice-presidential nominee.
"I answered him 'Yes' because I have the confidence in that readiness and knowing that you can't blink, you have to be wired in a way of being so committed to the mission, the mission that we're on, reform of this country and victory in the war."
"You can't blink. So I didn't blink then even when asked to run as his running mate," Palin, 44, said.
Gibson also questioned Palin about a quote she previously made in an Alaskan church saying, "Our national leaders are sending U.S. soldiers on a task that is from God" and asked if she thought the U.S. was fighting a holy war.
Palin said she was referring to an Abraham Lincoln quote and said," I would never presume to know God's will or to speak God's words."
Then when asked about her son Track, who is going to Iraq, was on a mission from God, she said she didn't know.
"I don't know if the task is from God, Charlie," Palin said.
Palin hiding from questions
Since her Sept. 3 speech at the Republican convention, Palin has not given an interview until the ABC interview and has been working with a number of Bush White House aides on getting her up to speed on foreign and national policy.
The introduction of Palin to the Republican ticket rocketed McCain into a slight lead or dead heat in national polls over Democratic nominee Barack Obama.
Palin has so far not faced the questions raised shortly after her nomination. She has repeatedly said she shut down the infamous "Bridge to Nowhere," when in fact she was originally a supporter of it.
She has promoted herself as a governor against earmark projects, but her record does not indicate that.
Palin is also under investigation by an Alaskan ethics committee for her firing of the state's public safety commissioner for allegedly not bowing to her demands to fire her brother-in-law.
Palin has also been quiet while campaigning, and has stuck basically to the same speech she gave at the convention.
Reporters have been told by the McCain campaign that all Palin flights are to be off the record, which some reporters have objected to.
There is no word when Palin will do more interviews.
McCain campaign manager Rick Davis told reporters that Palin will"agree to an interview when we think it's time and when she feels comfortable doing it."

I applaud the budget, even though Health Care and education may stay unscathed. Sadly this cannot last and I worry to later this year where cuts will become enviable. If anything, this provides the Wildrose Alliance plenty of ammo when an election is called.

1) Russia launched an unprovoked attack on Georgia.
- this is a BLATANT LIE, it is public knowledge that the Georgians attacked South Ossetia and began bombing Tsinkhali in an preemptive unprovoked strike, having in fact bombed the main hospital in the city.
2) War with Russia is an option on the table.
- is Palin diluted or just ignorant beyong comprehension? Have we not forgotten Sarah, that Russia is armed with roughly 5000 nuclear warheads?
It pains me to no end to hear all of this Russia bashing, when in fact Russia is not in anyway an aggressor. In fact, Russia had a duty ensure the peace in the region of South Ossetia, and was following the directive of a UN resolution to restore the peace and ensure the safety of Ossetians (most of whom have Russian citizenship). Also take into account the US's new missile defense system which essentially boxes in the Russians in the west, you begin to understand why the Russians could get upset.
Palin's comments regarding Russia are entirely unfounded and with regards to her proposition on war, is she attempting usher in a dreaded nuclear showdown with the Russians???

Does she realize Russia has cable? I don't think they would take to kindly to knowing what's on deck if the republicans get in.
It seems like their campaign is based solely on war, I wouldn't mind seeing her stock portfolio, wouldn't be surprised to see a couple of DoD suppliers in there somewhere...

No more Republicans please. I'm tired of the threats and complete lack of diplomacy and negotiating skills. There is another approach...you don't always have to beat someone over the head or threaten them to get where you need to be. Sometimes you cannot avoid it, but these clowns always start from that point. Enough already.

The difference between Obama and Palin is that although she has executive experience, it is on the state level. She has no credentials nationally, and certainly none internationally.
In contrast, although Obama hasn't had any executive experience, he is well versed in both national and international politics and issues. With Biden supporting him, he can be a truly effective leader in getting America back on track after the Republicans' disastrous 8 years of destroying America's economy, civil liberties, and international reputation.
Obama is truly offering the Americans hope. My fear is that if he isn't elected, not only is their economy is trouble, so is their democracy. And that could have grave repercussions for Canadians as well.

Its important to have your facts straight and maybe even know what you're talking about, this may help you be less terrified.
1. The comments specifically mention Georgia as a NATO member. Her answer is the same one your leader and every other NATO leader will give. NATO is a 'mutual defense pact', signatories are obligated to defend each other from foreign attack.
2. The book-banning is bull, go to the notoriously neutral Factcheck.org for proof.
3. She does not want evolution removed from schools and never even hinted as much, she did suggest it be debated in schools. Of course most high schools and colleges regularly debate it, just like death penalty, religion, and other things. This is usually considered a good thing for students to do, ya know, intelligent debate, the cornerstone of democracy?

I think the difficulty with interviews like this is that it's hard to distinguish between thorough preparation on talking points vs. actual foreign policy expertise.
Another good question is how important, or how easy to come by, "good judgement" actually is. This is a woman with very little (substantive) governing/legislative experience, and she could be the leader of the free world very quickly if anything were to happen to 72 year old John McCain.

“Porky” Palin – hey, as it turns out, that pig does wear lipstick….wow!!!
After McCain said earlier this year that he won't "spend $3 million of your tax dollars to study the DNA of bears in Montana," Politico reports that as governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin requested millions of dollars to study the DNA of harbor seals, among other things (including research on the mating habits of crabs.) Intelligent people everywhere are both amused and appalled that Palin, who claims she is conservative when it comes to earmarks, would request federal money for a project nearly identical to one that McCain has mocked. The earmark is yet another example of how McCain and Palin are "hypocrites and liars."
http://www.mydd.com/story/2008/9/11/02449/9021
At the end of the clip, John McCain promises that he'll make the names of wasteful government spenders "famous."
Apparently, he kept his pledge: he picked one of them to be his veep.
“We’re not going to spend $3 million of your tax dollars to study the DNA of bears in Montana,” McCain has said during this year’s campaign, referring to a study he’s mocked for years of whether grizzlies need to keep their status as an endangered species.
Palin, meanwhile, has requested $3.2 million to be spent in part researching the “genetics of harbor seals,”
"Senator McCain said Governor Palin ‘learned that earmarks are bad’, but in 2008 alone Gov. Palin requested $256 million in earmarks for Alaska, and her state received more earmarks per person that any other state," said spokesman Tommy Vietor. "The fact is that Governor Palin isn’t just good at getting pork projects, she’s one of the most successful pork barrel politicians in history."

First and foremost, Palin has not banned any books, those who say so, please post up proof. As well as the creationism angle, she hasn't denied it to the schools, nor has she made it mandatory.
As for the Russian comments, those who choose to speak should really research what they are saying.
This is the emergence of the real world order, after the collapse of the former USSR , Russia's military has been largely unorganized. This action in Georgia changed all that. The Russians are here to stay, and unfortunately as much as the US wants to head them off at the pass, they cannot unless they wish to compromise what they have done in the middle east. As well, the Russian attack into South Ossetia was skilled and co-ordinated as a main assault, not as a reaction to Georgian aggression into the small state. The Russians had their ducks in a row, all they needed was a trigger which the Georgians unwittingly gave them.
While i agree with Palin for VP, she really shouldn't write checks that the US cannot cash.

Unlike Obama, Palin has the strength of character to deal with Putin and Ahmadinejad firmly by spelling out the options clearly.
Character - that is the key ingredient in the leadership mix nobody talks about yet. Does Obama have the character to stand up to Putin or Ahmadinejad? I doubt it. McCain has already proven his stuff, and Palin is demonstrating she too has what it takes.

Those saying she wanted to ban books, wanted creationism in schools, that she cut funds to special needs children and other rumors should refer to factcheck.org, a non-partisan group that has de-bunked various spurious claims about both Obama and McCain. Do your homework before running your e-mouths!
CTV bias can only be noted in the five or six extra items added to the end of this article to discredit her. Stick to actual news item and report what she said. Every indication is that she is a fiscal reformer in Alaska but a very social conservative who does not hide it. I disagree with her on that, but Obama is far less experienced than she.

So? she is a politician. All politicians fit those descriptions that some wish to limit to Palin alone. What about Putin? Isn't he scary? He actually STARTED a war, using the same reasons as Hitler did in 1938 (Czechoslavakia) and 1939 (Poland) to invade a neighboring country.
Reading some of these posts is scary in its own right: challenging the right of a candidate for office in a friendly democracy to express the opinions of her party and herself. How hypocritical is that? How ARROGANT is that?
Suggestion: engage brain before posting.

If you think that Russian (Putin) did not orchestrate the entire Georgian crisis/conflict. I have a bridge in Manhattan I own that I'd like to sell you.
The Russians had been financing and prodding the Ossetian and Abkhazian seperatists (who are largely transplanted ethnic Russians) for months to force Sakashvilli into acting. He did and this gave the Russians the excuse to act.
The Russians used this as an opportunity to scare other former Soviet Republics from getting to cosy with the west. Primarily Ukraine.
Its about energy. Russia has been using energy as a weapon to brow beat Europe. Georgia was a road block in this effort because of a pipeline that circumvented Russian territory.
Notice how the Russians have quietly backed down now that the US Navy has been docking in Georgia and delivering aid.

So what's wrong with voting in a strong leader who has traditional Christian values which built Canada and who is not afraid of the Russians, Taliban or Al Qaeda.
These people are afraid of Palin alright. Just like the Russians, Al Qaeda and Taliban who are afraid of NATO. When someone is afraid of something, they attack them in words and in deeds, and try to persuade others to do the same.
The US never said anything about attacking Russia, they only insisted that Russia respect Georgia's borders. As for the Taliban and Al Qaeda, I suppose some wacky "Canadians" who comment here insist it was a CIA plot and that Bush staged the 9/11 attack along with the bombing of the WTC during Clinton's presidency.
Your words paint a very clear picture of who you are.

while what she said was not terribly bright the fact of the matter is every country and every alliance creates scenarios to anticipate and respond to a potential crisis
Did you know that during the 1920s both the U.S. and Great Britain had created military plans in the event of war with each other. Think about that and put it in context I'm not so sure it's as inflammatory as it sounds..any country, Canada included, makes contingency plans as ascenine as the scenario maybe countries still do it..
Further, Russia isn't as much the victim as it may look to be...Russia has recently begun to flex it's reinvigorated military muscle don't assume that Russia is totally innocent here. The fact this comes on the heels of Russian bombers flying into NATO airspace, modernizing their nuclear deterrent, naval exercises...just something to keep in mind

As for members of an alliance coming to another member's aid, in international law no ally is obligated to provide military aid. Lip service "support" is enough. By the way, the last time that alliance members piled on to aid their allies we got WWI and about 40 million dead. This is the kind of "thinking" that we get from our peace-loving Chritian friends.

It wasn't so much Russia flexing reinvigorated military muscle as seizing and opportunity. Russian troops in Georgia were using primarily 1970s vintage equipment which was quite sufficient to overwhelm a very small Georgian Army.
Russian quite wisely keeps its best equipment on the Chinese border. Its only a matter of time before salivating Chinese eyes look towards Siberia and its riches.
The Georgian episode was a sideshow designed to put a scare into former eastern european vasals of the Soviet Union.
Time will tell if it worked.

And she actually thinks war with Russia is an OPTION? To do what? End the world? Does she not think a war with Russia would result in a nuclear catastrophe? What planet is she from? She can hardly put two coherent and intelligent thoughts together in the same paragraph. First she says she hopes there is not another "cold war" with the Russians,- but then she does a bizarre 360 degree turnaround and even contradicts herself, saying she would not rule out "war with Russia". Just by saying that, she has already escalated the chances of at least a cold war. The US does not need a hawk of that sort. Just like McCain criticizes Obama for being "not ready to lead", right back at you, Sarah ! It has been that said McCain likes to "roll the dice" and take chances...and in this case I think he rolled snake-eyes, and because war with Russia would be nuclear, it will be the planet that is snake-bit. Obama and Biden are by far a safer option than McCain and this woman. She reminds me of a deer blinded by headlights, - she has no idea of what to do in such an important situation.

Bush....Oil man!
Cheney....Oil man!
These 2 have made more money off of the Iraq war than most of us will see in our lifetime.
Here is a quote from a story I read.....
Dick Cheney used to be CEO of Halliburton Corporation.
“Halliburton has already raked in more than $20 billion from the Bush-Cheney Administration for work in Iraq, and they were awarded some of the first Katrina contracts," Lautenberg said in a statement. "It is unseemly for the Vice President to continue to benefit from this company at the same time his Administration funnels billions of dollars to it. The Vice President should sever his financial ties to Halliburton once and for all.”
Cheney continues to hold 433,333 Halliburton stock options worth over $8,000,000!
Also Haliburton has no bid contracts guarantee they get the contract.
UGH!!! Dick Cheney is rolling in the war money!
Palin....Oil woman! Biggest oil state in the USA!
We need to change our country to be less dependent on OIL. That is a fact!
Electing Palin would be another WAR monger out to make money off of more wars!

The rest of us who are educated actually understand what's happened in Georgia from the RUSSIAN point of view.
This chick is absolutely crazy. If the United States went to war with Russian, it would be the long awaited third world war and nucleaur holocaust.
Now, I understand that seems like a really NEAT proposition because, as humans, we love to see the extraordinary (I really don't need to provide examples - do I?)
But, this is a SERIOUS SERIOUS matter.
If the Republicans get in and they have that type of attitude, we will be flirting with nuclear war.
You know what... you have to be diplomatic and negotiate in this world. You think you're STRONG just putting your foot down and saying my way or the highway... You think it's doing the HARD choice?
Think again... from the dawn of time, MEN want to FIGHT.. it's part of our DNA. But it takes a LOT MORE BALLS and STRENGHT to negotiate and talk it out then go in with guns blazing like those brainwashing U.S. commercials show.
Unfortunately, there's a lot of people out there who see negotiation and talk as WEAK when it's the exact opposite.
Let women run the world..... they can call on the men if there's true valid fight or war worth fighting.
For crying out loud..

Ummm...Georgia didn't attack South Ossetia...It's part of Georgia. The rebels there are technically Georgians, within Georgian territory.
And Palin talked of Russian invading a DEMOCRACY, not a malevolent dictatorship such as Iraq was..."
Hey, lets not let facts cloud the argument.

America can't afford another war as it's already in debt and the lost is mounting by the day!

JD - the people who listen to Palin are the people who think like she does. Unfortunately, the US has approximately 55 MILLION voting citizens just as ill-informed and willing to twist facts to suit their own purposes. We saw this in the last election when they re-elected George Dubya (Mr. "Weapons-of-Mass-Destruction" himself). Scarey to think, but there is actually a good chance McCain/Palin could be elected.
Here's hoping the rest of America can rally their silent majority to the polls come election day and keep this pair far far away from that red button.

Geez, if that's the only reason she's 'qualified' about speaking of foreign relations, then the guys on Deadliest Catch must be even more knowledgable about Russia, because they're even closer to Russia than Palin! Give me a break.
