Training for the win: What do the Top 5 eat for breakfast?

Olympic Gold medalist and world record-breaking U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps has revealed what he eats in order to have enough energy for training.

The hefty breakfast consists of three fried-egg sandwiches, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, fried onions and mayonnaise, an omelette, a bowl of grits, and three slices of French toast with powdered sugar, all washed down with three chocolate chip pancakes.

And with a carbohydrate-heavy meal of pasta or pizza for dinner, Phelps said he consumes up to 10,000 calories a day (!)

Phelps has already won six medals at the Beijing Olympics so he must be doing something right.

It got us wondering whether our Canadian Idol competitors eat a similar kind of breakfast to train for the win.

Mitch MacDonald: A piece of fruit and a glass of orange juice or apple juice

"I've never been much of a breakfast guy to be honest ... usually the mornings are pretty slow, I'm trying to get going and then I'm good and hungry for lunch," said Mitch.

Mookie Morris: A bagel and chocolate milk

"I don't even get time to eat breakfast really," said Mookie. "I think my secret is chocolate milk in the morning."

Earl Stevenson: A home-made smoothie with bananas, blackberries, strawberries, orange juice, ice cream and milk

"I just like it because it fills you up and it's a good treat," said Earl.

Theo Tams: Two bottles of Gatorade or Cheez Whiz on crackers or toast

"I don't really eat breakfast and ever since I've been on this show I'm in a constant state of nervousness and my stomach does not cooperate in the morning," said Theo with a laugh. "But if I do eat in the morning I'll have (one of those two things)."

Drew Wright: A bowl of cereal, an apple, a banana or maybe a yogurt

"Sometimes in the morning I don't really feel like eating but if I have breakfast (it will be one of those things), not all of them," said Drew.
