The animal rights group PETA has posted an ad on its blog website comparing the killing and beheading of 22-year-old Tim McLean to the slaughter of animals for human consumption.

PETA planned to run the ad in the Portage Daily Graphic, a newspaper in the Manitoba town 20 kilometres away from where the shocking murder took place.

The imageless ad reads: "Manitoba. An innocent young victim's throat is cut . . . His struggles and cries are ignored. The man with the knife shows no emotion . . . The victim is slaughtered and his head cut of . . . His flesh is eaten. It still goes on!"

The newspaper's website says that the paper has refused to carry the ad.

PETA defended the ad in a press release on its website.

"Like human victims, animals in slaughterhouses experience terror when they are attacked by a knife-wielding assailant," PETA's Lindsay Rajt said in the release. "We are challenging everyone who is rightly horrified by this crime to look into their hearts and consider leaving violence off their dinner plates."

Another blog post on the PETA website says: "While it isn't every day that a human is violently attacked and eaten by another human, it's worth noting that it is the norm for many people not to give any thought to the fact that restaurants are serving flesh that comes from innocents who were minding their own business before someone came after them with a knife. How amazingly and conveniently compartmentalized the human mind is..."

McLean was killed last Wednesday after being stabbed repeatedly on a greyhound bus by a complete stranger. He was then beheaded and according to reports from the scene, his attacker committed acts of cannibalism.

Vinci Li, 40, has been charged with second-degree murder in the slaying of McLean. A psychiatric evaluation has been ordered for Li.

PETA-Lets cheer on beheading and eating the brains of a "HUMAN BEING" because animals are more important that humans. The misplaced ideals of placing animals equal to or ahead of humans is disgusting. Why is PETA not outspoken about Rawanda or Darfur? Because PETA is a FARCE who hides its face in the sheets thinking that animal rights TRUMP human rights.
SHAME PETA SHAME.

How typical of extremists: they take the tragedy of a human loss and turn it into a political tool.

There is NO comparison between this senseless act and what PETA stands for.

Please, how can someone compare a human life to a chicken's? They're not even close.

These people are completely and utterly off the deep end. While I respect their right to go against forty thousand years of human evolution (omnivorous, ever hear of it?) and their right to hold any beliefs they want in our society, I draw the line when a group such as this tries to capitalize on a gruesome and heinous murder to try to win points with the public. There is no "oh my gosh, these people are right moment" when someone their poorly thought out ad, only the collective shocked gasp that the rest of us let out the moment before we affirm our earlier conclusion that these people are crazy.

Pamela,
Get your crazies at Peta to retract this absurd notion.
Give your head a shake. Animals for consumption hardly compare to this tragedy.

umm... ok? your comparing humans to animals. humans are created in the image of God. animals are a gift to humans either for beauty or food. this is a travesty to compare this to animal slaughter..its tantamount to hate literature i say.

I find it terrible and very distuburbing when a animal righs group compare an act by a very disturbed man to to cruelty to animals. THERE IS NO CONNECTION.Think of the family. What are they going through . What is our society coming to. and by the way i do support treating animals with diginity and respect and this act doesn't even compare. we need the death penalty re-ensatated. crazy isn't even a defence.

Some may find Peta's comparison tasteless. But actually it's not. We live in a society where people can casually eat their meat without thinking about the fact that it too was once an innocent animal that was beheaded, and its flesh cut up, and distributed to their plate---in most cases conveniently prepared to not look like it came from an animal. Acceptance of violence begets violence.

Well now, PETA has finally shown themselves for exactly what they are....sick
....sick...sick !!!
Their heads are buried so deeply in their beliefs that they have no way of stepping outside of their way of "thinking" to understand that there is a huge DIFFERENCE between the murder of a human being and slaughtering animals for food!!!

This proves the disgracefulness of people. Until people stop treating animals like poeple, they will treat people like animals.
I cannot believe this story so much that I had to write in. I have a pet. She even talks- a blue fronted maccaw-but she is an animal.
Recently I was asked to perform at a rally for raising money to challenge Canada's animal laws- to make them considered companions rather than Property as they are today. I had to tell the person=- I like my bird but if I was starving I'd eat her. Now that may be a little extreme- as we live in a country where anyone can get free food, however my point is this- Animals are not people. People make bad desicions yes- but most people are genuinly compassionate I truely beleive. Of course with the greed in the world - 1 billion are obese whilest 1 billion are starving. Stop treating animals like people, treat people like human beings for a change.
peta deserves to be black listed forever from any canadian events promoting any kind of tolerence for animal welfare-because this proves they are not in any way intelligent as the animals they try apparently to protect. Let pamala Andreson be their spokesperson- perfect fit-Ill eat KFC any day- at least their breasts are real.

I'm puzzled as to how they came up with that equation. What else can one conclude other than it is simply another asinine statement from a bunch of wingnut radicals. Taking it that far makes PETA look like nothing better than sick bastards.

PETA is an unusual and unethical group. Morals to the wind.

PETA should be sued and have all media coverage revoked.

PETA is not good for anything.

PETA has desicrated McLean's existence.

Wow, this is in very poor taste. Not only did PETA not consider the family and friends of the victim when this drivel was released, but another member actually defended it. It is very unfortunate that a Canadian (Pamela Anderson) is probably their most famous spokes person. Using a brutal murder as a means of getting attention for their cause is completely classless and reinforces what most people think of these organizations. I hope that donors to this intentionally rude and calous organization remember this "ad" the next time that they are canvassed for money. I also hope that since these remarks were intentionally made to make a cynical comparison to a matter before the courts that the government considers the removal of PETA's charetable organization status (if it has one I haven't checked).

PETA needs a new PR director. On the plus side, this shows Canadians how out of line PETA's thoughts are.

Yeah, they're exactly the same thing. And the Soviets are controlling the weather in North America.

These folks are right up there with the fundies who blame every natural disaster and economic calamity on gays and feminists. Two sides of the same coin...

Even for the most extreme animal-rights activists, this is too far. Hopefully, saner thoughts will prevail, and PETA will realize they have made a terrible error in judgment by creating this ad. Absolutely disgusting.

I sincerely hope that the family of this young man sues them for everything. This is the most disgusting thing I have read on the net. To simply compare this trajedy to the use of animals for food is criminal. Take this "peta" to every board, court, and public forum for judgement. Absolutely disgusting!!!! PETA should be abolished for this. My heart goes out to the family and friends of this young man.

This is a new low, even for PETA. I can't imagine a more disgusting marketing ploy. Shame on anyone who was involved with this ad campaign. Did you really think that you would win people over with this? All it does is further victimize the family of the victim, and trivialize the murder of this young man. How dare you try to spin this horrible event for your own twisted agenda! Anyone who had anything to do with this campaign can go right ahead and burn in hell!

The events that occurred in Manitoba were horrible. I think it's extremely insensitive and inconsiderate for an organization to compare these tragic events to something that they are trying to bring awareness of. There are a lot better avenues to draw attention to their issues and I am disgusted at their comparisons. There are many individuals that are mourning a loss of an individual and others should not be taking advantage of this situation to address their own agenda.

I hope that some supporters will now finally see what a bunch of dumb lunatics Peta has become, and stop funding them.
I also hope the media throughout the world jumps on this and shows this disgraceful disrespect for human life!

PETA: Shame on you.

Tim McLean's family and friends were victimized when Tim was tragically murdered. They were victimized again, repeatedly, by media reports. Actions such as these serve to pour even more salt into their raw, bleeding wounds.

There is absolutely no justification for this type of advertising.

I am a firm supporter of animal rights; I cannot support PETA after this incident.

What's next?

Will PETA label the tiger a BAD animal for being a predator?

Come on! Get real. Like it or most animals are part of the food chain. It's what keeps an ecosystem in balance.

Comparing the food chain to this horrible situation is ridiculous. I'll repeat an earlier comment...Shame on you, PETA!

When hundreds die in a stampede in India or thousands die in Iraq, there is not as much outrage as we see here in these postings. The majority of posters have no relation to the victim or even to his province. But pathetically, the manner of his death seems to strike more sympathy. Death is death (no matter your country or skin color). If you can learn to treat animals better, maybe you'll learn to care for each and every member of humanity.

PETA has been continuously working toward losing credibility with the general public. This is just another example. I hope everyone can relax enough about this to do the right thing and laugh at PETA and their absurdity.

How much more ignorant, disrespectful and VILE can the PETA possibly be? It's easy to claim a "higher" common good when you don't have to face the consequences of your actions in person. In Canada if anyone attacks an animal the way this young man was attacked, they would face the consequences. Here we walk the walk when we talk the talk. PETA, IMHO, blows alot of hot air and uses sensationalistic journalism... to what end? Stop trying to profit from the unfortunate circumstances of others PETA. Put your money where it should be. Proper education and monitoring. I also expect to see an apology from your organization to the family and all people affected by Tim Mclean's murder. Anything less would be uncivilized. And as you are supposed to advocate fair and HUMANE treatment, perhaps it's time you figured out it applies to people too, not just animals.

How sad to think that some equate a human life with that of an animal. People were created in the image of God, animals were not.
I am sorry that the family had to see this. I hope they know there are still Canadians that put a high value on human life.
