Sebastian Pigott can't say he's shocked.
After being in the Bottom 3 the previous two weeks, the 25-year-old singer, actor and writer from Toronto, Ont., pretty much figured he'd be the next to leave Canadian Idol.
"Yeah, I was expecting it," said Sebastian, shortly after his elimination. "(But) I want to make sure that all the people who've been voting for me and supporting me know how thankful I am because it's been such a tremendous ride, especially the couple of weeks of the Top 10 there where I was getting beat up by the judges and the support from everybody was awesome and I'm so glad they kept me around because that's the note I wanted to go out on."
He was actually surprised he didn't go the week before, after the less than favourable comments he received from the Canadian Idol judges. The show's youngest competitor, Katherine St-Laurent from Otterburn Park, Que., was voted off instead.
Sebastian received much better comments this week for his rousing performance of Little Richard's "Lucille" on "Unplugged" week, with Farley Flex welcoming him back to the music business and Sass Jordan saying it was the best thing he'd done in a long time. He had been previously praised for his performance style and Flex even called him the first "sex symbol" the show has ever had.
"I don't think they were saying I'd improved but rather I recovered because I did. I'd peaked pretty early and gave what they considered a couple subpar performances," said Sebastian.
But it still wasn't enough. And although Sebastian may have been anticipating the outcome, it doesn't mean he wanted to leave Canadian Idol.
"Of course I'm disappointed," said Sebastian, who is still glad he got to experience the Top 10, even if it was without his older brother Oliver.
The two made Canadian Idol history by being the first siblings to make it to the Top 24. When Oliver failed to make the Top 10 and was voted off Top 16, Sebastian said it was a bittersweet victory.
"I'm glad I did continue on. I strongly considered dropping out after my brother got booted and that took the wind out of my sails and I think probably contributed to my subpar performances for a couple weeks there but it's another one of those challenges. This whole experience has been a series of challenges and that was one of them to be able to re-centre myself, which is another reason I'm thrilled I was able to continue through 'til this week because I feel like I really came out of it and found myself again."
Sebastian said the best part of the whole Idol experience, in fact, has been working with his brother.
"It had been years, I think about five years, since he and I had played music in any serious way together and so this competition very literally brought us back together in that respect, not that we were estranged or anything, but brought us back together creatively. That was the experience of the lifetime, was being able to do that with him at this point."
Sebastian hopes to continue this collaboration with his brother by doing some touring, as well as a record.
"I'd like to ride this momentum and go out and meet the people who liked what we were doing and play music for them, and keep having fun and keep doing stuff that inspires me and scares me and excites me, wherever that winding crazy road takes me, I'll be there. As David Bowie said very eloquently I don't know what's next, but I guarantee it's not boring."
