Chinese authorities aired a chilling interview on television with the man police say killed a 22-year-old B.C. model working in Shanghai.

The government-run news show Dongfang 110 broadcasted the interview with 18-year-old Chen Jun, a migrant worker from Anhui province who is charged in Diana O'Brien's murder.

In the interview, which appears to be a police video, Jun says he was out of money and that he broke into the woman's apartment at random.

He says he grabbed a laptop and when he turned to leave, O'Brien surprised him and hit him.

Police then say Jun stabbed her with a foldable knife before she escaped to the stairs, where he attacked her again.

The television program showed a trail of blood leading from the model's apartment to the stairwell.

Surveillance video shows a man leaving the apartment before midnight on a bicycle, but then returning to the apartment. The man is then seen leaving again but with a bag.

Police say Jun wanted the laptop and returned to get it. He then sold it to finance his escape, police allege.

Jun was arrested four days after the murder and police say he had O'Brien's camera, some of her jewelry and Canadian cash on him.

O'Brien, of Salt Spring Island, B.C., was found dead on July 7 in the staircase of the Shanghai building where she was temporarily residing. O'Brien was in Shanghai on a contract with China's JH Model Agency.

She had told friends that she was unhappy in the country and was cutting her contract short to come back to Canada.

A memorial was held for O'Brien on Sunday in B.C.
