The illustration on the issue that hits newsstands Monday, titled "The Politics of Fear" and drawn by Barry Blitt, depicts Barack Obama wearing traditional Muslim garb -- sandals, robe and turban -- and his wife, Michelle -- dressed in camouflage, combat boots and an assault rifle strapped over her shoulder -- standing in the Oval Office.
The couple is bumping fists in front of a fireplace in which an American flag is burning. Over the mantel hangs a portrait of Osama bin Laden.
"The New Yorker may think, as one of their staff explained to us, that their cover is a satirical lampoon of the caricature Senator Obama's right-wing critics have tried to create," said Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton.
"But most readers will see it as tasteless and offensive. And we agree."
In a statement Monday, the magazine said the cover "combines a number of fantastical images about the Obamas and shows them for the obvious distortions they are."
"The burning flag, the nationalist-radical and Islamic outfits, the fist-bump, the portrait on the wall? All of them echo one attack or another. Satire is part of what we do, and it is meant to bring things out into the open, to hold up a mirror to prejudice, the hateful, and the absurd. And that's the spirit of this cover," the New Yorker statement said.
The statement also pointed to the two articles on Obama contained inside the magazine, calling them "very serious."
Republican John McCain's campaign spokesman, Tucker Bonds, agreed that the cover was "tasteless and offensive."
Already the cover was generating controversy on the Internet.
The Huffington Post, a left-leaning blog, said: "Anyone who's tried to paint Obama as a Muslim, anyone who's tried to portray Michelle as angry or a secret revolutionary out to get Whitey, anyone who has questioned their patriotism -- well, here's your image."

I applaud the budget, even though Health Care and education may stay unscathed. Sadly this cannot last and I worry to later this year where cuts will become enviable. If anything, this provides the Wildrose Alliance plenty of ammo when an election is called.

I suspect that the most Americans do not get past the front page of the New Yorker and the rednecks will be purchasing this issue and tearing off and framing the front page as an example and proof that Obama is indeed a Muslim.

The underlying truth is Barack has a fear mongering, hatred filled demographic who see a delusional connection between two different men who share the name Obama.

Who is the other man named Obama?
Maybe the fact that his middle name is Hussein would foster some "dilusional connections", but as far as I know Obama doesn't strike any fear in my mind.

For the record, I agree that rednecks in the U.S. will use The New Yorker's cover cartoon as "proof" that Barack Obama is a "Muslim". But it's not the magazine's fault that people less sophisticated than their readers don't "get" the satire. The cartoon may be distasteful to some. But, like us, Americans do live in a democracy and have freedom of speech and opinion. For that we must always be grateful.

Rightly or wrongly Obama is vunerable in this area and the photo of him in Moslim dress while in Africa can be used against him, as can the fact he attended a medressa (Islamic religious school) in Indonesia.
I'm not sayig it is right, but any savvy media guy could easily put together a successful series of ads like the Long Boat crew ads that brought down Kerry.

The New Yorker touched a nerve that makes me wonder if there is some plausibility to the scenario.
The cover is humour and an expression of a viewpoint.
I would have felt more comfortable if the Obama folks said,"Ha,ha, that's rich. Obama wants an autographed artist's copy for the Oval Office."

The New Yorker, is a respected magazine not a "Mad" clone or upscale version of it.
The articles in the magazine have been rendered redundant by the cover even if there was a decent message to them. Nice slam on the campaign trail to the democrats. Makes you wonder if GOPS run the New Yorker?

It seems they feel they can not win on their philosophy so they will create a philosophy for the other side. They do not feel they need to portray an accurate image of the other side as they need to show an image that is weaker than their own.
Expect the same garbage in the next Canadian election.. I feel that an politician or party that initiates the negative campaign process is fundemental dishonest and not a politician I wish to represent me. On principal any party that starts a negative ad campaign does not get my vote.

I think this was meant as satire but Obama has problems with middle class americans who are not as up to date and may see this as a confirmation of their fears.
people are ignorant.

i see very different points- of-view in each of your comments, but ultimately why does it matter if Obama is a Muslim or not. People remember that we should not judge people based on race or religion, base it on the person. And since when has being Muslim been offensive? Do people not learn from history, because as we all know history is doomed to repeat itself, and let that not happen..again.
'Political Correctness' is repressive and evil

While the cartoon is indeed in very bad taste and will be offensive to some, if it were published in Canada our wacked out leftist Darwinian ideologues who run the Human Rights Commissions wouldn't be able to hand out the indictments fast enough... in the name of "Political Correctness". GARBAGE!!
Free speech is dead in Canada and Canadians should be aware the Canadian Human Rights Commissions are responsible.
Time to take back our country so we can have the right to free speech even if it steps on a few toes now and again.
Smear culture in Canada too, eh

We have our own fanatical right wing up here who utilize attack cartoons and war-on-terror "You're with us or you're with the enemy" smear tactics on their opponents, albeit without the satirical jab against the culture of smearing that the New Yorker is obviously taking with that cartoon.
What dummies will confuse the New Yorker as saying about Obama is the essence of what our Conservative base utilizes as a cheap and tawdry political method.
"Taliban Jack" anyone? Who came up with that nickname, I wonder, and who relishes throwing it out into the discourse? It's your Canuck right wing base. Because according to them, of course, any politician who questions the methods of the Conservative base and offers a different approach is automatically in cahoots with the enemy, right?
Or critics of Canada's role in Afghanistan - anyone criticizing or questioning the Afghanistan mission is of course encouraging the enemy and endangering the troops. That right there is one of the most infuriating smears of all, and it's all straight verbatim out of Karl Rove's NeoCon dirty trick book.
Hopefully someday soon we'll drift away from this specific type of underhanded political smearing and deliberate linking of unrelated issues to squelch rational discussion of central issues. It's childish, it's underhanded, and the ongoing practice of it is doing us no good.

I think the flip flopping Sen.Obama who ran an very left wing primary to get rid of Sen.Clinton, before scrambling to the political right,is actually inviting some very close scrutiny.
I suppose we all know that politics is a very dirty business. But if you are running "against" traditional politics in favour of a more honest and transparent form of government, you really should actually conduct yourself accordingly.
He may be the best choice.I don't know. It's not our decision. But to me,the more I hear him,the more I'm inclined to see him as "just another politician".As phoney as the proverbial three dollar bill.

fears about 9/11 and muslims in general. His wife could also be a Black Panther symbol which would strike fear and loathing among the geriatric republicans. The burning of the flag in the fireplace was a nice touch - just to ensure every American is insulted. But why? I hope this does not sway Mr. Obama's presidential campaign as I believe our neighbors deserve to have change brought to them in every sense of the word.

Relax.
Perhaps it IS too deep for people to recognize this for what it is ... making FUN of the right-wingers by taking an amalgam of their claims and putting it all together in one image.
But just as with the Mohamed cartoons, even if its controversial, its freedom of the press, and they have the right to print it.
Obama should not get any special treatment from the media than McCain would.
So don't complain about it. Its just satire or parody, though it might be more than the average American can interpret.

These days, you flog your wares with sensationalism and controversy. It's the best/easiest way to stand out in the crowd and garner attention for your product, whatever it is.
Clearly, the rednecked folks and those who appreciate pictures more than words will make the negative association the piece was, supposedly, intended to mock.
Everybody has an agenda. Big shocker.
The Obama camp has no choice but to come out screaming. If they need assistance in this endeavor, they should consult the Bush camp: he's been made out to be a mentally-handicapped, murderous war monger who thrives on death and destruction for economic gain.
Take a pill, people. Countless Americans have been trying to paint Obama with the Kennedy brush. His presidential journey has been lined with flowers thus far. A little challenging kick in the pants is good for him.

Obama's campaign has been doing their best to make this election about race and prejudice, and are doing a damn good job of it.
The response by those who think they are sophisticates here in Canada, are a perfect example: "ooh ooh, I don't want to be a dumb Right Wing, red neck racist, therefore I find this cover offensive. I should throw my support behind Obama".
This is the kind of tactics that McCain talked about and said he would have no part of. Because he can't win against the race/prejudice card.
Don't be fooled people, you will see many many more race/prejudice stories pop up, (like the priests and reverends and so forth) that are put out to the media by Obama's camp.
The Democrats are playing to the fears of Americans, except in a different manner.
A vote for Mcain = racist
A vot for Obama = good citizen
Yah right. Some of us are not that stupid.

The cartoon the Barry created simple takes these slurs and slips from the media and puts it together in one image.
The fact that people are outraged is a good thing.
"How dare you say that about Obama He is a good man"
Barry didn't say these things he simple illustrated remark's made by others. Hopefully this gets people blood pressure up enough to stop and think about these things and hopefully connect the dots.
Awesome Cover.

Remember when the media decided a democratic congress would change the world? Look what happened there. Nothing. Its another do nothing congress, and since Obama has nothing new to offer, it will be a do nothing 4 years, which everyone will blame on Bush, but in 10-15 years, history will show how ridiculous it was to put Obama in, and how Bush probably saved America.

It would be even better if someone could draw a cartoon showing how inept both Obama and McCain are when it comes to economic policy. Neither one is looking to balance the budget and Obama's tax plan would raise income taxes up to 65% in some states. Sounds like the Jimmy Carter economic plan to me.

At least in the States he can say he is offended without the free press having to fear being hauled before a Human Rights Tribunal.
Can you imagine if this had happened in Canada?

I think this is in poor taste. Many people will understand the irony, but there are many who will not. And given that there is so much concern about terrorism in the US (as elsewhere) after 9/11, to portray a presidential candidate in this manner displays a lack of judgment, in my opinion.

Not that the cover is anywhere an accurate represenation of Sen. Obama but anytime the left gets offended because their illusionary world of socialist perfection is disturbed, they fly off on attacks.
As was mentioned several times, if this has been Bush, or McCain, or the Pope, or any other figure the left despises, it would have been a fair representation in what we know as the free press.
Good grief people. Chill out and stop trying to censor everything you don't agree with.

The first amendment gives the right of every citizen of the U.S. the freedom of press, religion and speech; so with that said this is a harmless drawing that an artist posted with an article and did not see any problem with it prior to it being printed.
For anyone to find this offensive should do a web search for any international newspaper or magazine and view what they have posted as political cartoons or drawings depecting the U.S. and then look at this image again and realize that this is not even comparable to the offensive and distorted images that are depected and spread throughout a muslim-based deverse region of the world.
