WASHINGTON — Barack Obama's campaign says a satirical New Yorker magazine cover showing the Democratic presidential candidate dressed as a Muslim and his wife as a terrorist is "tasteless and offensive."

The illustration on the issue that hits newsstands Monday, titled "The Politics of Fear" and drawn by Barry Blitt, depicts Barack Obama wearing traditional Muslim garb -- sandals, robe and turban -- and his wife, Michelle -- dressed in camouflage, combat boots and an assault rifle strapped over her shoulder -- standing in the Oval Office.

The couple is bumping fists in front of a fireplace in which an American flag is burning. Over the mantel hangs a portrait of Osama bin Laden.

"The New Yorker may think, as one of their staff explained to us, that their cover is a satirical lampoon of the caricature Senator Obama's right-wing critics have tried to create," said Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton.

"But most readers will see it as tasteless and offensive. And we agree."

In a statement Monday, the magazine said the cover "combines a number of fantastical images about the Obamas and shows them for the obvious distortions they are."

"The burning flag, the nationalist-radical and Islamic outfits, the fist-bump, the portrait on the wall? All of them echo one attack or another. Satire is part of what we do, and it is meant to bring things out into the open, to hold up a mirror to prejudice, the hateful, and the absurd. And that's the spirit of this cover," the New Yorker statement said.

The statement also pointed to the two articles on Obama contained inside the magazine, calling them "very serious."

Republican John McCain's campaign spokesman, Tucker Bonds, agreed that the cover was "tasteless and offensive."

Already the cover was generating controversy on the Internet.

The Huffington Post, a left-leaning blog, said: "Anyone who's tried to paint Obama as a Muslim, anyone who's tried to portray Michelle as angry or a secret revolutionary out to get Whitey, anyone who has questioned their patriotism -- well, here's your image."

Most people see the world a 'good' or 'bad'. One look at this cover and the first thought will be 'bad'. They will not take the time to think 'gee, what is this mag trying to tell me with this picture?'

They will think 'bad'. Rather rude of the mag, I think.

Satire is usually intended for those who are fairly sophisticated, knowledgeable and understanding of the issues. Remember, this is the same country which elected cowboy George “Dubya” Bush to two terms.

I suspect that the most Americans do not get past the front page of the New Yorker and the rednecks will be purchasing this issue and tearing off and framing the front page as an example and proof that Obama is indeed a Muslim.

Easy does it, its a cartoon from the New Yorker, an upscale clone of Mad Magazine.

The underlying truth is Barack has a fear mongering, hatred filled demographic who see a delusional connection between two different men who share the name Obama.

Don`t take the bait.

shame on the New Yorker you would think a mag as well known as that would have alot more discretion, someone will/should lose their job after a huge apology.

Leave the mud-slinging to the candidates. This is rediculous. At one time being part of the media meant having a certain amount of objectivity. Of course, this magazine caters to those who drive their luxury SUV's two blocks to the local Starbucks to indulge in a drink that is the same price-per-liter as gas.

Obama is a good man and weather you are on the left or right, nobody deserves this. Especially not his family.

Steve in Aylmer

Okay, so Obama and Osama are completely different, since when does fact become so important.

The underlying message in these posts is clear...For the well-read person, its funny and highlights the idiocy of the right-wing neo-cons, and that the American people should not be dupped into taking this at face value. Unfortunatley, as previously stated, most Americans will see it at face value, and 'take the bait'. They can't help it, they're programmed that way. The New Yorker should have taken that into consideration before publishing that cover. I dont' say its a tasteless piece, but very irresponsible.
With freedom (of the press), comes responsibility.

Hey Steve in Aylmer,

Who is the other man named Obama?

Maybe the fact that his middle name is Hussein would foster some "dilusional connections", but as far as I know Obama doesn't strike any fear in my mind.

What two men named "Obama"? There's a Democratic presidential candidate in the U.S. named "Obama" and there's a terrorist named "Osama". Those are two different names.
For the record, I agree that rednecks in the U.S. will use The New Yorker's cover cartoon as "proof" that Barack Obama is a "Muslim". But it's not the magazine's fault that people less sophisticated than their readers don't "get" the satire. The cartoon may be distasteful to some. But, like us, Americans do live in a democracy and have freedom of speech and opinion. For that we must always be grateful.

Lets hope the next issue cover does not include the Pope BBQing puppies or the Queen buying a vibrator from eBay. Looks like the Obama cover is meant to shock and make a name for someone. Its a career thing, I believe.

Yeah it's tasteless but it's a SATIRE just like alot of other tasteless satire the press has printed before....where was the outcry then? what happened to free speech, freedom of the press...all that stuff that Americans supposedly hold dear. They are making a point and using a satirical CARTOON to do it. I thought those freedoms were supposed to mean that you make not agree with what they say or how they phrase it, but they have the right to say it. Isn't this exactly the same kind of uproar the Muslim world had when the Danish printed cartoons..they were told "chill" these are our freedoms, whether you like them or not. What about when they make a mockery of Christianity? Being selective on who is acceptable to offend is not freedom...it's offensive.

The magazine cover illustrates the book that is to be sold in stores July 25/08. The book is called 'Obama: The Man Behind the Mask'. Andy Martin, a well-known journalist in the U.S., has done years of research into Obama's background and written the book. It could be that the cover of the magazine is a pre-lude to the book coming out. Apparently the book, said to be a block-buster in sales, has practically been sold out with pre-purchased orders. Should be an interesting election campaign to watch.

Given 911 Americans are not particularly sympathetic to the Moslim religion I don't think they "need proof" that Obama is a Moslim. They only need to suspect there is a thread of the religion in him and the gig is up.

Rightly or wrongly Obama is vunerable in this area and the photo of him in Moslim dress while in Africa can be used against him, as can the fact he attended a medressa (Islamic religious school) in Indonesia.

I'm not sayig it is right, but any savvy media guy could easily put together a successful series of ads like the Long Boat crew ads that brought down Kerry.

Apparently, the New Yorker overestimated the intelligence of it's readers. If people can't see the obvious satire, and choose to be offended or see this as tasteless, they really are missing the point entirely. But it is to be expected after the Mohammmed cartoons fiasco, when almost no North American newspaper or magazine had the courage to print the cartoons that were the cause of so much trouble. Satire is a form of free speech, but I suppose it's only OK so long as there's no chance that anyone might be offended (which ironically defeats the entire purpose of satire). Watch our Jon Stewart, they'll be coming after you next...

Obama's campaign reaxn makes me uneasy.
The New Yorker touched a nerve that makes me wonder if there is some plausibility to the scenario.
The cover is humour and an expression of a viewpoint.

The principal of freedom of the press comes with another - responsibility of the press. The image is not only incorrect but also offensive in the extreme. The part that really concerns me is while it is in the US press and done for US political purposes it, is an example of smear tactics so commonly used in the US. These smear tactics are being used more and more in Canada especially by the right wing camp.
It seems they feel they can not win on their philosophy so they will create a philosophy for the other side. They do not feel they need to portray an accurate image of the other side as they need to show an image that is weaker than their own.

Expect the same garbage in the next Canadian election.. I feel that an politician or party that initiates the negative campaign process is fundemental dishonest and not a politician I wish to represent me. On principal any party that starts a negative ad campaign does not get my vote.

I found this funny but then again I am fairly well educated. Most of Obama's supporters are educated. The New Yorker has long standing ties to the Democratic Party.

hello everyone,

i see very different points- of-view in each of your comments, but ultimately why does it matter if Obama is a Muslim or not. People remember that we should not judge people based on race or religion, base it on the person. And since when has being Muslim been offensive? Do people not learn from history, because as we all know history is doomed to repeat itself, and let that not happen..again.

Hurray for free speech!

While the cartoon is indeed in very bad taste and will be offensive to some, if it were published in Canada our wacked out leftist Darwinian ideologues who run the Human Rights Commissions wouldn't be able to hand out the indictments fast enough... in the name of "Political Correctness". GARBAGE!!

Free speech is dead in Canada and Canadians should be aware the Canadian Human Rights Commissions are responsible.

Time to take back our country so we can have the right to free speech even if it steps on a few toes now and again.

Smear culture in Canada too, eh
said

We're more like the USA than we like to think. This New Yorker cover is specific to media and political smears against Barack Obama, but what it is actually putting into a shameful light is hardly a tactic unheard of in Canada.

We have our own fanatical right wing up here who utilize attack cartoons and war-on-terror "You're with us or you're with the enemy" smear tactics on their opponents, albeit without the satirical jab against the culture of smearing that the New Yorker is obviously taking with that cartoon.

What dummies will confuse the New Yorker as saying about Obama is the essence of what our Conservative base utilizes as a cheap and tawdry political method.

"Taliban Jack" anyone? Who came up with that nickname, I wonder, and who relishes throwing it out into the discourse? It's your Canuck right wing base. Because according to them, of course, any politician who questions the methods of the Conservative base and offers a different approach is automatically in cahoots with the enemy, right?

Or critics of Canada's role in Afghanistan - anyone criticizing or questioning the Afghanistan mission is of course encouraging the enemy and endangering the troops. That right there is one of the most infuriating smears of all, and it's all straight verbatim out of Karl Rove's NeoCon dirty trick book.

Hopefully someday soon we'll drift away from this specific type of underhanded political smearing and deliberate linking of unrelated issues to squelch rational discussion of central issues. It's childish, it's underhanded, and the ongoing practice of it is doing us no good.

I think the flip flopping Sen.Obama who ran an very left wing primary to get rid of Sen.Clinton, before scrambling to the political right,is actually inviting some very close scrutiny.
I suppose we all know that politics is a very dirty business. But if you are running "against" traditional politics in favour of a more honest and transparent form of government, you really should actually conduct yourself accordingly.
He may be the best choice.I don't know. It's not our decision. But to me,the more I hear him,the more I'm inclined to see him as "just another politician".As phoney as the proverbial three dollar bill.

I hope this does not sway Mr. Obama's presidential campaign as I believe our neighbors deserve to have change brought to them in every sense of the word.

Hey people.

Relax.

Perhaps it IS too deep for people to recognize this for what it is ... making FUN of the right-wingers by taking an amalgam of their claims and putting it all together in one image.

But just as with the Mohamed cartoons, even if its controversial, its freedom of the press, and they have the right to print it.

Obama should not get any special treatment from the media than McCain would.

So don't complain about it. Its just satire or parody, though it might be more than the average American can interpret.

Why does anybody not see the joke in this? The right wing lunatics have all painted Obama with the same brush. The right works on paranoia, the monster under your bed while the real politicians talk about change, hope and inspire. This cover should be seen as what Obama is not. The public hasnt complained about this. Obama made it an issue, even though the New Yorker was making fun of his enemies. This isnt even an issue, the media is trying to focus on the anti muslim attacks to shield Obama from the more substantive attacks on his total lack of leadership experience. Focus on the racial/religious attacks because those are easier to defend than Obama's suped up resume.

The New Yorker knew exactly what it was doing...and I support their right to do so.

These days, you flog your wares with sensationalism and controversy. It's the best/easiest way to stand out in the crowd and garner attention for your product, whatever it is.

Clearly, the rednecked folks and those who appreciate pictures more than words will make the negative association the piece was, supposedly, intended to mock.

Everybody has an agenda. Big shocker.

The Obama camp has no choice but to come out screaming. If they need assistance in this endeavor, they should consult the Bush camp: he's been made out to be a mentally-handicapped, murderous war monger who thrives on death and destruction for economic gain.

Take a pill, people. Countless Americans have been trying to paint Obama with the Kennedy brush. His presidential journey has been lined with flowers thus far. A little challenging kick in the pants is good for him.

Wouldn't be surprised one bit if Obama's crew didn't draw the photo themselves and work with the New Yorker.
Obama's campaign has been doing their best to make this election about race and prejudice, and are doing a damn good job of it.
The response by those who think they are sophisticates here in Canada, are a perfect example: "ooh ooh, I don't want to be a dumb Right Wing, red neck racist, therefore I find this cover offensive. I should throw my support behind Obama".
This is the kind of tactics that McCain talked about and said he would have no part of. Because he can't win against the race/prejudice card.
Don't be fooled people, you will see many many more race/prejudice stories pop up, (like the priests and reverends and so forth) that are put out to the media by Obama's camp.
The Democrats are playing to the fears of Americans, except in a different manner.
A vote for Mcain = racist
A vot for Obama = good citizen

Yah right. Some of us are not that stupid.

Everyone comments on how tasteless and offensive this "picture" is but this "picture" of Obama was not painted by Barry Blitt. It was painted by blurbs in the popular media. Bit by bit it slipped by the target of a few jokes on The Daily Show.

The cartoon the Barry created simple takes these slurs and slips from the media and puts it together in one image.
The fact that people are outraged is a good thing.

"How dare you say that about Obama He is a good man"

Barry didn't say these things he simple illustrated remark's made by others. Hopefully this gets people blood pressure up enough to stop and think about these things and hopefully connect the dots.

Awesome Cover.

Obama is an ignorant elitist. The ability to speak does not make a good leader. Unfortunately, the media has decided he will be president, so they are force feeding all the sheeple out there images of him as a celebrity who has all the answers. If you actually know anything, and pay attention to what he says, he offers nothing new.

Remember when the media decided a democratic congress would change the world? Look what happened there. Nothing. Its another do nothing congress, and since Obama has nothing new to offer, it will be a do nothing 4 years, which everyone will blame on Bush, but in 10-15 years, history will show how ridiculous it was to put Obama in, and how Bush probably saved America.

It's called free speech. Comedy is only good if it doesn't have to be politically correct. Also, how many times has George W. Bush been made fun of?
It would be even better if someone could draw a cartoon showing how inept both Obama and McCain are when it comes to economic policy. Neither one is looking to balance the budget and Obama's tax plan would raise income taxes up to 65% in some states. Sounds like the Jimmy Carter economic plan to me.

The magazine cover succeeds in combining "a number of fantastical images about the Obamas". However, it fails to "show them for the obvious distortions they are." As it has been said in previous comments, the New Yorker, for the good or the bad, is being read primarily by the sophisticated and knowledgeable (SUV drivers, latte sippers, etc.) who presumably understand the spirit of the cartoon and will not feel offended by it. The obese, gun-toting bible preaching conservatives from Midamerica (object of open-mike comments by Obama himself) don't even know of the existence of the NY. So why worry? Are we recreating the sanguine uproar that followed the cartoons about Mohammad? Are we becoming like his supporters ourselves?

To the educated reader, whether Democrat, Republican or otherwise, the satirical elements of this cover and the "bringing to light" or the "calling out" of the fear inspiring perceptions of the Obamas that their "right wing critics have tried to create" that New Yorker says this chariciature aims to achieve, can be appreciated for what they are. I don't think that a cover like this is going to change the minds of any politically savvy voters who've already chosen their candidate, however to the uneducated, less critical citizen, (who probably doesn't read the New Yorker anyway) such imagery might have more of an effect. More ignorant folks tend to hop on bandwagons and/or rally behind such images, especially those who are predisposed towards not liking Barack Obama on the basis of his race.

Shame on Obama. I doubt this satire was too high-brow for his Harvard education, meaning he chose to align himself with the dimwits who flat-out did not grasp the nature of the joke. What a travesty. Free speech does not mean an absence of good taste and judgment.

I think this is in poor taste. Many people will understand the irony, but there are many who will not. And given that there is so much concern about terrorism in the US (as elsewhere) after 9/11, to portray a presidential candidate in this manner displays a lack of judgment, in my opinion.

The problem with satire is that you must be ever so careful as to the intended audience. Just ask Jonathan Swift. The two objectives achieved with this cover are greater awareness of the hypersensitivity which exists which stifles meaningful debate, and, oh yeah, greater sales of the magazine.

I have read some of the comments that focus on freedom of speech and false misconceptions. I’m gonna come at this differently. I condemn this magazine for suggesting they could satirize the image and concept of a Black Nationalist. The masses of Blacks in this country live in conditions comparable to 3rd world countries, and it’s the Black Nationalist who strongly advocates practical and productive changes especially in the areas politics, economics and education. It is unacceptable to satirize any individual who altruistically lives and gives their lives for the common good of those living in the lowest conditions of this country. One of the biggest misconceptions here is to think that just because a so called Black man is the front runner for the US presidency equates to better living standards for its Black citizens. You don’t have to agree with me, just read the USA stats on Black America. Blacks need Black Nationalists in this country so, New Yorker, satirizing the Black Nationalist is off limits unless your are a racist….

Democrats have no sense of humor and are so thin skinned. For years they have made cartoon of the president portraying him as a dummy and a criminal, Sec. Rice as Aunt Jemima and worse, V.P. Cheney's health and hunting skills, etc. Republicans know a joke or political satire and laugh it off.

This is a simple political cartoon, not to be taken serious. For any person that finds this offensive should take a step back and re-evaluate this depiction of Barrack and Michelle Obama.

The first amendment gives the right of every citizen of the U.S. the freedom of press, religion and speech; so with that said this is a harmless drawing that an artist posted with an article and did not see any problem with it prior to it being printed.

For anyone to find this offensive should do a web search for any international newspaper or magazine and view what they have posted as political cartoons or drawings depecting the U.S. and then look at this image again and realize that this is not even comparable to the offensive and distorted images that are depected and spread throughout a muslim-based deverse region of the world.
