Canadian soldiers are helping to catch hundreds of Taliban fighters who escaped from an Afghan prison, but a top general says the setback may still lead to problems for troops in the field.

Gen. Denis Thompson, the Canadian commandeer in Afghanistan, said local authorities are taking charge of hunting down the fugitives, while Canadian soldiers provide them with intelligence.

He said the prison break could have a long-term impact on Canada's mission in Afghanistan, with hundreds of militants now back in play.

"Eventually it may impact us in the field," he told reporters in Kandahar City.

The city's prison came under attack on Friday, when insurgents attacked with rockets, suicide bombers and an explosives-laden truck. Munir Mungle, Afghanistan's interior minister, said the prison had held 1,005 prisoners -- including 398 Taliban. It's believed most of them escaped.

On Saturday, Mungle said six Taliban believed to be escapees had been recaptured. Others are still on the loose after using fruit orchards near Sarposa Prison as hiding areas.

Nine police officers died in the attack. The truck bomb detonated at the front gates, a suicide bomber attacked the back wall, and rockets were fired inside the institution's courtyard.

"It is indeed a wild scene," Katherine O'Neill, a Globe and Mail reporter in Kandahar, told CTV Newsnet on Saturday.

"Soldiers are desperately searching for prisoners that are still remaining in the city, but as of today, a lot of them have already fled Kandahar City."

They have headed to the Taliban hotbeds southwest of the city, she said.

In Kandahar, residents were quite fearful. The escaped criminals ranged from thieves to murderers, O'Neill said.

People in the city have "hunkered down," she said, adding many could actually feel the blast at Sarposa on Friday.

The attack is seen as a huge setback for Canadian troops in Kandahar province. NATO officials concede the Taliban's attack was a success.

"We admit it,'' said International Security Assistance Force spokesperson Brig. Gen. Carlos Branco. "Their guys did the job properly in that sense, but it does not have a strategic impact. We should not draw any conclusion about the deterioration of the military operations in the area.''

O'Neil said it has "already been a busy fighting season" and some gains had been made by NATO troops, but now roughly 400 militants may once again take up arms.

Branco tried to downplay the potential damage.

"OK, they got some more fighters, more shooters,'' Branco said. "(But) these guys who escaped from the prison are not going to change the operational tempo and they do not provide the Taliban with operational initiative.''

Gen. Rick Hillier, who steps down as Canada's top soldier next month, told reporters in Calgary on Saturday the escape wouldn't raise the threat level for Canadian troops because Afghanistan is already a very dangerous mission.

The Taliban are smart. You can say the ANA should have been better prepared, but we all know that it isn't and wont be for a long time. Well Canada, are we glad that we transferred our prisoners now??

As a Canadian Soldier myself I find this to be just another example of the poor leadership which we have, as well as a wake-up call as to how little the Afghan Government and Police really help. The news report earlier on this week about talking with the Taliban was correct, unless we start some type of negotiations very little is going to change. Yes the PRT is making progress in some areas but if we were to leave that would all dissapear overnight.

While a tactical success for the Taliban this is indicative that they are becoming increasingly desperate and running low on "volunteers" for their cause. NATO should be encouraged by this fact and pick up the tempo of operations against them.

The Vietnamese showed the world how to beat and insurgency against Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia.

It takes patience perserverance, focus and a continued attack against their means of supply and personnel. Keep them living in squalor in caves and tents and hungry. Eventually rational thought takes over front ideological zeal and capitulation follows.

Hopefully NATO will stay the course and we will one day be able to no longer refer to Afghanistan as a failed state.

First off Eddytoronto get your facts straight, look up the meaning of an illegal war, another armchair warrior that has no idea but lots of babble. Next point maybe if we talked nice enough to the Taliban who escaped they might just return with there hands up .... well that's what the senate wants us to do 'talk to the taliban' ...

This is exactly why places such as GITMO exsist . All the hard work , determination and lives that our soldiers have sacraficed and now this ?? If you ask me , I think we should transfer the Taliban detainees to the Arctic , we can build them a nice little jail with all the nice things that some people feel they deserve . I would like to see them try and escape in the lovley Sub Arctic Temps. To the Soldiers Stay Safe and I pray that you will soon win this War on Terrorism .

Ken, you hit the nail on the head.

This is not an illegal war. What the Taliban-supported Al Qaeda did on 9/11 was. Do you remember that? Do you remember that we're there because some of our "Canadian brothers and sisters" were in those building and died?

This just is another example of how these people are extremist lunatics who have ZERO interest in talking. They are at war and they are in "jihad" mode. Do you know what a jihad is?

If these same people were sitting right next to you right now, you could say whatever you want and talk peace and respect and cooperation and understanding and yada, yada, yada and they would still decapitate you.

Some folks just don't get it. Al Qaeda and the Taliban and all those other muslim extremists are out to destroy the West no matter what because they believe it is their duty to God and they cannot renounce that duty even if it costs their lives. It is the same type of mindset the kamikazes had for their emperor during WWII.

These fanatics must be defeated on their soil or they will get stronger and reappear on ours again and bring more 9/11s.

Please, Kevin, as far as our freedom is concerned we have more to worry about from our own government and that of the USA than we do from anywhere else.

This may not have been an illegal war, but it certainly wasn't a necessary one.

Exiled Canadian, these wars have simply become blood for blood. The fighting is self-perpetuating because of both side's desire for vengeance on the other. Our continued presence in the Middle East is fostering an unending cycle of hate, unfortunately it seems like things are far past the point of diplomacy or reason.

'This is an illegal war we must withdraw NOW' !?!?!?!?

What drugs are you on? There is no withdrawing at this point. The Taliban are not attacking us because we are attacking them... they are attacking us because they believe that our very way of life is wrong. They attack us for existing and living our own way and not ours. And by the way... For all you naysayers out there making bad comments about our troops and their decisions... SHAME ON YOU!! If they didn't bring the fight to the talibans back yard, you can bet that nice easy chair your sitting in, that they would bring it to ours.(Like they have before) So at this point, the only thing coming out of your mouth is THANK YOU!! Your sitting in that easy chair because of their sacrifice. Remember when you look at your family, that they are safe because of the soldiers of canada (and not in regards to just this issue). SUPPORT YOUR TROOPS!!

This prison break was bound to happen some time or another, given its design and age. So it is pointless to point fingers and assign blame.

Like, westerners, the Taliban and al Qaeda know the meaning of Carpe Diem, and they did just that, taking advantage of a structure that was, from the security point of view, weak.

I have a husband over there and worry about him everyday but support him and what they are doing beyond that worry. The freedom that many of you have to express your thoughts whatever they may be is a luxury that our soliders are fighting to give the people over there. Please remember that.

They may see themselves as the Mujahideen, but the truth is that Taliban tactics more closely reflect the Soviet tactics. The Taliban have been ideologically undermined (We allow religion, self-government, education, and reconstruction); They just blow things up. So if these prisoners escape, then they'll run back to the fields, pick up guns, and then die from being dumb enough to try to (once more) shoot at the CF. Persistence is the the key to victory, but Persistent failure is the key to your enemies victory.

As someone who has served at KAF and in Kabul over the past 4 and a half years, I feel that my comments (even though on im posting them on a news site) are more than armchair politics. So John, I dont think its fair for you to say that. Given, while in KAF I didnt get a chance to go outside the wire and I am not an MP, that does not mean that I couldn't see the fact that transferring prisoners was a quick way to get them off our hands. The truth is, a prison could have been set up and run by NATO, maybe not ISAF but some rear echilon party. But the sad truth to that is that we sacrifice our humanity and goodwill for the ease of just giving away the prisoners. We know they will be abused and some will not even make it to the prison.
So John, it is easy to speak from the comfort of my own home, and I have definitley earned my right to speak from my own home. Its easy to dismiss this as armchair politics just because I am going against the popular majority (both government and military) but it is what I believe.

To Eddie of Toronto: You said "this is an illegal war" - I do believe you are confusing Iraq and Afghanistan together. Afghanistan was hijacked by some pretty nasty drug dealers posing as religious conservatives. These hijackers cornered the drug scene there, and enriched themselves by dominating the people. That domination comes from a preverse interpretation of Islam in the form of horrfic violence. A domination fortified by the elimination of schools to eliminate self-determination and critical-thinking of it's people. When the conservative gov't cuts education spending and then God-talks the masses in the USA as a substitute, do you not see the similarities between the Taliban and the right-wing-christians in the USA? For you to denounce Canada's actions is basically a vote supporting the Americans here at home and a vote of support for the Taliban in Afghanistan. It's sad.

Jen, I agree with you completely.

The fight is for freedom, so Afghans can enjoy a more complete, free and modern life like we do here.

To back up her husband's sacrifice, please let's find some way to tell our government that women's rights have to be part of our fight.

So far they are not since sharia law has been implemented.

Millions of little girls attending school is a noble accomplishment but won't help long term if they can still be legally beaten or killed by their government at some later date for kissing their boyfriend in public.

Until their justice system is gender blind and recognizes equality for all they will remain in a dark place as a society in spite of our efforts.

About 1,000 inmates of Sarposa prison in Afghanistan just escaped in a “surprising and well organized” Taliban raid.

We have no idea where our (Canadian captured prisoners) are being housed.

We now have one less jail in which to house them.

We have no idea who was being incarcerated in this prison and for what “crimes”.

We have no idea who has escaped, why they were there and how much of a threat they are to our Canadian troops.

There are now about 1,000 people who should not be in the Kandahar population who are now in the Kandahar population.

What is going on?

Who is in charge?

Is anyone else beginning to suspect that the Canadian public is not being told the truth of what is happening on the ground?

Madness!!

The Taliban are the home team and will always have a slight advantage on the ground.

The Canadian Forces knew this going in didn't they?

I think that if the Taliban is raiding prisons to replenish its numbers then it might be a sign that they are less formidable then they would have us believe.

But then how can we really know? They hide their numbers by blending in with regular Afghans.

HISTORICALLY HUGE coup for the Taliban that will be publicly dismissed by ISAF (BGen Branco) as nothing.

If the freed Taliban won't make an impact - then why were they locked up?

It doesn't say much for the ISAF/Afghan prison system if those that didn't take off are too old to flee -why are they there?

Support your troops, bring them home.

This incident, arguably, is a result of our own strategic failure to treat our justified involvement in Afganistan like a WAR and not a POLICING or PEACEKEEPING mission. The Taliban "enemy" here has an ideological hatred for us (the West); period. They will stop at nothing to kill any man, woman, or child who provides a means to their twisted end. Those of you who think this is all about us being over there in the first place are willfully ignorant of the obvious fact that they'll happily kill YOU on your own soil HERE! That's what 9/11 was about, bozos! Get with reality. Nothing angers me more than the pacifistic armchair intellectuals in the West who have no appreciation or understanding of democratic FREEDOM and what has been required, historically, to instill it and maintain it. You sit there in your safe (for the moment), comfy chair and forget all the past and present military efforts and sacrifices to preserve the superior lifestyle you utterly take for granted. Some causes are, indeed, worth fighting for. Freedom is certainly one of them! Not just freedom for obstinate little socialists here and across the West, but in countries where violent oppression is the law of the land. People (veterans) have died for your right to flap your left-wing gums. Support freedom everywhere. Support our military. Support the West's efforts.

This just shows that the TB can still co-ordinate effective attacks. We shouldn't underestimate them. Hopefully our allies will realize this and send more troops. This doesn't change anything about the mission and we'll keep moving forward. Canada doesn't negotiate with terrorists. I have read some very constructive comments here, and as usual the tinfoil hat crowd has had their say. Perhaps if these prisoners were in a real POW camp run by NATO this would not have happened. This is a war and these are POW's and should be interned as such. It is now painfully obvious that the Afghan police and ANA are not ready for this type of responsibility.

DH: "If the freed Taliban won't make an impact - then why were they locked up?"

Of course this is a huge coup for the Taliban. Unfortunately our leaders will now 'spin' it as no big deal. We live in a democracy but our leaders will lie to us and then lie some more.

bottom line: this mission is not winnable despite the propaganda.

Ron raises a good point, why were these Taliban mixed in with common criminals? Aren't they prisoners of war?. I am in the process of joining the Canadian Forces, Infantry and I would just like to say that although I will fight in any war Canadians want, I hope they consider war very carefully. I would apreciate support for the troops but I don't need anyone blindly supporting a war they feel is wrong just to make me feel it is justified. Personally I do feel that war in Afganistan is important given the threat of future terrorism and the previous repression of its people.

I am really tired of hearing the chauvanism and primitive chest thumping on these stories out of Afghanistan and Iraq.

While the USofA is killing in Iraq, the Taliban has spent the past several years re-arming, re-grouping and their missions have become more sophisticated, as we've seen in this prison break and all I hear from Canadians is the same drivel: 'support the troops', 'support gitmo'. I support neither.

The legality of this war is not the issue, the issue is this is a conflict that no one cares about; all eyes are on Iraq and Iran. Afghanistan is not even on the American radar, they have other imperialist quests they're pursuing.
