Deep in Brazil's jungles, one the world's last remaining uncontacted indigenous tribes has been spotted  and photographed for the first time from the air.

The pictures show tribesmen, painted red head to toe, aiming longbows at the aircraft circling above.

The tribe was found in the far western Amazon jungle, near the Peruvian border, Brazil's department for Indian affairs said Thursday.

The region they were found in was an Ethno-Environmental Protected Area, said the government foundation known as Funai.

In Pictures: One of world's last uncontacted tribes
Watch unedited video of the uncontacted tribe

Funai said it photographed "strong and healthy" warriors, six huts and an area of crops. It is not known which tribe the group belonged to.

"Four distinct isolated peoples exist in this region, whom we have accompanied for 20 years," Funai expert Jose Carlos Meirelles Junior said in a statement.

Funai does not make contact with indigenous people and prevents invasions of their lands, to ensure total autonomy for the tribes, the foundation said.

There are more than 100 uncontacted tribes worldwide, most of them in Brazil and Peru, said Survival International, a group that works to protect the human rights of tribal people.

Survival International said that the tribes in Brazil are in danger from illegal logging in Peru. They say the logging is driving uncontacted tribes over the Peru border and could lead to conflict with the 500 uncontacted people living on the Brazilian side.

The pictures were taken to counter those who said that there was no one living in the area.

"These pictures are further evidence that uncontacted tribes really do exist," Survival director Stephen Corry said on the group's website.

"The world needs to wake up to this, and ensure that their territory is protected in accordance with international law. Otherwise, they will soon be made extinct."

Fiona Watson, campaign co-coordinator for Survival International, said the tribesmen are likely "fragments" of what was once a much larger group.

"This is an area where there has been rubber extraction, historically, 100 or so years ago. They're probably the survivors of massacres ... who sought refuge deep in the Amazon rainforest for their own safety and protection," Watson told CTV Newsnet on Friday from London, England.

She said the defensive pose struck by the tribesmen, with spears pointed at the air, clearly shows they are defending themselves and are frightened at the sight of the plane above them.

"The message is clearly 'stay away, leave us alone.'"

Watson said contact with outsiders could even be fatal for these tribespeople, who would be vulnerable to diseases.

"These people are very isolated, they have no immunity to common things like the cold and flu and they could die very quickly," Watson told Newsnet

My husband & I were in the Amazon Basin in Feb. of this year and it is no surprise to us they found these people. The local people know of them and more groups beside these. They told us lots of stories, but they also leave them alone unless they make contact first. Most of the people there, although they have lots of contact with outside peoples have kept their simple way of life. They are the nicest people, the children unspoiled and friendly, just loved them. They use a lot of medicines from the jungle, and can help us with cures. We both loved the people & the area. For right now I believe these people will be left alone, but in the future they may decide to seek out others. That is their right if they do.

Unfortunately I think they may have unintentionally opened a can of worms. On the one hand it may deter those from logging or hunting illegally in those parts but now the world knows they're there and I wonder how long it is before someone is determined to be the first inside, or the disruption of they're life continues with helicopters and planes etc overhead taking pictures.

I wonder what they were thinking when they saw the helicopter?
Life must be very different living in such isolation compared to our modern world.

Wow that is very interesting! Nice to see that there are still some who haven't given in to the modern world!

Leave them alone. They will not want you to save them from themselves. They don't want your religion or government or your fast food service. They don't want your medical intervention or to be studied by your scholar's. They just want to be who they are. Leave them be. With the trees intact.

poor people...they must have been terrified seeing a helicopter flying above them.

mandosa

They've seen an aircraft circling above taking their picture. I'd say they are no longer isolated.

Steve in Aylmer

I can only hope they are left alone.

But no, someone Christopher Columbus wannabe is gonna venture in their territory, claim they discovered them, introduce the black book, change their way of life, get tribesmen fighting amongst themselves and lead them down a dark road. And when they're current way of life is vanquished we'll find a way to blame them for their problems...

Hummm, sound familiar?

CYL
said

Amazing find.... but please let them be, leave them protected from the uncivilized world we live in.

LM

So, when do we "save them" and tell them they have been living wrong for all these years.

I hope that they are left alone.

Adamwolfe

Amber you forgot one other incursion or rather two others - tourists and scientists. There are always those with too much money to burn who will want to take their own pictures and those who will exploit the situation for profit. Then there are the scientists of the world who believe we need to document and explore social structure, impact of disturbance such as the hovering aircraft have on a culture, etc... Would have been best if the world had never known. As you have indicated a can of worms or better yet Pandora's box has been open.

jennifer

Why is the animosity towards the Christians? They are far less likely to shoot them, polute them, steal their women, burn down their homes or take the trees than the logging companies!
The old Victorian missionaries weren't the best friends to have. But the anthropologists and the missionaries today are far more concerned with health, recording the tribal history and languages, and keeping them safe from the violent, corrupt worlds of logging and mining.

Somebody will have “sighted” Osama Bin Laden in the vicinity and the troops will soon be on the way. Besides, those WMD’s that they are attempting to use against the friendly helicopter will require a pre-empted defensive strike by NATO and an invasion to free the inhabitants from those suppressing the populace.

You say there is oil in the area?

Sonny

They look very scared and they should be. Given that someone wants the resources...

B.Gurney

Interesting, from the photos it would appear that they have not destroyed the environment around them....

My take is the only contact necessary is to take world/industry leaders to their tribe for a lesson on how to coexist with their planet

Fascinated

This is incredible.

Almost as if travelling back in time. A window to another world right in our own backyard.

To think, this tribe and their way of life are so remote they could have lived this long without contact.

I wonder if these people could even comprehend the fact that we have achieved technological advancements such as flight and have robots on Mars.

We should do our best to preserve the planet so peoples such as these can continue their lives without being forced to change from what has proven for them to be a small but successful society.

Perhaps, miracle drugs could be found, so as to help the rest of humanity.

WOW is right. This is interesting. Heres a place on earth where you can go to sleep at night in peace, no noise of TVs, radios blaring, wake up not hearing mud boogers, motorcycles trucks and cars racing around. A place where you can head out to hunt and fish in peace for food without the wife complaining that you are going and how long you are going to be out. No reglious group banging on your door early in the morning after you get home from night shift and probably here, no night shift working. No taxes, hunting and fishing lic. only fair trading to survive. I sure hope contact is made with these people so we can find out what their membership terms are.

Why do we automatically assume that they want to be left alone? Isn't curosity a human instinct? Isn't that what has driven us to explore the earth, and send rovers to Mars, or even land man on the moon?

They now know something or someone is here, shouldn't it be up to them if they wish contact?

You people kill me! If you are all so unhappy living in today's convenient world, why don't you just pack up all your crap and move to the jungle in Brazil? Why? Because you couldn't live without your cars, stereos, McDonalds and computers! I know I couldn't! Stop pretending you are so unhappy, if you truely are, then do something about it! And what makes you think they are better off being isolated? They probably live to a ripe old age of 29 because of disease and no medical care, maybe they throw babies and virgins into volcanos to appease the gods, and can you imagine how a teenage boy would be treated by the tribe's hunter-gatherers if he were to let it slip that he thinks about men more than women, and has no gay pride laws to protect him? Let's see, who haven't I offended?
Honestly I too think they should be left alone, just wanted to stir it up a bit, but seriously, stop complaining about how evil our society is, or do something about it.
And I too think its an X Box 360!

All of the comments on here have left me in awe at the stupidity of people. Most of the comments on here liken these people to gods...oh how enjoyable it would be to be so pure and simple and free of all of the corruption and greed of our terrible society blah blah blah blah blah. What is exactly so enviable? Would all of you people typing away on your computers really want to live a life where your entire day is spent working to produce food/perform menial tasks, all day every day. Man I wish I could live without the comforts of adequate living conditions, entertainment, and medical care. It would be way better to die from preventable diseases, because that is what their gods would want. The modern world has mapped the human genome and sent space craft to mars, we have made previously unimaginable breakthroughs. Is this world perfect? NO! but it is a lot better than living in the woods like we did thousands of years ago. If you think that way of life is so good, then go live it!!

Kinda know how these people feel having something strange over head taking their pictures. For kicks one day, I went onto google maps. Zoomed in on my house as far as it would let me. When the satellite was over head and snapped the picture, it shows some poor sole cutting the lawn.In our world with the advancements of technology, I even know it was me cutting the grass, as to this day, my wife still can not figure out how to start the mower and I have a picture from space to show it. I hope we leave these people alone as technology as great as it is, may ruin some guys life in that camp.

pp
said

Just because you're primative doesn't mean you're stupid.

I am sure they have seen air-craft before. and as for being 'uncontacted' that doesn't mean they themselves have not had contact with other 'contacted' tribes. It is the nature of humans to wander and migrate. I would just bet they are well aware of the rest of the world but wish not to interact with it for what ever reason. Even 'uncontacted' tribes in Papua New Guinea know about 'the others'.

Everyone thinks they are always the 'first' to go and do something - but sometimes others have gone before.

Jason from Calgary

I'm not sure what everyone is freaking out about here...

There is no issue as to whether or not anyone is going in there to study or "help" or anything.

These people are in a protected area where no one is allowed to enter. This includes governments, loggers, missionaries, corporations and scientists.

These people have been there for quite some time, and we've known about them. This is merely photographic proof to disway the people who want to destroy this protected sanctuary because they don't believe there is anything worth protecting in there.

I think you'll find these people will remain quite safe and untainted for many years to come.

And as for the comment above about Christians... Uhm, do you remember learning about something called the "Crusades"? I think religion, Christians included, have been the biggest offender of tainting cultures and causing war.

Lets not make this a religious issue though. The issue is, there is life on this planet that we have yet to discover, human life included. Just imagine the animal and plant life that has yet to be discovered on our own planet. This whole thing is just mezmorizing.

Paul
said

According to a BBC article, contacting these people physically is actually very dangerous for them -- common illnesses like colds and flus can actually kill them as they have had no prior exposure.

I don't think people should second-guess the motives of the people who took the photographs -- they are the one foundation in the world attempting to preserve their ways of life.

As for the Star Trek reference, if the Prime Directive was not to interfere -- not be even seen by aliens would have made for a very boring show. To follow that model, we should beam down immediately and make out with their queen.

The number of commenters arguing for their continued isolation is heartbreaking. These are human beings. They deserve the chance to experience the advances in science, medicine, and quality of life that you and I enjoy. To artificially extend their period of isolation is cruel and unjust. If they choose to live the primitive life then so be it, but they have a right to know the world is out there. Think of it this way - if there's a better way of living out there, wouldn't you want to know about it? Even if you couldn't adapt, wouldn't you want your kids to live better? These people shouldn't be forced to leave their homeland but their sick and their thinkers have a right to know about our modern world. This is not the Truman show; these are PEOPLE. They are not there for us to study like animals in a zoo.

Even as an anthropology student, I think it's incredibly important to leave these people undisturbed if that is what they want for themselves. European culture has a hideous track-record for how it treats indiginous peoples; as interesting and mysterious as this tribe may be, it's not our place to interfere in their lives uninvited, regardless of our motives.

Jennifer asks 'Why is the animosity towards the Christians?'

Oh gee, I dont know, those dove 'missionaries' you write about who only want to kill the heathen in them, manipulate them into giving up their way of life, their own pagan practices and language and customs and traditions and accept the Christian doctrine. It's called genocide and ethnic cleansing. The Christians have done it on every single continent on the planet; they refuse to leave other people, nations and cultures alone. It's part of arrogant colonialism; the natives in this continent, the Palestinians, the tribes of Africa, the Buddhists of Asia.

So...I'm thinking the hostility is because you can guarantee, as we speak, some Christians will be packing up their religious propaganda and biblical literature and plotting on how to encroach on this extraordinary tribe of humanity.

Absolutely leave them alone. They have none of society's developed immunities - can you immunize them from the common cold that would probably kill them? How well could they integrate in modern society? When any group of people are forced from their way of life, the transition is never completely smooth. Think of the indigenous peoples of North America - high rates of suicide, unemployment, depression, drug and alcohol abuse. Imagine the loss of their own histories that are usually handed down from generation to generation as oral tradition (I'm not saying that they don't have anything written down). Who is to say that it is guaranteed that these people will not lose their own identities. Isn't that what makes each person unique?

As for Jill and the comment about degredation towards women - get a grip. Again, not modern society, this is what they have lived with all these years. Who are we to judge and impose our will on others? Sounds like Big Brother syndrome to me!

For them, there is no such thing as a right or wrong way of life. Life just is.

Marilyn Ayers

This goes out to Pau.
Your comment,
"They deserve the gospel." Somewhat infuriates me and is part of why Christians get such a bad rap. They do not need to be fixed; they are not broken! Nor are they ignorant because they haven't read the word. They most likely have an incredibly spiritual existence from being one with the land, each other and their surroundings. They do not need you to put God in a tiny little box, accurately labelled (in your opinion) where His good works are restrained under human mistake and intervention.
And just for the record I am a 33 year old God loving woman. Just so you don't try to plead my ignorance.

With the amount of information given, how do you know it's that way? Maybe the women just happened to be in the hut at the time the pictures were taken. For all we know, the women could be in charge or they could be taking turns. Do you always immediately make assumptions? The pictures show the people right by their huts. For all we know, there very well could have been women out hunting beyond the sight of the camera, or maybe the women don't like to hunt. You really shouldn't jump right to conclusions when so little information is given.

Modern world:
80 years life expectacy
Sanitary conditions
Hospitals
Toilet paper
Easy access to food (both healthy and unhealthy types)
Protection and Safety

World of the Tribesmen:
40 years life expectancy
Unsanitary conditions
No toilet paper
Food may be scarce, hard to find
No protection and safety

And you guys suggest we leave them alone? Hell no, let's go save them! Let's introduce them to the miracles of modern civilization!

They need to hear the beautiful word of God and of Jesus Christ! And so does everyone else here, it seems!

Are we sure this is not the set for Survivor?

Now there is an endangered species.

Unspoiled children, self sufficient adults.

Wish the photographer had not published this. Now they will not have any peace.

But obviously Survival International wanted to expose these people.

Has anyone stopped to think what it must have been like for this tribe looking up a plane which they probably have never seen before? Imagine how that will affect their culture, beliefs, and religion! Imagine the stories that will be told to their children for the sake of our curiosity. The pictures were incredible, but I also feel for the people and how they must have been frightened!

Hey these tribesmen are not so different from us: shoot first ask questions later! ;-)

I think "Vivian in BC" said it best. . .why should we impose our will or way of life on them?

Pau:

Are you frickin' serious?!?!

In their state, they have a better connection with God than most people in our society, why would you destroy that to "bring" them religion? Spirituality and religion are two different things

The comment by Pau is exactly why we need to leave these people alone.

I think this is absolutely amazing and very interesting. The thing is though, of course we will be worried about people trying to go in and that, and everyone wants them left alone, which i agree with, but if anyone "ventures" in.. they will most likely be killed. They are holding spears and sticks at the helicopter, could you imagine if a few people in modern day clothes with a cell phone in one hand an itouch in the other.. the would probably start throwing the spears.. so i think no one will try bothering them because this tribe had been isolated and doesn't know what is out there.. they just think it is them

You could tell who the city folks are, just because they are living closer to nature as we could ever possibly dream of,we are going to mess it up for them. Just leave them alone. As for life expectancy .Better 10 years as a lion than 100 years as a sheep.

Perhaps it is time to invoke a Star Trek policy called the Prime Directive. When you come upon a civilisation that is not as advanced as yours, you do not make contact and you leave them alone. These people must embark on their own journey, without outside interference. Everytime advanced nations have interacted with indiginious people, they screwed it up. Our own Aboriginal peoples are a prime example.

For once the world should do the right thing and protect this area as a refuge for all wildlife (including the mighty "Homo sapien". We should all return to this way of life. Then we could protect the whole world as a large refuge for all wildlife. Sorry herbicide companies.

Leave them alone. I really hope we don't start looking at them as a research subject because it would most likely destroy their lives. They have obviously led perfectly fine lives without us so just let them be!

I don't see why there is so much concern about these people being left alone. I read that they have been "tracked" for twenty years now, the photos are only now being released to PROTECT them from logging/mining companies that want to intrude on the land where they live. These photos are being used as proof of their existence. Furthermore, I've also read that many similar tribes are aware of the outside world, but choose to continue with their traditional way of life. Similar tribes also occasionally trade with other locals for various goods. While I am unsure about this particular tribe, many of these groups are clearly aware of the modern world. I think the only danger to these people is the continued destruction of the Amazonian rain forest -- which is also endangering animal species and medicinal plants.

That's just amazing, I was so like shocked when I heard this. But still I think people should just leave them alone and let them be.

Chris

Give me 40 years of knowing exactly who I am, exactly what purpose I serve in my society, strong family ties to dozens of my relatives living immediately with me, and no knowledge of global warming, nuclear war, mass starvation, holocaust or species extinction, as opposed to 80 years of identity crisis, mid-life crisis, prescription meds to control the crisis, consumerism, inequality, and the problems inherent in living in an existentialist world any day. You can keep the bugs, though.
