Deep in Brazil's jungles, one the world's last remaining uncontacted indigenous tribes has been spotted and photographed for the first time from the air.
The pictures show tribesmen, painted red head to toe, aiming longbows at the aircraft circling above.
The tribe was found in the far western Amazon jungle, near the Peruvian border, Brazil's department for Indian affairs said Thursday.
The region they were found in was an Ethno-Environmental Protected Area, said the government foundation known as Funai.

Funai said it photographed "strong and healthy" warriors, six huts and an area of crops. It is not known which tribe the group belonged to.
"Four distinct isolated peoples exist in this region, whom we have accompanied for 20 years," Funai expert Jose Carlos Meirelles Junior said in a statement.
Funai does not make contact with indigenous people and prevents invasions of their lands, to ensure total autonomy for the tribes, the foundation said.
There are more than 100 uncontacted tribes worldwide, most of them in Brazil and Peru, said Survival International, a group that works to protect the human rights of tribal people.
Survival International said that the tribes in Brazil are in danger from illegal logging in Peru. They say the logging is driving uncontacted tribes over the Peru border and could lead to conflict with the 500 uncontacted people living on the Brazilian side.
The pictures were taken to counter those who said that there was no one living in the area.
"These pictures are further evidence that uncontacted tribes really do exist," Survival director Stephen Corry said on the group's website.
"The world needs to wake up to this, and ensure that their territory is protected in accordance with international law. Otherwise, they will soon be made extinct."
Fiona Watson, campaign co-coordinator for Survival International, said the tribesmen are likely "fragments" of what was once a much larger group.
"This is an area where there has been rubber extraction, historically, 100 or so years ago. They're probably the survivors of massacres ... who sought refuge deep in the Amazon rainforest for their own safety and protection," Watson told CTV Newsnet on Friday from London, England.
She said the defensive pose struck by the tribesmen, with spears pointed at the air, clearly shows they are defending themselves and are frightened at the sight of the plane above them.
"The message is clearly 'stay away, leave us alone.'"
Watson said contact with outsiders could even be fatal for these tribespeople, who would be vulnerable to diseases.
"These people are very isolated, they have no immunity to common things like the cold and flu and they could die very quickly," Watson told Newsnet

I applaud the budget, even though Health Care and education may stay unscathed. Sadly this cannot last and I worry to later this year where cuts will become enviable. If anything, this provides the Wildrose Alliance plenty of ammo when an election is called.

But no, someone Christopher Columbus wannabe is gonna venture in their territory, claim they discovered them, introduce the black book, change their way of life, get tribesmen fighting amongst themselves and lead them down a dark road. And when they're current way of life is vanquished we'll find a way to blame them for their problems...
Hummm, sound familiar?

The old Victorian missionaries weren't the best friends to have. But the anthropologists and the missionaries today are far more concerned with health, recording the tribal history and languages, and keeping them safe from the violent, corrupt worlds of logging and mining.

My take is the only contact necessary is to take world/industry leaders to their tribe for a lesson on how to coexist with their planet

Almost as if travelling back in time. A window to another world right in our own backyard.
To think, this tribe and their way of life are so remote they could have lived this long without contact.
I wonder if these people could even comprehend the fact that we have achieved technological advancements such as flight and have robots on Mars.
We should do our best to preserve the planet so peoples such as these can continue their lives without being forced to change from what has proven for them to be a small but successful society.

Clearly they are smart enough to know they DON'T want to be part of our society ...
LEAVE THEM ALONE ... let them continue their lives without our foolish intervention and "help". They've done fine for thousands of years - look what we've managed to do to our planet in the last 500!!!
Maybe WE should follow THEIR example rather than try to convert them to ours!!

They now know something or someone is here, shouldn't it be up to them if they wish contact?

Honestly I too think they should be left alone, just wanted to stir it up a bit, but seriously, stop complaining about how evil our society is, or do something about it.
And I too think its an X Box 360!

I am sure they have seen air-craft before. and as for being 'uncontacted' that doesn't mean they themselves have not had contact with other 'contacted' tribes. It is the nature of humans to wander and migrate. I would just bet they are well aware of the rest of the world but wish not to interact with it for what ever reason. Even 'uncontacted' tribes in Papua New Guinea know about 'the others'.
Everyone thinks they are always the 'first' to go and do something - but sometimes others have gone before.

There is no issue as to whether or not anyone is going in there to study or "help" or anything.
These people are in a protected area where no one is allowed to enter. This includes governments, loggers, missionaries, corporations and scientists.
These people have been there for quite some time, and we've known about them. This is merely photographic proof to disway the people who want to destroy this protected sanctuary because they don't believe there is anything worth protecting in there.
I think you'll find these people will remain quite safe and untainted for many years to come.
And as for the comment above about Christians... Uhm, do you remember learning about something called the "Crusades"? I think religion, Christians included, have been the biggest offender of tainting cultures and causing war.
Lets not make this a religious issue though. The issue is, there is life on this planet that we have yet to discover, human life included. Just imagine the animal and plant life that has yet to be discovered on our own planet. This whole thing is just mezmorizing.

I don't think people should second-guess the motives of the people who took the photographs -- they are the one foundation in the world attempting to preserve their ways of life.
As for the Star Trek reference, if the Prime Directive was not to interfere -- not be even seen by aliens would have made for a very boring show. To follow that model, we should beam down immediately and make out with their queen.

Doesn't sound like this poor tribe has much time left. Seems to me the developers/loggers are willing to say/do anything to rape the land they occupy. I feel, regrettably, that these tribesmen are on living borrowed time. My sympathies for their paradise lost.

Human beings aren't animals to be studied and catalogued. They have an inherent dignity and a right to know the truth. To let them continue to live in ignorance would be a crime.

What I do find interesting from reading the posts is that I'd bet real money that the people saying leave them along becuase modern society is not civalized itself would also want to contact these people becuase their religious or social values are not correct. Or they are not a "progressive" society as my idiot Liberal friends would say.

Oh gee, I dont know, those dove 'missionaries' you write about who only want to kill the heathen in them, manipulate them into giving up their way of life, their own pagan practices and language and customs and traditions and accept the Christian doctrine. It's called genocide and ethnic cleansing. The Christians have done it on every single continent on the planet; they refuse to leave other people, nations and cultures alone. It's part of arrogant colonialism; the natives in this continent, the Palestinians, the tribes of Africa, the Buddhists of Asia.
So...I'm thinking the hostility is because you can guarantee, as we speak, some Christians will be packing up their religious propaganda and biblical literature and plotting on how to encroach on this extraordinary tribe of humanity.

As for Jill and the comment about degredation towards women - get a grip. Again, not modern society, this is what they have lived with all these years. Who are we to judge and impose our will on others? Sounds like Big Brother syndrome to me!
For them, there is no such thing as a right or wrong way of life. Life just is.

Good luck indigenous tribe. The Christians are coming! The Christians are coming!"
Your words hold quite a sting, although historically you are quite correct. I would just like to note, that my Christian God does not care for or agree with their approach either. I think they are very fortunate to be of an uncontacted indigenous tribe. I would like to know where I could aply to such a peaceful existence? :0)

Your comment,
"They deserve the gospel." Somewhat infuriates me and is part of why Christians get such a bad rap. They do not need to be fixed; they are not broken! Nor are they ignorant because they haven't read the word. They most likely have an incredibly spiritual existence from being one with the land, each other and their surroundings. They do not need you to put God in a tiny little box, accurately labelled (in your opinion) where His good works are restrained under human mistake and intervention.
And just for the record I am a 33 year old God loving woman. Just so you don't try to plead my ignorance.

With the amount of information given, how do you know it's that way? Maybe the women just happened to be in the hut at the time the pictures were taken. For all we know, the women could be in charge or they could be taking turns. Do you always immediately make assumptions? The pictures show the people right by their huts. For all we know, there very well could have been women out hunting beyond the sight of the camera, or maybe the women don't like to hunt. You really shouldn't jump right to conclusions when so little information is given.

In their state, they have a better connection with God than most people in our society, why would you destroy that to "bring" them religion? Spirituality and religion are two different things
The comment by Pau is exactly why we need to leave these people alone.

Give me 40 years of knowing exactly who I am, exactly what purpose I serve in my society, strong family ties to dozens of my relatives living immediately with me, and no knowledge of global warming, nuclear war, mass starvation, holocaust or species extinction, as opposed to 80 years of identity crisis, mid-life crisis, prescription meds to control the crisis, consumerism, inequality, and the problems inherent in living in an existentialist world any day. You can keep the bugs, though.
