Israel has closed its borders with the West Bank and Gaza and set up extra security checkpoints as the nation celebrates its 60th anniversary.
Fireworks, an air show and nation-wide picnics were all part of the festivities as Israelis looked back with pride on the past, despite looming uncertainty about the future, said CTV's Middle East Bureau Chief Janis Mackey Frayer.
"This is almost a patriotic sigh of relief for people," she told Canada AM.
"They attach importance to milestones. Sixty years, they say, is not a long time to build what they see as a successful country -- though they acknowledge it still has its flaws. But people feel good they've come this far in 60 years, though they still have some uncertainty about what the next years will hold."
Israel experiences near-daily militant rocket attacks, militant threats from inside and outside its borders, tensions over Hamas-run Gaza and controversy over settlements in the Palestinian territories.
As well, a new criminal investigation into corruption allegations against Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, who is pushing for a peace agreement with moderate Palestinian leadership in the West Bank, may mean his job is in jeopardy.
"While this is being seen as a happy time, Israelis are also feeling a deep uncertainty, and it's not helped at all by the fact that the political leaders are constantly mired in scandal," Mackey Frayer said.
There is also little progress on peace talks brokered by U.S. President George Bush, who has set a goal of reaching a deal by the end of the year.
On Thursday, Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad said "the peace process is facing difficulties when compared with its declared goals."
Meanwhile, demonstrations in Gaza and the West Bank on Thursday served as a reminder that many Palestinians are still profoundly opposed to the Jewish state, the creation of which saw hundreds of thousands of Palestinians displaced in 1948.
In Bethlehem, The Associated Press reports roughly 500 marchers paraded behind a giant key symbolizing refugees' hope that they will one day return to their villages in what is now Israel. Most of those communities no longer exist.
The deep-rooted tension and disagreements in the region, Mackey Frayer said, suggest the objectives set out by Bush seem increasingly out of reach.
And if demographic trends continue, Arabs, who now make up one-fifth of Israel's population could become a majority -- another concern for Israelis looking for a more secure future, she said, reporting from a beach where thousands of Israelis had gathered to celebrate.
"People feel a lot better about looking at the past -- looking at the success of the past 60 years than looking ahead to the future because it is so uncertain," Mackey Frayer said.

Two questions:
1) What does Mr Colvin personally have to gain by what he is exposing ?
2) What has the Goverment gain or protect by discrediting Mr Colvin?

60 years ago Palestine was occupied.
60 years ago the largest refugee population in the world was born.
60 years ago the world turned a blind eye to one of the most henious crimes.
The world still seems to think Israel is a victim.. a victim with means to occupy, destroy and kill innocent civilians.
What a shame...

Palestinians are a wonderful people group - and like Jews who are Jews no matter where they live, Palestinians are Palestinians no matter where they live.
The region called Palestine came about after the destruction of the original Jewish lands in the first place.

Have a good one Israel but use this time to reflect on the past 60 years and to think about ways to make the next 60 better, for all people and peoples on your territory and in your region.

God promised the Jews he would bring this nation back together one day and this seems to have been fulfilled 60 years ago. This doesn’t mean they won’t experience a great deal of trouble however.
I believe the bible suggests a group of countries which includes Persia will invade Israel one day but will be thoroughly defeated never to be heard from again. After this there is supposed to be a short period of piece as a new world order is established. Interesting times ahead and all eyes will be on Israel.

Eor the naysayers, if Israel ceased to exist do you really think anything would improve in the Mid East? the violence against Arabs, especially women and the vulnerable, is lower in Israel than any other Mid East country. I did two tours of duty with Canadian UN forces in Egypt and the Golan Heights. A few R&R spent in Israel was like getting back in touch with positive in mankind.

Ask the Irish if Ireland still existed while the British tyranny of occupation was forced on them.
American, Polish, Russian, German, French, African, Indian & Chinese Jews are not originally from Palestine.
This madness that God made a real estate deal with the Jews of some 'Promised Land' and then forcing this religious irrationality on the world to deal with must be stopped.
Zionism is a European creation of imperialism and it's modern out post in the Middle East is Israel.

We are now guilty of intentional mass slaughter: Quana,Sabra & Shatilla, Deir Yessan massacres, just to name a few.
We've become blinded by our own demands, most self-evident in our alliance with the Christian Zionists who would see us all dead or converted; we've befriended our enemies and crippled our friends.
As a Jew, I feel sorrow not celebration.

In the future, I would like to see middle eastern problems stay in the middle east, rather than pull us into this centuries old conflict (ie 9/11).

Everyone who is condemning the Israelies or the Palestinians are being foolish.
The reality is both have committed horrible crimes. The history has been scewed by all sides. Israel and Palestine are working towards frinding a peaceful solution. Israel has been at its least aggressive in 60 years, and on both sides their are leaders who genuinely want peace.
All the extremists condemning Israel, if you do truly care about the Palestinians, you should be encouraging them on the path of peace. hate begets hate, vegence begets vengence, blood begets blood.
Or to put it simpler, as Ghandi put it " an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind."
We must let the evils of the past go, with the hope of building a better tommorrow.

Since my previous message was not posted... I'll keep this one simple:
1. Haganah -> Jewish militia (do your research)
2. British Mandate of Palestine -> Palestine
3. Israel -> created as a result of terroristic actions of Haganah

Nor from a completely outside perspective.. I must admit I am still torn between being happy for the Israelis and their celebration.. and feeling bad for the refugees who lost their homes long ago. But either way.. I'm glad there can be a little bit of joy in that tortured part of the world today. Happy 60th!

1948 - UN partition plan - Israel & Palestinian state side by side. Jews accepted - Arabs attacked.
1964 - PLO founded by Arafat. Attacks on civilians begin in force. There are no occupied "territories" in 1964.
1967 - Egypt, Syria & Jordan attack Israel. Results? Territories from which the aggression commenced were lost.
1998 - Arafat was offered 96% of the land in return for a peace of piece of paper. Response? Intifada hostilities.

As for the Palestinians, here's a viewpoint from a refugee from Eastern Europe.
Millions of people in Eastern Europe lost land unjustly before, during and after WW 2, my family included. They did not waste 3 generations whining, screaming or engaging in terrorism - they accepted that bad things happen in history and moved on to build better lives elsewhere.
It's time the Palestinians faced the hard facts - we all had to do that after WW 2 - and got over it. Move on: those lands are lost forever. Do something productive with your lives instead of wasting generations of youth on a fight that only makes yourselves more miserable.
