Brenda Martin's mother says her daughter is in a much better mood now that she's out of a Mexican jail and back in Canada.
Marjorie Bletcher saw her daughter for the first time in years at the Grand Valley Institution for Women in Kitchener, Ont. That's where Martin was taken after being flown to Canada from Mexico on Thursday.
Bletcher says her daughter is still getting used to colder Canadian temperatures, but is glad to be closer to her family. Those who helped get Martin out of the Mexican jail, where she had languished for more than two years, say she's just happy to be back in Canada.
"She called me last night and was so excited," said Debra Tieleman, Martin's childhood friend who was instrumental in bringing the case to government and media attention.
Tieleman said Martin told her: "Oh my gosh, I'm so happy to be in Canada. Thank everyone who helped me do this."
Martin received an unexpected prison transfer from Mexico on Thursday afternoon after spending more than two years in a Guadalajara prison. She was convicted of money laundering last month in relation to her former boss's Internet fraud scheme.
Martin was eligible for parole the moment she returned to Canadian soil, according to the National Parole Board.
Parole board spokesperson Nadine Archambault-Chapleau told The Canadian Press that because Martin is a first-time offender serving time for a non-violent crime, she is eligible for an accelerated parole review.
Archambault-Chapleau said Martin's time already served will factor in to her parole eligibility.
"Under the Offender Transfer Act, (it) turns out that she is eligible right away -- as of May 1, 2008, actually," Archambault-Chapleau said.
On Friday, many Canadians had their say about the entire affair, with the majority of callers to talk radio shows believing Martin got preferential treatment because of all the publicity.
"There was a genuine opinion ... that the government went overboard," CFRA Ottawa radio host Steve Madely told CTV Newsnet's Mike Duffy Live.
Madley's show also conducted a non-scientific Internet poll and 84 per cent of 1,200 people who voted said the government treatment afforded Martin was "way over the top." Many listeners didn't like the fact that she was given a private jet home, and they also wondered if the government will also help hundreds of other Canadians in foreign jails.
A Mexican judge sentenced the 51-year-old Trenton native to a minimum of five years in jail and fined her about $3,500. Ottawa loaned Martin the money to pay the fine.
Martin had spent two years in a Mexican prison before hearing her verdict.
"She seemed a 100 per cent better than she's been in the past few days, although she said she's sort of overwhelmed," Bletcher had said Thursday. "She's going to be able to get the help she needs."
Martin has said she developed addictions to "anti-depressants, sleeping pills, anti-stress pills, pain-killers by injection (and) anti-anxiety injections" during her time at the Puente Grande women's prison. The facility's staff placed her on suicide watch for the latter part of her stay there.

Two questions:
1) What does Mr Colvin personally have to gain by what he is exposing ?
2) What has the Goverment gain or protect by discrediting Mr Colvin?

Those who don't think she deserves the help of the Canadian government simply don't understand how the Mexican (un)justice system works.
There is plenty of evidence to support her innocence, including statements from those involved who said she was not involved.
If you were in a 3rd world country and found yourself in a similar situation, I'm willing to bet you'd want the Canadian government in your corner. In any event, the Canadian Consulate in Mexico failed to do its job for over 2 years.

Yes, the media went overboard in the coverage of her case.
No, I am not convinced she's guilty. If she did swindle people, where are the luxury cars? the Swiss bank account? The Mexican authorities could not produce any proof of her guilt.
Remember these are the same idiots that tought that the Canadian couple that was murdered in Acapulco had been killed by two ladies from Sudbury... Yeah right.
By the way, Have the Mexican solve this crime yet?
No? Why do you think they did a better job on Martin?
Would you trust your life to the Mexican Police?
No?
Than Shut up.

Let is also be a lesson to Canadians. We are not a wonderful people to assume that we would be treated well in foreign soil. Whether innocent or guilty.

Her family or herself should be made to pay for the flight. I think this is a sad display of how Canadian officials were 'played' by the media and Martin.

What about the young man in Saudi Arabia that's going to be beheaded next week? Do we go there and interupt their system too? I hope the very best for him!
This should be a lesson for people going to other countries for work or play.

The living conditions were deplorable and food was not provided - friends, family, and well-doers were expected to do that. My heart goes out to Brenda, and not only have I been eager to find out how her plight has been going (thank you to the Harper government and thank you to the media), but I would love to be able to hear more about how she is getting along. I hope she is surrounded by the support she needs and protected from the callous attitudes of so many.

Do not compare this case with others where guilt has been proven. We need to know the details before we start complaining about the costs etc.
Each case must be handled individually just as each case is handled individually in our court of law on a daily basis. Anyone who serves on a jury must have all the facts before they can issue a verdict. As peers, we too must have the facts before we can issue a verdict.

The amount of taxes she has paid into the system by the time she is her age has more than paid for that plane flight 100 times over, and into your health care, etc.
As if you haven't dipped into the tax money SHE has paid throughout her lifetime.
Evidently, those who make the "taxpayer" complaint will have to relearn math - at the taxpayer's expense (to use your own ridiculous argument)

If she is innocent and she was your family member would you want her left rotting in a Mexican jail? I'm guessing the answer is no.
If she's guilty and was your family member would you want her rotting in a Mexican jail? Again, I'll guess that the answer would be no.
As a taxpayer I have no problems footing the bill in order to get someone out of a country like Mexico.
Hats off to the Feds for getting the job done, listening to their people and showing us what democracy is all about!
To those of you that think she should have stayed there, open your hearts and put yourself in someone elses shoes before you end up IN those shoes yourself.

She wasn't kidnapped and taken there; she chose to go to Mexico, and when you go to a foreign country, you live by their laws.
Now, we need to ensure that ANY money she makes from the inevitable book deals etc. goes first to pay back every cent the Canadian taxpayers have wasted on this convicted criminal!

People don't seem to realize that injustice is the name of the game in many other countries. One of the purposes of our consulates is to act in assistance for Canadians in trouble in other countries, whether it be with their legal systems or otherwise.
Many of you would rather be barbaric and whine about how this affects your taxes -- would you rather we were like other countries, abandoning our citizens for political expediency?
Grow up.

I know this is not the same thing but being at the wrong place at the wrong time in foreign country is enough to be incarcerated. (As watching a demonstration without being part of it.)
I work in Mexico for 5 years and even though they are some corruption, we can't put all the Mexicans in the same boat and hate them all. What would you think if they all thought of us a being arrogant, above their laws, know everything, snoby tourists.
Although there are a few Canadians like that, we are not all like that.

Step two of this fiasco is she'll be suing the government for millions because they somehow owed her a 'duty of care' when she was living abroad and NOT paying taxes all those years. Yet my tax dollars go to "save" this "poor" and "suffering" soul.
When will we as a society develop some integrity and courage, and tell people "you reap what you sow."

This is hardly a slippery slope. Prisoner transfers have happened for years.
That said, it annoys me that this story has had so much attention. It also ticks me off that it was apparently a government chartered private jet that picked her up. Her supporters should be picking up the tab, not taxpayers.

I don't know if she is innocent or guilty but I do know that 2 years is much too long to spend in prison while Mexico's corrupted justice system takes its time. Prisoner transferring happens ALL THE TIME.
Get a life people...imagine if this were you or someone you loved in this situation. I'm sure you'd be "whining" as much as Brenda Martin and her supporters.

But I am annoyed by the media driven frenzy to get this woman out. I also think a private jet ride home,at taxpayers expense, went way over the top,Even if a person was convinced the government "owed her" something.
Mexico is a third world environment.I guess if you holiday there, and stay in resorts, that fact might escape you.Do not expect improvements in their justice system any time soon. Before that issue even shows up on the radar, they have to feed their people, fight drug cartels, and pander to rich tourists.
I think Brenda Martin was not as Canadian as she claims. At least, not until she got in trouble. If she had not ended up in jail,we would likely never have seen her in Canada again.
And finally,it is clear she outright lied about government efforts on her behalf.I have no trouble debating differences of opinion that are honestly held. But I have no time for people who just plain lie in an effort to strenthen their side of any disagreement.
I'm glad you're safe from a corrupt justice system, and a situation you got yourself into.I would ask only one thing from you now.Go away and quit whining.I am not interested in sending any more tax dollars to rescue you from your own stupidity.

To those who have said "I knew she was guilty", please keep in mind that all you have is a BELIEF. No one except Brenda Martin herself knows what she did or did not do. A guilty verdict is not proof that she committed any crime, especially when that verdict takes two years and comes from a questionable justice system such as Mexico's.
I'm glad that my taxes are helping to defend the rights and freedoms of Canadians abroad, even if it did take the Conservative government two years to finally act on the matter.
A fellow human being and Canadian was in trouble, people. Have a little compassion.

It is nice to see more and more people FINALLY realizing this and coming to the conclusion that we must boycott this country. After Countless "suspicious" and "accidental" deaths and of course the Brenda Martin saga we still have many, many Canadians giving their hard earned dollars to these criminals in Mexico.
Anyone who would willingly take a trip to this country at this point is simply foolish.

A person who chooses to be a Permanent Resident of another country must agree to live by the laws of that other country. It is also incumbent upon them to LEARN what those laws are.
It is unreasonable to expect any country to have a multiple-tier justice system for it's citizens based on where the individual in question immigrated from. As well, Canadian Law does not extend beyond Canadian borders.
When Brenda Martin moved to Mexico and became a permanent resident there, she subjected herself to their rule of law. And under that rule of law, the accused must prove their innocence. That's the law there whether we like it/agree with it or not.

I don't think she is as innocent as she would like us to believe. Kudos to her, though. Brenda's wish was granted. She is back on Canadian soil. She even managed to get a private plane back to her "home" country.
Is she planning a news conference to thank her fellow Canadians and her government for supporting her and helping her?
Merc

Yes i do know that there are several hundred more Canadians that have most likely been falsely accused in other foreign prisons, but unfortunately this one got recognition because of the media attention her former boss had created.
She's back home now and that's all there is left to say on the matter.
We no longer need to discuss this further, now onto more important matters, like the idiots that think BIOFUEL is the answer to Global Warming when in fact it will make it alot worse, It's not enough that there is already a food shortage in the world they gotta make it worse by reserving food stores for producing BIOFUELS.

Don't forget that Canada 'enjoys' the lowest productivity and efficiency levels of any civilized country. If you are a hard working Canadian you are in a tiny minority. I think most of the people bleating about their hard-earned dollars going to help Brenda are on that form of corporate welfare that passes for work in this country.
Welcome home, Brenda. Don't worry about the tax money, because it is clear that Canadians didn't have to work that hard to earn it in the first place.

And who wouldn't accept a job offer from a fellow Canadian, especially in a "resort" country like Mexico... many people do so, and they should not be ridiculed for it, as our job market here is difficult to break into for someone with perhaps a limited skill set. We cannot judge and name-call on this point. For all you know, had Brenda stayed in Canada those 10 years, she could have been on E.I. the whole time! Use your brains, people.
Brenda's only fault was that she had a boss who turned out to be a criminal. Look around you... can you tell who, among you, is involved in criminal or subversive activity, just by looking at them... just by talking to them... maybe you're working with a criminal in your midst, and you don't know it! But you shouldn't and wouldn't be arrested for that, here in Canada. This is what separates us from them.
Also, blaming Brenda Martin over the type of airplane in which she was flown back to Canada is foolhearty. Brenda did not order the plane, the Canadian government did. If you wish to be so icy cold and nasty about those decisions, please direct your ire at the Canadian government, not Brenda, who has suffered quite enough.

The next thing is that Miss Martin has been out of the country for 10 years, working Mexico, I find it hard to believe that she had no knowledge of what her employer was doing, I think that trying to hide millions of dollars cannot be that easy. And for her say that she had no knowledge of this tells me one thing: what kind of employee was she??
The next thing that you know that she gets into trouble and she runs back the Country that she had left for 10 YEARS, looking for help! Where was her loyality to her home nation for the past 10 Years.
She was convicted buy their government under their laws, people seem to forget that when they travel outside of the country they are subject to the laws of the country and they are living in or visiting. How many people from Canada are living or working outside the country and how many have we heard of that are in trouble. ( only two situations that have been in the media about criminal offenses that i have heard of in the past few months)
She is basically coming home and will be given her release very soon, where is the justice of her conviction, i guess the precedent has been sent: commit a crime in a foreign country, cry to the press, threaten to take your own life and the country that you left 10 years ago will pay for your fines and expenses to get back to the country that you left.
