Date: Fri. May. 2 2008 10:44 PM ET

Brenda Martin's mother says her daughter is in a much better mood now that she's out of a Mexican jail and back in Canada.

Marjorie Bletcher saw her daughter for the first time in years at the Grand Valley Institution for Women in Kitchener, Ont. That's where Martin was taken after being flown to Canada from Mexico on Thursday.

Bletcher says her daughter is still getting used to colder Canadian temperatures, but is glad to be closer to her family. Those who helped get Martin out of the Mexican jail, where she had languished for more than two years, say she's just happy to be back in Canada.

"She called me last night and was so excited," said Debra Tieleman, Martin's childhood friend who was instrumental in bringing the case to government and media attention.

Tieleman said Martin told her: "Oh my gosh, I'm so happy to be in Canada. Thank everyone who helped me do this."

Martin received an unexpected prison transfer from Mexico on Thursday afternoon after spending more than two years in a Guadalajara prison. She was convicted of money laundering last month in relation to her former boss's Internet fraud scheme.

Martin was eligible for parole the moment she returned to Canadian soil, according to the National Parole Board.

Parole board spokesperson Nadine Archambault-Chapleau told The Canadian Press that because Martin is a first-time offender serving time for a non-violent crime, she is eligible for an accelerated parole review.

Archambault-Chapleau said Martin's time already served will factor in to her parole eligibility.

"Under the Offender Transfer Act, (it) turns out that she is eligible right away -- as of May 1, 2008, actually," Archambault-Chapleau said.

On Friday, many Canadians had their say about the entire affair, with the majority of callers to talk radio shows believing Martin got preferential treatment because of all the publicity.

"There was a genuine opinion ... that the government went overboard," CFRA Ottawa radio host Steve Madely told CTV Newsnet's Mike Duffy Live.

Madley's show also conducted a non-scientific Internet poll and 84 per cent of 1,200 people who voted said the government treatment afforded Martin was "way over the top." Many listeners didn't like the fact that she was given a private jet home, and they also wondered if the government will also help hundreds of other Canadians in foreign jails.

A Mexican judge sentenced the 51-year-old Trenton native to a minimum of five years in jail and fined her about $3,500. Ottawa loaned Martin the money to pay the fine.

Martin had spent two years in a Mexican prison before hearing her verdict.

"She seemed a 100 per cent better than she's been in the past few days, although she said she's sort of overwhelmed," Bletcher had said Thursday. "She's going to be able to get the help she needs."

Martin has said she developed addictions to "anti-depressants, sleeping pills, anti-stress pills, pain-killers by injection (and) anti-anxiety injections" during her time at the Puente Grande women's prison. The facility's staff placed her on suicide watch for the latter part of her stay there.

Brenda Martin commits a crime in Mexico, and now we have to foot the bill for her incarceration.

Awesome.

Please, Please, let's drop this story now. More than enough time, money & media space has been devoted to this person and her "plight". I think the vast majority of Canadians are basically sick and tired of all the flap she has caused.
Naturally she is "innocent", all convicted people are victums of a miscarriage of justice.

Why are we giving so much attention to this individual? The Canadian Government has paid her fine, transported her back to Canada in a lear jet, and the media continues to flog this story as a means of gaining sympathy for her from the general Canadian public. We should have left her in Mexico. Bleeding hearts in Canada have made us a joke around the world.

I seriously dislike this storyline about B.Martin. Hopefully there are no more updates after this....

I agree 100%- I am really upset that we as taxpayers paid for her to be transported back in a private jet / paid her fine / that she will not be incarcerated very long and out on "good behavior". Are we "nuts"? Let her work off the bill and pay us back for the legal fees / the transportation and the fine.

When will this media driven circus end? It would be nice if some media person when interviewing Brenda Martin's mother would ask how long it's been since she has seen her daughter. Ten years? Twenty years? This story is such a farce! I support the Harper government in most things they have accomplished but I do not understand why they have bent over backwards to bring this woman to Canada, paid her fine, and flew her here on a private jet no less! It's mind boggling!I suppose the next thing we the taxpayers will have to fund will be psychiatric care for Ms. Martin. Enough already!

I was just thrilled when I heard on CTV last night that Brenda was on her way back home. I am still very angry at the Mexican government for convicting a person based on association rather than evidence. I have travelled to Mexico several times but no more. I will not spend 1$ of my hard earned vacation money on a corrupt government ever again. For those of you who think our government should not have gotten involved and that Brenda should just accept the punishment in a land far away>>> I ask you this: Do you travell? What if you were picked up and arrested but not charged for over 2 years? Should your country just abondon you because your either vacationing or living in another country? I bet you would be the first crying and begging for help. Do not judge someone's guilt or innocence without all the facts and surely have empathy for another who is being held without a valid charge against them.

Alex

Why are we giving a convicted criminal so much attention? If one committed a crime, whether Canadian or not, one should face the consequence.

Anthony
said

This is a very slippery slope the government has taken on this issue. It now sets a precedent for other convicted Canadians abroad that have been convicted in the laws of that respective country to have their sentence served here under our tax dollars. I'm sorry but if you are in another country, and your punishment for your crime is to have your hands chopped off, that is the punishment you have to face under the laws the country abides by.

It's about time.

Those who don't think she deserves the help of the Canadian government simply don't understand how the Mexican (un)justice system works.

There is plenty of evidence to support her innocence, including statements from those involved who said she was not involved.

If you were in a 3rd world country and found yourself in a similar situation, I'm willing to bet you'd want the Canadian government in your corner. In any event, the Canadian Consulate in Mexico failed to do its job for over 2 years.

Francis
said

You are all pretty rough on her.

Yes, the media went overboard in the coverage of her case.

No, I am not convinced she's guilty. If she did swindle people, where are the luxury cars? the Swiss bank account? The Mexican authorities could not produce any proof of her guilt.

Remember these are the same idiots that tought that the Canadian couple that was murdered in Acapulco had been killed by two ladies from Sudbury... Yeah right.

By the way, Have the Mexican solve this crime yet?

No? Why do you think they did a better job on Martin?

Would you trust your life to the Mexican Police?

No?

Than Shut up.

Enough already........her 15 minutes of fame is way over. Brenda Martin has made us all look like fools for just being from her"country".Her friends have used us all for fools and we'll be paying her bill for quite sometime. Thanks Brenda, something else I can't afford.

Brenda Martin is back in Canada. Finally. Let Mexico pay her the injustice and let Canada move more siftly next time this happens.
Let is also be a lesson to Canadians. We are not a wonderful people to assume that we would be treated well in foreign soil. Whether innocent or guilty.

Nick T

YAY! Canadian taxpayers got to shell out for her private jet flight to come home to Canada! Maybe I should go to Mexico and cry on TV and I'll get the same treatment...

Her family or herself should be made to pay for the flight. I think this is a sad display of how Canadian officials were 'played' by the media and Martin.

Yes, hopefully we have heard enough of this. Glad to hear that she is back in Canada. Now Brenda can get a job here and start paying taxes. Of course, now Brenda will write a book and make lots of new money.
What about the young man in Saudi Arabia that's going to be beheaded next week? Do we go there and interupt their system too? I hope the very best for him!
This should be a lesson for people going to other countries for work or play.
Know their laws...

Have we now set a dangerous precedent? Is every Canadian criminal abroad now going to expect preferential treatment a a free jet home, after we pay their fine for them? How do we know this woman is innocent? She may be, but we only have her word for it. I think if she was a man or didn'y cry on que whenever a camera was pointed at her, she would still be in Mexico.

I can't believe how harsh you people are being. The story would be different if it was you or one of your friends or family. I don't know if Brenda Martin is guilty or not but basic human rights are not considered in jails in Mexico. No one should ever have to endure that and the so-called Justice system in Mexico.
I loved Mexico when I visited in 2000 but I will never go there again.

Count me in with those who are glad to see Brenda back in Canada. Years ago I was with a ministry in Mexico and we visited a prison weekly. The women we visited had already been in there for years and were expected to be in there for more years to come - for suspected possession of marijuana.
The living conditions were deplorable and food was not provided - friends, family, and well-doers were expected to do that. My heart goes out to Brenda, and not only have I been eager to find out how her plight has been going (thank you to the Harper government and thank you to the media), but I would love to be able to hear more about how she is getting along. I hope she is surrounded by the support she needs and protected from the callous attitudes of so many.

J.C.
said

Do you really think that Canadian officials would go so far out of their way to assist this woman if there were actual proof of her guilt? In Canada she is innocent until proven guilty but in Mexico she is guilty until she proves herself innocent.
Do not compare this case with others where guilt has been proven. We need to know the details before we start complaining about the costs etc.
Each case must be handled individually just as each case is handled individually in our court of law on a daily basis. Anyone who serves on a jury must have all the facts before they can issue a verdict. As peers, we too must have the facts before we can issue a verdict.

All of you so-called Canadians are heartless. If this was your family member or "YOURSELF" in this situation wouldn't you want your fellow Canadians to come and get you out especially if you're innocent. Read the news, it is happening all the time in Mexico, Canadians being harassed when on vacation, accused of crimes they didn't commit. Or worst yet murdered. If you're tired of the media coverage change the channel or don't read the newspaper. Happy to have you home on Canadian soil Brenda Martin.

I can't believe how foolish this country has become. She committed and was convicted of a crime in a foreign country. Let her serve her time there. Why should all of us have to pay for her crime? Does this set a new standard for the rest of criminals worldwide? Can they expect to be brought "home" to serve their time? What about any Canadians held in U.S. jails. Will all of them be brought home? Seriously, the politicians are getting more pathetic every day.

True justice is transparent. Brenda Martin did not have a fair incarceration or trial in Mexico, guilty or not. Better to bring her home and then look at what happened, no matter what the outcome is. Poor woman, I am glad she is home, and let our justices anazlyse everything. For crying out loud, I am ashamed at the comments on this message board. Have a heart, and if you no longer follow the story, go about your lives, and stop victimizing further a very horrible situation of one of our flock injured and be happy she is back amoung us. Save an individual from harm, that is a grace that even the most hardened citizen is paying his or her taxes for. Thank God , welcome back Ms. Martin, let's get you sorted.

JMB
said

Oh you poor taxpayers! Do you honestly think Ms. Martin has never paid her fair share of taxes? Get a clue.

The amount of taxes she has paid into the system by the time she is her age has more than paid for that plane flight 100 times over, and into your health care, etc.

As if you haven't dipped into the tax money SHE has paid throughout her lifetime.

Evidently, those who make the "taxpayer" complaint will have to relearn math - at the taxpayer's expense (to use your own ridiculous argument)

Ryan
said

When I read some of these comments I feel absolutely ashamed that my fellow Canadians can be so thoughtless. I hope that whenever Canadians are imprisoned abroad and not permitted to due process that the media continues to broadcast and give attention to it. Many Canadians take our system for granted and think that the same justice system prevails around the world. Well I've got some shocking news people...it doesn't. Where corruption and bribery lead the "justice" system we must stand up for our citizens. I suppose most will never understand until they experience something like this...and if it happens, I bet they'll be wishing the government would help them and get their story some attention to bring you home. Whether guilty or not, everyone deserves due process. It is a human right. I think people need to open their eyes and look at the injustices all around the world. Even in Canada we have seen several wrongful convictions that have been overturned and we think of our system as one of the best in the world.

Hey - let's just all chill about Ms. Martin. She is back in Canada there is no going back except for her to obtain the necessary help required for the substance abuse while in jail. Good luck Ms. Martin but please move on now on your own with the support of your family. There are other things that we should be talking about.

Stop complaining about Mexico people. When you go to another country you abide by THEIR rules and are subject to THEIR laws and conviction. You have no right to complain unless you are a citizen of that country and pay taxes to them. If you don't like it, don't go there.

As mentioned before - thanks Brenda for spending more of my money. You can reimburse us when you get out.

Congrats to the Cdn Gov't for stepping up to the plate on this and listening to the people. This woman (guilty or not) had to be brought home. Mexico is known for it's corrupt policing.

If she is innocent and she was your family member would you want her left rotting in a Mexican jail? I'm guessing the answer is no.

If she's guilty and was your family member would you want her rotting in a Mexican jail? Again, I'll guess that the answer would be no.

As a taxpayer I have no problems footing the bill in order to get someone out of a country like Mexico.

Hats off to the Feds for getting the job done, listening to their people and showing us what democracy is all about!

To those of you that think she should have stayed there, open your hearts and put yourself in someone elses shoes before you end up IN those shoes yourself.

She should have been left in Mexico to serve every second of her sentence.

She wasn't kidnapped and taken there; she chose to go to Mexico, and when you go to a foreign country, you live by their laws.

Now, we need to ensure that ANY money she makes from the inevitable book deals etc. goes first to pay back every cent the Canadian taxpayers have wasted on this convicted criminal!

Ben Trafford
said

Goodness, you naysayers are dense. Canada has treaties with several countries, including the U.S., to transfer prisoners here to serve their time at home. And this is a good thing -- it aids in the rehabilitation process. Or are you more interested in the "Law and Order" style punishment than seeing them return to being valued members of society? Are you really buying into the fiction that justice is always served and everybody who gets convicted should be treated like an animal?

People don't seem to realize that injustice is the name of the game in many other countries. One of the purposes of our consulates is to act in assistance for Canadians in trouble in other countries, whether it be with their legal systems or otherwise.

Many of you would rather be barbaric and whine about how this affects your taxes -- would you rather we were like other countries, abandoning our citizens for political expediency?

Grow up.

What I don't like about this case is that the emotions and comments stem from selective opinions made by individuals to push our thinking their way. I'm sure that a lot of facts are ommitted by both sides therefore we will never know that full story.

I know this is not the same thing but being at the wrong place at the wrong time in foreign country is enough to be incarcerated. (As watching a demonstration without being part of it.)

I work in Mexico for 5 years and even though they are some corruption, we can't put all the Mexicans in the same boat and hate them all. What would you think if they all thought of us a being arrogant, above their laws, know everything, snoby tourists.

Although there are a few Canadians like that, we are not all like that.

If you were innocent Mrs. Martin, welcome home....

I am surprised at how many people are down on Mexico. I have been going down there for 15 years and never had a problem. I agree with Kelly. I will never ever set foot in Mexico. I am also shocked at the lack of empathy for Ms. Martin. Maybe we should remember your names and if you get into trouble in a backward foreign country and ask for Canadian help, we'll just look the other way.

JDP
said

I hope if I'm convicted of a crime that I get the red carpet treatment - national news coverage, visits from statesmen, the government paying my fine, and of course, a private jet to take me home for my trouble.

Step two of this fiasco is she'll be suing the government for millions because they somehow owed her a 'duty of care' when she was living abroad and NOT paying taxes all those years. Yet my tax dollars go to "save" this "poor" and "suffering" soul.

When will we as a society develop some integrity and courage, and tell people "you reap what you sow."

Eric

Anthony,

This is hardly a slippery slope. Prisoner transfers have happened for years.

I don't know if she is innocent or guilty but I do know that 2 years is much too long to spend in prison while Mexico's corrupted justice system takes its time. Prisoner transferring happens ALL THE TIME.

Thank you CTV for posting comments of all opinions - the way it should be in a free and democratric society. Another Canadian network failed to publish many comments. One was mine in response to another poster who thought that if Canada brought Brenda Martin home, it should also bring home Omar Khadr from Gitmo. In my rebuttle I mentioned to the other poster that there is a significant differance between Brenda Martin and a terrorist. Omar killed a US soldier. He was in an area were suspected terrorists are known to be. Now he is in Gitmo being interrorgated, as he should be. What is a 15 year old kid; allegedly a Canadian citizen doing killing US servicemen in Iraq.If the US needs to torture him to get valuable information, and stop more servicemen from being killed I say "bring out the waterboard" and get all the itel you can.The Canadain government should support the war on terror and leave Omar Kadar in Gitmo.

Imagine this scenario - the police show up at your door, arrest you, and haul you to jail. No charges are laid for months or even years. When charges are finally laid, the burden is not on the state to prove your guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Instead, the burden is on you to prove your innocence. You will have a chance to do that once you are eventually told what you are charged with. In the meantime, you spend your days in pre-trial custody. That is what Ms. Martin faced. Was she guilty? I don't know. I didn't hear the evidence, I wasn't privy to the case, so I won't make judgments about that. I will say that I would personally find it troubling to be so morally superior and judgmental toward her unless I knew all the facts and circumstances. Do you?

I'm glad she's out.I am not sure if she is innocent or guilty. At this time, that all seems irrelevant.
But I am annoyed by the media driven frenzy to get this woman out. I also think a private jet ride home,at taxpayers expense, went way over the top,Even if a person was convinced the government "owed her" something.
Mexico is a third world environment.I guess if you holiday there, and stay in resorts, that fact might escape you.Do not expect improvements in their justice system any time soon. Before that issue even shows up on the radar, they have to feed their people, fight drug cartels, and pander to rich tourists.
I think Brenda Martin was not as Canadian as she claims. At least, not until she got in trouble. If she had not ended up in jail,we would likely never have seen her in Canada again.
And finally,it is clear she outright lied about government efforts on her behalf.I have no trouble debating differences of opinion that are honestly held. But I have no time for people who just plain lie in an effort to strenthen their side of any disagreement.
I'm glad you're safe from a corrupt justice system, and a situation you got yourself into.I would ask only one thing from you now.Go away and quit whining.I am not interested in sending any more tax dollars to rescue you from your own stupidity.

I'd like to add my voice to those who are thrilled that Brenda Martin is finally back in Canada after her ordeal. Ms. Martin, I hope you can find the peace you have so desperately sought for these past two years.

To those who have said "I knew she was guilty", please keep in mind that all you have is a BELIEF. No one except Brenda Martin herself knows what she did or did not do. A guilty verdict is not proof that she committed any crime, especially when that verdict takes two years and comes from a questionable justice system such as Mexico's.

I'm glad that my taxes are helping to defend the rights and freedoms of Canadians abroad, even if it did take the Conservative government two years to finally act on the matter.

JayTee . . . Brenda Martin was found guilty in a judicial process that is completely opposite to what we in Canada believe and support to be proper (as do most countries the world over). Furthermore, we're not footing the bill for Brenda Martin, we're footing the bill with taxpayers' dollars because it's worth it to defend our beliefs let alone human rights. My God man, we go to war for these very same beliefs, rights and privileges and at an immense cost not just in taxpayers' dollars but their lives!

I see a lot of people making comments on how wrong it was to help a "convicted criminal" & how the government worked so hard to get her out. First of all I hardly consider her a convicted criminal when she had no trial & was not found guilty by a jury of her peer's as it is here. A judge (& probably a corrupt one) looked at the evidence he wanted to see to sereve the adgenda of the mexican government. Secondly, our government who "bent over backwards" to bring her back to canada only did so when the media brought this to light, she had been in that place for 2 years, where were they then. Guilty or not it was totally wrong to keep someone imprisioned for years without charges. If she was so guilty why did it take 2 years for the mexican's to press charges & have their farce of a "trial". Shame on all of you, for being so cold hearted over such a disgusting betrayal of human rights. As for her emotional disp;ays on tv, if I were in her place I would plea to anyone I could to get out of such a hell hole & to get fair humane treatment. I'm sure you all would too, if you climbed down off your canadian high horse for a minute.

There are hundreds of commercial flights out of Mexico every day, but we the taxpayer have to give a convicted criminal ( A genuine conviction regardless of the country!) a free ride back in a private jet !!!
And then we ask the rest of the world to respect Canada?

Sean Calder
said

I can not stress this enough. A visitor to another country must respect their laws while in that country, just as we would expect someone to abide by our laws while in our country.

A person who chooses to be a Permanent Resident of another country must agree to live by the laws of that other country. It is also incumbent upon them to LEARN what those laws are.

It is unreasonable to expect any country to have a multiple-tier justice system for it's citizens based on where the individual in question immigrated from. As well, Canadian Law does not extend beyond Canadian borders.

When Brenda Martin moved to Mexico and became a permanent resident there, she subjected herself to their rule of law. And under that rule of law, the accused must prove their innocence. That's the law there whether we like it/agree with it or not.

I agree with Kelly's comments. I don't understand how people can be so upset that our government reached out to help a Canadian citizen. As a taxpayer I don't have any objection to money well spent.

Bee said "There is plenty of evidence to support her innocence, including statements from those involved who said she was not involved."

Uh, statements from a FRAUD ARTIST assuring us she wasn't involved? Who wouldn't believe him?

I'm satisfied Canadian officials took care of our Brenda Martin by bringing her home to Canada where she belongs. I'm happy she could be going home soon.

I am sick and tired about reading all the stories behind "poor" Brenda Martin. She has lived outside of Canada for years, gets caught in a crime, gets her jail sentence and starts crying about the lack of Canadian support. So the Government jumps in pounding their chests to show it's power and then following her release they fly her home on a government Challenger aircraft, that for a return trip has got to cost teh taxpayers close to $100,000 based on government accounting. Now the news is she is getting set to be released from jail. STOP this nonsense and let's get back on track as to where good money should be spent. As the old saying goes, "you do the crime, you do the time".

to "Colin". She is not guilty of anything. A Mexican court is not a real court, and therefore their judgement is not really to be taken seriously, just like the whole justice sysyem in Mexico. However, I do agree with you on one point - Brenda should have been flown back on a commercial flight. As for Canada deserving respect - our country deserves the utmost of respect. We are a great nation of democratic freedom loving people, and should not be taking BS from anyone, let alone Mexico.

It's interesting to still read the comments here. For the most part, opinion seems divided along gender lines. Most of those who feel that "Brenda" is innocent and was a victim of the Mexicans, are women, while most who feel that the Canadian public is being fleeced and shouldn't be paying for her trip home are men. While I have some knowledge on matters legal, I can say that there is a Federal Act on our books which provides for Canadians convicted in Foreign countries to serve out the remainder of their sentence in Canadian jails, however in this case since Ms. Martin was only just sentenced, it is somewhat unusual that she would be sent home to serve her complete sentence. Albeit she won't have to serve any more time in jail here, due to Canada's prison release guidelines. We can all gripe about the Mexican legal system all we want, but the fact remains that the burden of proof is on the accused and not the prosecution, so the Mexicans were acting within the boundaries of their judicial system whether we like it or not. I for one do not believe that she had no knowledge of where the money came from though, and the judge didn't believe her either. I hope now that the government has satisfied all of her "supporters", that we don't start to see criticism that the government only did it because it was such a high profile case, and to garner votes. I think she definitely got more from the gov than the average person would, but I think under the circumstances it was not unusual to use the challenger jet to bring her home and avoid the media circus that would have resulted at Pearson airport otherwise.

I wonder how many of these posters who are being so harsh are actually Canadians, in soil and in heart. The Mexican justice system doesn't work like ours. Here in Canada you are innocent until proven guilty. In Mexico Your Guilty until proven innocent. Brenda Martin had a mexican lawyer who didn't do his job, and had her sign a confession without getting a translator for it. The Private jet was one returning to Canada with an MPP from the Northumberland riding who went down to help with the transfer before the sentencing took place.
Welcome home Brenda from all of us in Trenton

I do believe that it should not have taken two years to charge anyone. However if she was found guilty and we do have proper prisoner exchange procedures in place then she should be transferred back to Canada like anyone else convicted in Mexico or USA or Jamaica. As for taking a private plane, generally doing a prisoner transfer authorities don't use commercial airlines to transport people. How much would it have cost to book full fare flights for the two or three RCMP to fly down there, pick her up, and then the 4 full fare tickets back from Mexico to whichever city that the plane happened to fly to. 7 one way tickets or the fuel for a plane that the government already owns? Easy call. I do hope the government makes her pay back the $3500 loan or at least let the money raised by donations go to cover it.

Very interesting story.

I don't think she is as innocent as she would like us to believe. Kudos to her, though. Brenda's wish was granted. She is back on Canadian soil. She even managed to get a private plane back to her "home" country.

Is she planning a news conference to thank her fellow Canadians and her government for supporting her and helping her?

Just so most of you so-called Canadians know, we didn't pay the bill, she was LOANED the money by the feds....She is expected to pay it back, and some sources say that she has already paid it off. So quit your whining. You're probably one of those welfare cases that wouldn't lift a finger to help anyone but yourself.
Yes i do know that there are several hundred more Canadians that have most likely been falsely accused in other foreign prisons, but unfortunately this one got recognition because of the media attention her former boss had created.

She's back home now and that's all there is left to say on the matter.

We no longer need to discuss this further, now onto more important matters, like the idiots that think BIOFUEL is the answer to Global Warming when in fact it will make it alot worse, It's not enough that there is already a food shortage in the world they gotta make it worse by reserving food stores for producing BIOFUELS.

Whining about allegations of misallocation of tax dollars is fine, but please spare me the sanctimonious rubbish about 'hard working' Canadians of 'hard earned' tax dollars.

Don't forget that Canada 'enjoys' the lowest productivity and efficiency levels of any civilized country. If you are a hard working Canadian you are in a tiny minority. I think most of the people bleating about their hard-earned dollars going to help Brenda are on that form of corporate welfare that passes for work in this country.

Welcome home, Brenda. Don't worry about the tax money, because it is clear that Canadians didn't have to work that hard to earn it in the first place.

I can't believe all the people on here whining about how much Ms. Martin's plight affects their tax dollars! As if the money that has been used to pay for her rightful return to Canada has come directly out of your own pocket. Grow up and shut up, in the big scheme of things it probably cost you personally about 5 cents to bring her home. If we can't all spare a nickel to help out someone in need, then, well, I'm sad to call myself a Canadian

It's awful, the nasty comments about Brenda... those who make nasty comments should really try to put themselves in her shoes.

And who wouldn't accept a job offer from a fellow Canadian, especially in a "resort" country like Mexico... many people do so, and they should not be ridiculed for it, as our job market here is difficult to break into for someone with perhaps a limited skill set. We cannot judge and name-call on this point. For all you know, had Brenda stayed in Canada those 10 years, she could have been on E.I. the whole time! Use your brains, people.

Brenda's only fault was that she had a boss who turned out to be a criminal. Look around you... can you tell who, among you, is involved in criminal or subversive activity, just by looking at them... just by talking to them... maybe you're working with a criminal in your midst, and you don't know it! But you shouldn't and wouldn't be arrested for that, here in Canada. This is what separates us from them.

Also, blaming Brenda Martin over the type of airplane in which she was flown back to Canada is foolhearty. Brenda did not order the plane, the Canadian government did. If you wish to be so icy cold and nasty about those decisions, please direct your ire at the Canadian government, not Brenda, who has suffered quite enough.

She was guilty of a crime, its as simple as that. If the Canadian government had to pay the $3500.00 then she obviously didn't have the extra thousands to reinvest with her ex-employer. When was the last time Joe Canada flew in a lear jet that didnt have hockey equipment in its cargo hold. She should have stayed in Mexico where she chose to live and work in the first place.

She might be released from custody already? I thought she might have preferred some time in prison to partake in another beauty contest (Canadian edition). I heard she finished 1st place in Mexico.

Let's kill this story already! I feel absolutely nothing for a convict who took part in credit card fraud...I'm a victim of this type of crime.

This issue is not about inappropriate spending of tax dollars (if any one of us was in trouble in another country, we wouldn't want the government to say, "Sorry, can't spend tax dollars to help you."). This is WHY we pay tax dollars!! Mexico has a tradition of treating Canadians poorly. Conviction of innocent Canadians or fellow citizens are killed. When are Canadian's going to boycott Mexico. When are Canucks gonna stop spending $$ in Mexico??

Bleeding hearts everywhere... The assunption by some that because she is a Canadian she is automatically innocent and must be saved is an insult to the intelligence of the rest of US Canadians. Money and time gone in the wrong direction.

Brenda Martin aside, what happens to next "criminal" who has the option of serving their 5 year sentence in Canada only to see the Canadian government let them go a week later. If I was a Mexican I wouldn't let another prisoner leave my country ever again. Guilty or not she and her supporters constant "lobbying" has ruined any chance of transfer for every Canadian in a Mexican jail.

This story is starting to get very tiring to say the least. I have traveled to Mexico twice, the Dominican Republic and Panama, I have never had a problem when I have traveled to these locations, so the people that have said the they would never go there, would probably never go anyways. ( you don't know what you are missing)

The next thing is that Miss Martin has been out of the country for 10 years, working Mexico, I find it hard to believe that she had no knowledge of what her employer was doing, I think that trying to hide millions of dollars cannot be that easy. And for her say that she had no knowledge of this tells me one thing: what kind of employee was she??

The next thing that you know that she gets into trouble and she runs back the Country that she had left for 10 YEARS, looking for help! Where was her loyality to her home nation for the past 10 Years.

She was convicted buy their government under their laws, people seem to forget that when they travel outside of the country they are subject to the laws of the country and they are living in or visiting. How many people from Canada are living or working outside the country and how many have we heard of that are in trouble. ( only two situations that have been in the media about criminal offenses that i have heard of in the past few months)

She is basically coming home and will be given her release very soon, where is the justice of her conviction, i guess the precedent has been sent: commit a crime in a foreign country, cry to the press, threaten to take your own life and the country that you left 10 years ago will pay for your fines and expenses to get back to the country that you left.

From what I have heard through the news media so far, it appears that Brenda Martin is innocent. Therefore, all those (including her friend and the Canadian Government) who worked so hard to bring her home to justice, should be commended.

Now that we have Ms. Martin back, can we forget about her and move on with our lives? I mean it isn't like she is a great Canadian hero, she is an average Canadian who was found guilty of a crime in Mexico. If anyone should learn anything about this, if you are going to go to Mexico, make sure your don't break any of their "laws".

I would like people to stop for a moment and think...it is so easy to give comments about other people and their issues...but if you had to walk a day in her shoes would you feel the same way? Imagine the impossible, you are in another country and you are now the one in jail for something you may or may not have done...what would you do? Ask Canada for help?
Welcome back Brenda.

Enough of this sob story of a poor woman who spent 10 years in Mexico, still unable to speak Spanish, arrested for a crime she may or may not have committed, suddenly turning to Canada for help in her predicament. Was she not aware of the Mexican legal system? Her mother hasn't even seen her in 5 years. Why not? Videos of her in prison were not of a woman in desperate need of psychological help.
Make sure she pays back every cent she owes the government, especially those for a private jet.

For Merc. I forgot to add that there are approximately 1,700 Canadians in foreign prisons - the majority in the USA. Should we pay their fines and fly them home too? Why is Ms. Martin more special than those still in foreign prisons.

I am happy to see Brenda back home in Canada. However, to all those stating she is innocent they need to remember she was working illegaly in a foreign country. This would indicate she has broke atleast one other law regardless during her stay in Mexico. I think its great she is back but don't be too quick to release her based of the pleas of "innocence".

So now everybody wants to complain. It was just a few months ago their was a public outcry that the government wasn't doing anything on this case, and now that the government has responded, people still want to complain! Make up your minds. I don't think the government should have ever got involved in this case, and they probably wouldn't have - but you the public demanded it, so live with it.

Kevin,

Just checked on pricing and a similar plane cost $6700.00 an hour to operate.
Could have a few full price seats for that minimum six hour return flight.
Carefull, those private jets are pricey

To each her own, I guess. Brenda Martin hasn't cost the government nor its citizens an exorbitant amount of either cash or attention, IMO. Anyone decrying the time and media exposure in this travesty ought to look within to discover why they subject themselves to this kind of so-called torture, again IMO. I see no one holding you hostage to your television set, newspaper, newsfeed, et so forthia. FINALLY, who is the true hero of this sad story? Debra Tieleman. No two ways about it. What an incredible friend she's been, a true stalwart, never flagging nor failing her obviously deserving friend (and, with a friend of that calibre, I can only conclude Brenda Martin's cause was a worthy one). 'Nuff said. Welcome home, Ms. Martin. Thank you for reminding Canadians such as myself of the true value and meaning of friendship, Ms. Tieleman. May this May-Day trauma one day become a cause for a lifetime of celebrations for the two of you. (Yes, I'm a Zoomer :).)

The "actions" of our government is due to the campaign of Dan McTeague, not anyone in the Harper government. Harper was content to let her rot there and if he didn't think the government was going to fall on C-10 and be tainted by the in-and-out scandal, she'd be there still, but he thought finally stepping up to the plate 2 years too late was worth setting his party ops on this board to "congratulate" Harper, not McTeague, on bringing this case to the forefront.
