Shenae Grimes as Darcy Edwards on 'Degrassi: The Next Generation.' Grimes grabs lead in '90210' spinoffUpdated Tue. Apr. 29 2008 12:13 PM ET CTV.ca "Degrassi" star Shenae Grimes has landed the lead role in a spinoff of the 90s drama "Beverly Hills 90210." Grimes, 18, will play the lead character in the new series, Annie Mills. Fans of "Degrassi" know Grimes for her portrayal of Darcy Edwards, who joined the series full-time in season five. "Degrassi" is currently in its seventh year, which airs Monday nights on CTV. It's been a tough season for Darcy, who was the victim of rape, spiralled into depression and attempted suicide. Grimes won a Gemini last year for her performance on the show. In addition to her acting career, Grimes is currently an intern at Fashion Television in Toronto. Various media sources say that the Canadian actress was offered the role on "90210" after it was turned down by Hillary Duff. Lori Loughlin will play Annie's mother, Celia Mills, a former Olympic athlete who moves to Beverly Hills when her husband becomes principal of a local school. The "90210" spinoff will air in the U.S. on the "CW" network.
