An Oshawa, Ont., teen held in China for stealing a pair of sunglasses from an airport kiosk is preparing to come home.
The 15-year-old girl pleaded guilty to shoplifting a $300 pair of sunglasses in front of an English-speaking judge in a Hong Kong courtroom on Tuesday.
The criminal charge was dropped as a result but the girl was ordered to pay a fine of $140.
The dropped charge will help facilitate her return into Canada, her father told CTV Toronto.
The Grade 10 student was arrested just before she was supposed to board a plane home with her classmates from R.S. McLaughlin Secondary School in Oshawa.
The group was on a school field trip to the region over the March Break holiday. The girl was not put into jail but was ordered to stay in a hotel under the constant supervision of a teacher at the school who offered to stay behind with the student.
The girl is a good kid, her father said. He said his daughter admitted her mistake and wants to come home. She is scared but doing well, he said.
"It was a bone-headed play in the wrong country," the father said. "If it had happened at Wal-Mart in Oshawa, no one would have cared but life is full of learning experiences."
The father added his daughter was treated "very well."
The student is expected to arrive home on Wednesday.

I applaud the budget, even though Health Care and education may stay unscathed. Sadly this cannot last and I worry to later this year where cuts will become enviable. If anything, this provides the Wildrose Alliance plenty of ammo when an election is called.
