The saying may be "Move west, young man," but a new report on Canada's most dangerous cities says if you want to live in a safe city -- you might want to consider moving east.

Of the top-10 most dangerous cities in the country, the first nine are all west of Ontario. Halifax, which took the final spot in the top-10, was the only eastern entry.

The Maclean's magazine report, based on crime reports from 2006 and calculated per capita, deems Regina -- home of the RCMP training facility-- the most dangerous city in Canada.

The rankings of cities on the most dangerous list:

  1. Regina
  2. Saskatoon
  3. Winnipeg
  4. Prince George, B.C.
  5. Edmonton
  6. New Westminster, B.C.
  7. Chilliwack, B.C.
  8. Victoria
  9. Vancouver
  10. Halifax

Despite the often-grisly headlines, both Montreal and Toronto fell well outside the top-ten at 19, and 26, respectively.

Ken MacQueen, Maclean's B.C. bureau chief, spoke with CTV's Canada AM Thursday.

"The biggest surprise was that so many were in the West," MacQueen said of the report.

MacQueen said he spoke to a number of criminologists who gave him a number of reasons for the West's crime problems.

He said that while the 'Wild West" syndrome was mentioned, the main reason given was the West's "pockets of dysfunction." He referred to the high number of drug users in Vancouver and Victoria as a reason for crime in those cities and a large "at-risk" community of urban aboriginals in Winnipeg, Saskatoon and Regina.

The report also broke down the most dangerous cities for specific crime:

  • Murder - Arthabaska, Que.
  • Auto theft - Winnipeg
  • Aggravated assault - Regina
  • Sexual assault - Saskatoon
  • Robbery - Saskatoon
  • Break and enter -Chilliwack, B.C.

The report also listed the safest places in Canada, which were mostly smaller communities in Central Canada.

The top five safest places in Canada:

  1. Caledon, Ont
  2. Maskoutains, Que.
  3. Nottawasaga, Ont
  4. Halton Region, Ont
  5. York Region, Ont

I am actually kind of shocked by these results. I guess by all the headlines on this site and on other news programs I would have thought that Toronto would have ranked a lot higher. I still don't feel very safe though, no matter what this report says. Way to much crime here.

Historically, crime rates have always risen as you go from east to west in Canada.

And remember, these are crime rates calculated per capita, so actual crime occurrences will show a different picture as to what city/town is more dangerous.

Where is St John's newfoundland in all of this or has cbc forgotten that it is still a part of Canada

why did Kingston Ontario not make the list there have been no murders in this city in the last 10 to 11 years. I lived in Toronto for over 50 years and here in Kingston for 6 months and I fell much safer now.

I guess they call it the wild, wild, west for a reason.

On what were these figures based? If they were based on convictions, than the real figures may be several times higher because of all the devices in place in our justice system to protect the criminal and stop him or her from being convicted. If, however, they were based on charges laid by the police, than they would be more accurate and a better reflection of the number of crimes actually committed. Also, the situation in the US is much more complicated. That is because their state laws ammend federal laws to a far greater extent than ours do, and vary a great deal from state to state. Therefroe, if the US figures are based on convictions the rate for any city is likely to be statistically skewed by the laws of the state in which that city is located.

Data must be incorrect.
Cannot see Toronto not being number ONE for the most dangerous. Its become a lawless city. Wouldn't venture to Toronto under any circumstances.
