U.S. Democratic rivals Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. Hillary Clinton are trading barbs over a photo of Obama dressed in traditional local garments during a visit to Kenya in 2006.

The Associated Press photo, which is circulating on the Internet, shows Obama wearing a white turban and a wraparound white robe. The garments were given to him by elders in Wajir, in northeastern Kenya.

Obama, whose late father was Kenyan, visited the country in 2006.

The gossip and news website the Drudge Report posted the photograph Monday, claiming it was being circulated by "Clinton staffers."

Drudge also cited an email from an unidentified campaign aide but did not include evidence of the correspondence.

'Fear-mongering'

Obama, in an interview with WOAI radio in San Antonio, Texas, said voters are "saddened when they see these kind of politics."

"Everybody knows that whether it's me or Senator Clinton or Bill Clinton that when you travel to other countries they ask you to try on traditional garb that you have been given as a gift," he said. "The notion that the Clinton campaign would be trying to circulate this as a negative on the same day that Senator Clinton was giving a speech about how we repair our relationships around the world is sad."

Obama campaign manager David Plouffe accused Clinton's campaign of "the most shameful, offensive fear-mongering we've seen from either party in this election."

Clinton campaign manager Maggie Williams said the Obama campaign's reaction was inflaming passions and distracting voters.

"Enough," Williams said in a statement. "If Barack Obama's campaign wants to suggest that a photo of him wearing traditional Somali clothing is divisive, they should be ashamed. Hillary Clinton has worn the traditional clothing of countries she has visited and had those photos published widely.

"This is nothing more than an obvious and transparent attempt to distract from the serious issues confronting our country today and to attempt to create the very divisions they claim to decry."

However, Williams did not confirm nor deny whether any Clinton staffers had circulated the image.

"I just want to make it very clear that we were not aware of it, the campaign didn't sanction it and don't know anything about it," Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson said in a teleconference with reporters. "None of us have seen the email in question. If anybody has independent reporting that they've done on it I would welcome it."

Obama had been in Kenya two years ago to learn how tribes were organizing themselves, said retired Air Force Gen. Scott Gration, who accompanied the Illinois senator on the trip.

"And in the course of this, Senator Obama was given an outfit and as the guest that he was, the great guest, he took this outfit and they encouraged him to try some of it on," Gration told reporters in a teleconference. "It was a thing that we all do."

In December, two Clinton Iowa volunteers resigned after forwarding a hoax email that falsely said Obama is a Muslim possibly intent on destroying the United States.

Obama is a member of the United Church of Christ and says he has never been a Muslim, but false rumours continue to spread online.

Campaign trail

Hoping to derail Obama's campaign before primaries in Texas and Ohio next week, Clinton painted a picture of Obama as inconsistent in foreign policy.

"He wavers from seeming to believe that mediation and meetings without preconditions can solve some of the world's most intractable problems to advocating rash, unilateral military action without the cooperation of our allies in the most sensitive part of the world," Clinton said in a speech at The George Washington University on Monday.

Despite her tactics, the latest poll numbers show Obama has taken a clear lead over Clinton among white men, middle-income earners and liberals.

The Associated Press-Ipsos survey shows Clinton's poll numbers are collapsing since the last survey was taken two weeks ago.

The Illinois senator leads Clinton by 23 percentage points among white men and by 17 points among liberals - groups that were evenly divided between the two in early February.

Obama has a similar advantage among those earning US$50,000 to $100,000 annually -- whom she led earlier by 13 points.

Overall, Obama has 46 per cent to Clinton's 43 per cent, a virtual tie. Clinton had a slight 5 point lead nationally in early February.

The AP-Ipsos poll was conducted from Feb. 22-24 and involved telephone interviews with 1,011 adults nationally. The margin of sampling error was plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.

If this is the best ammunition against Obama then Clinton is simply shooting blanks.

Can there be anything more foolish than politicians tearing down their oponents in this manner?? I am proudly Canadian and tired of the wars, "conflicts" & US sponsored interference in the policies of other nations.
Mr Obama's wish for real leadership & policy change for the American people, along with his penchant for taking advice from new sources could really mean a huge step forward for the entire planet.
It is difficult to think that the American people do not jump at the chance to elect a government that does strive to employ the lies and treachery that we have seen practiced over the past 25 years.

This picture will arouse the surpressed fears of the majority of American voters. The future leadership of the USA is more critical now than it has ever been.

I honestly don't think the Clinton campaign would have released this photo, although that is possible. I'm more inclined to believe it's the Republican Party who put this out, in an effort to distract voters from real issues and instead using once again the politics of fear to drive voters to vote Republican.

This is what the GOP is arguing: "Obama's a Muslim, look he wears Muslim clothes, what could he be planning for America?"

If Americans are stupid enough to buy into this garbage, then they don't deserve to have a democracy.

More irrelevent news.

Obama is a Christian, but again so what. He would still be an extraordinary man if he were Muslim, Hindu or secular. Unfortunately the US is a country where only Christian can be elected to upper offices. Its sad to listen to all of the racial and religious drivel that goes on here. Otherwise its a great country to live in (which I do by choice).

He should be praised for doing that. People are too critical these days. What would you do in that situation? Respect for cultures and religions is paramount for leaders of other nations. They need to embrace them.

If you visit someone's home and their belief is to remove footwear at the door, do you remove them? Um...yeah.

He will have to grow a thicker skin than this. If he wins the nomination, the Republicans will "Swiftboat" him anyway. All part of politics in the states, part entertainment, part grandstanding, part ridiculous...

I guess that this is the best the Clinton team could come up with. Very sad, to use a photo like this to swade the American voter. What's wrong Hilary, could not find a stain on any of his clothing ?????.

Who cares how he is dressed, and does it matter if he is Muslim or not. I don't think so, perhaps the Media should find some real news to report

No surprise... the Clinton camp is trying to make Obama look odd, weird and not part of the mainstream and suggests they believe Americans - yes, even their own Democrat delegates - to be paranoid and racist. Its dirty politics at its worse and the Americans are the best in the World at it. This also suggests that the Clinton camp offers little except for the same old negative message used by mainstream politics which I would hope Americans are now sick of... if they can't see through this for what it is then that country is truely doomed and another - perhaps the EU - will need to fill the moral void as we head into this new century.

Really, is the media grasping at straws or what? This is such a non-issue!

"Oh no, a turban, the terrorists are coming!!!"

Publishing the photos wasn't the problem... it's these constant assumptions being made out of context.

The people making those are idiots who shouldn't be allowed to vote!

If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck..it's a duck.

There's just too much mystery behind Barack Hussein Obama to be take lightly. America is in critical need of leadership in a dangerous world right now.

Obama never explains his "change". What is else is he hiding from the public?

Obama has a shady past that just keeps catching up to him. He's very evasive about his brand of change for America. He just wants us to watch his music video and feel good. Oprah Winfrey wants people to put their trust in him because she has. Obama is like the Pied Piper, playing a sweet tune while he walks America to the edge of a clift while wearing rose coloured glasses.

The Democrats are running scared, what other so called dirty tricks are in their plans.....I am glad as a Canadian to see OBAMA in traditional clothes ..no different than Kennnedy going to Ireland in 1961,or our own blessed(tongue in cheek)MULRONEY singing "When Irish Eyes are Smiling"with Ronnie Regean...I hope the American people can see that the dynamtics of the world are changing...but unfortunately they are so narrow minded...I hope things are changing..nice to see Ralph NADER back in the fold...........Clinton is getting on my nerves..I would love to see a female president but not her..they have to change their money driven system...and that will take a miracle..oh I AM SO GLAD TO BE A CANADIAN...were not perfect ..but we are still a work in progress...

Since when is anything the Drudge Report says to be taken as being truth? get real people.
It seems more likely to me that the GOP is behind the photo's circulation, trying to show that Obama and Clinton can't work as a team. They merely fear an Obama/Clinton ticket (which would be pretty much unbeatable). Any kind of sand that they can throw in the gears of the Democrats would be welcome to them. Passing this off as "Dems attacking Dems" is superficial at best.

Hillary Clinton is done like dinner and she knows it. She's spun around from being honored just to share a stage with Obama last week to disgust and outrage with him over...whatever....this week.

This is why people don't like her -- she's as phony as a 3 dollar bill.

Anyone who takes that picture seriously wouldn't vote for Obama anyway and is probably a moron to begin with.

But then again, Hillary's core supporters are those with less education than Obama's, so....there ya go, she's preaching to the choir I guess.

Buh bye, Billary.

I think there is a line in the sand that the 'average' person just does not cross when it comes to political ads. Will this reach the height or should I say lows the Federal PC's suffered in the 1993 campaign after releasing ads making fun of Chretien's face? We'll see.

So Hillary Clinton doesn't like people circulation flyers about her stated positions on issues like NAFTA, but when it comes to trying to play on fears in the American public, it's ok. This is why Barack Obama would make a good President, he would unite the country and not further divide it. He is willing to meet with so called American enemies. Something I don't think Hillary is willing to do.

Mr Obama is evasive about his brand of change for America? Have I missed something? It seems to me he's been pretty clear about what he wants for his country. Mr. Obama has a shady past? EVERYONE has a shady past. Some are just worse than others. There's a very simple solution to the problem, if you don't want Barack Obama as President, don't vote for him.

Although it would be a damn shame if you didn't.

Not really foder for discussion, there will never be a black man elected President of the USA and as far as that goes, probably never a woman either. McCain has it hands down. Dirty politics is a way of life, both in the USA and Canada so I don't see why some of the posters seem outraged.

Hey Canuck for Obama, didn't you read the article. It said that two CLINTON VOLUNTEERS quit after posting the thing about Obama being Muslim. It had nothing to do with the Republicans. I guess it's too hard to admit that your precious Demoocrats could do anything like this, it had to be the nasty Republicans.

It's amazing to me that the American public would form an opinion based on a picture.

"Ask not what a politician looks like in a photograph...Ask what he can do for your country!"

Score one for the Clinton campaign. This photograph has already done the intended damage. People around the US and around the world are discussing whether Obama is a terrorist, and then the hint that just maybe it was the GOP that posted the photos. Perfect.

Anyone who has read Hillary Rodham Clinton's book will know and remember how the Republicans tried every which way but loose to attack Bill Clinton ... and I'm not talking about the Lewinsky incident ... anything to get rid of him cause they were scared and wanted power for themselves. Now they see that with President Bush's performance, they don't stand a chance of the presidency so they will start again. Whether it's against Obama or Hillary it won't matter just as long as their candidate gets in. Their tactic is democrat against democrat. What will they do next if Obama and Hillary stick together as a team? I personally wish them both well and whoever comes out as the nominee for the Democratic party will do a great job if elected President. Democrats have always done a better job for the USA and the world while in office than Republicans have in the past.

The Clinton Camp is on the run. Go Obama! It is also customary to show respect when in the attendance of Jewish events to wear a yamika. The Clinton Camp is smart to just display the picture and not accuse him of anything. They are hoping that the ignorance of the american people will sway their oppinion.

I hope Hilary doesnt burn that bridge too badly. The world would change for the good with a black president and woman vice. Even the other way, we have 4 yrs of stability coming.

So what? Nothing more than Clinton knowing she is going to lose and lose big to man of character, charisma and true leadership.

This does nothing more than play on the inherent racism in the west by those that buy into the fear industry surrounding the lies of terror.

Start with a real investigation of 9/11 that millions of people are demanding and we will have a truly different picture of everyone who was involved with that horrible day.

Really, should it not be more disturbing that current members of the US administration have been photograhped when arming Hussein with weapons and gas in the 80s?

In reality, the US administration has now killed more people than Hussein - who are the real monsters.

This is for Canuck For Obama:

I doubt that the GOP is behind this smear: It's most likely the venal Clinton campaign. Even Dick Morris says that they play the race card to get ahead.

It also makes more sense that it came from Hillary. The GOP would rather have McCain run against Obama as the 'white' candidate and scoop up the votes of older voters who are less racially accepting. I think that you need to face up to the fact that the Democrats fight dirty too.

DW - "does it matter if he is Muslim or not?"

Yes DW, it does. Indeed it does. No muslim will ever be a President of the USA. Not after 9/11.

As a savvy statesman Mr. Obama might have displayed a little more sensitivity to the families of those who were murdered by Muslim terrorists on 9/11. This just shows a serious lack of judgement on his part.

If any other presidential candidate were to wear a turban the knives would be out. Why not for Obama?

Barack is not Muslim nor Catholic. He belongs to a Christian Black Power Church though, which has Louis Farrakahn (Nation of Islam) drooling at the mouth. Interesting thing is that after Farrakahn all but endorsed Obama, MSNBC ripped it out of the headlines with virtually no trace of it left on their website. Makes you wonder........although in fairness to Obama, he wasn't too thrilled with the "endorsement" either - for obvious reasons.
