The Australian high commissioner to Canada said the country remained a top destination for Aussie tourists despite a government website that warned visitors should "exercise caution."

William Fisher said Canada still ranks as the top "dream destination" for Australian tourists. More than 200,000 Australians visit Canada each year.

"People vote with their feet and their money," William Fisher told CTV Newsnet on Friday. "If you go to Whistler these days, you're hard pressed to find a Canadian."

An Australian government website lists Canada as a country where travellers need to be cautious about terrorism, dangerous winter driving and cold weather conditions.

The 'Smart Traveller' website, run by Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, lists Chile, South Korea and Latvia as countries safer than Canada.

Overall, Canada is listed in the second safest category (out of five categories) on the website -- the 'Exercise caution' section. Out of the G8 nations, the U.S., U.K, France, Germany and Italy also are listed in the 'Exercise caution' category.

"We advise you to exercise caution and monitor developments that might affect your safety in Canada because of the risk of terrorist attack," says the travel advisory.

"Pay close attention to your personal security and monitor the media for information about possible new safety or security risks."

Fisher said the terrorist threat warning is not specific to Canada, and has been posted for about three years.

"The warning is a general one for all western countries, and it followed some quite nasty statements by al Qaeda," Fisher said. "Poor old Canada is, just like the rest of us, a western country."

The website also warns that "heavy snowfalls and ice in the winter" can make driving dangerous.

"The wind-chill factor can also create dangerously cold outdoor conditions," says the warning.

Fisher, who lives in Ottawa, told CTV Newsnet he enjoys the winter but is somewhat jealous of Toronto's weather, which he jokingly referred to as Canada's "subtropical south."

Avalanches, earthquakes, and fires

Meanwhile, B.C. and Alberta are both listed as being subject to avalanches. B.C. is also listed as "an active earthquake zone."

Travellers heading to Canada between May and September are also told to look out for tornadoes in some areas.

The website further warns about bush and forest fires which "can occur any time in Canada."

The advisory says crime in Canada is comparable to that in Australia, with petty crime such as pick pocketing and street theft occurring at tourist destinations and hotels.

Japan has the safest ranking of the G8 nations, falling into the first category, 'Be alert to own security.' Russia is listed as the most dangerous of the G8 countries, ranking in the third category -- 'High degree of caution.'

On the website for Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada, there is no official warning for Australia. However, travellers are advised to watch out for pickpockets and to avoid demonstrations because they could "turn violent."

There are also warnings for backpackers about attacks and travellers are advised not to accept food and drinks from strangers at bars.

I think the Australian government shoud do a bit more research before they list Canada as a dangerous country. I hope Mexico and Cuba were on that list.

As for the heavy snow and ice.. it's called winter..occurs every year.. lasts 4-5 months.. and then magically disappears again.. nothing to worry about.. its normal... *just shakes head*..

If people really knew what it was like here in Canada they would all want to live here...so let them think that we have bad weather and therefore should not have a great Canadian experience when they do come here to visit...by far we are the safest and friendliest place to be.

Where do they get their information, I always thought Canada was a good place to visit. I have traveled too many places in this world, and people always tell me that Canada is a nice place to visit, people are friendly, and they love coming here, esp: the Americans.
So I don't know what these people are talking about. It is comments like this that can be damaging , and do harm to the tourist industry, in which so many provinces depend on (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, B.C. etc..)

I have to admit I laughed my head off when I read this!

Travellers should excise caution because of ''heavy snow and ice''?? D'uh!! What are they thinking; that Canadians live in a dangerous zone??? I just find it funny that (looking through their eyes) our life expectancy is pretty much the same as their despite these ''dangerous conditions''.

If countries started emitting warnings based on weather conditions, Canadians should then excise caution when travelling to the US because of tornadoes, or to Australia because of fires or any coast line at all for tsunamis!

As a joke, I feel like writing to our Prime Minister asking him to recall our ambassador!!

Hahaha, we should put a warning on our website about all the oppressive heat down under, and the poisonous animals with silly names that can "attack at any time"!! :P

So Canada is dangerous because "heavy snow" can "erupt at any time" - but Australia which has crocodiles, sharks, cobras, and spiders-the-size-of-your-head, (not to mention its terrorist threat b/c of its participation in Iraq)- is still considered totally safe.
Hmm.

travel advisory to Australia: be advised of kangaroos that can bound out of the outback without notice, terrorizing your touring experience. Canadians are advised to bring taser guns to protect themselves. Travellers are also advised against shark attacks when swimming in known dangerous waters! Hot weather can arise unexpectedly and cause harmful effects!

WOW Just when I thought the news could not possibley be any more entertaining :)

Well I have been in 4 tornadoes here in Ontario (including the Barrie one 20 yr ago) and they are AMAZING. scary but amazing!

I LOVE a really intense blizzard / snow squall... though they should put out a warning against 'shovelling snow' too in my opinion.

I LOVE the really intense thunder storms in the summer.

Why did they not tell them about BLACKFLIES.

OH OH OH and what about the MOST DANGEROUS ANIMAL IN CANADA - THE MOOSE :)

When you hit one of those suckers with your Ford Focus you know it!!! Poor car :(

Thanks Australia for the bast laugh I have had this morning! and I thought is was dangerous for me to go the Egypt - WOW! I don't even have to leave my own country to get a thrill!

I think that more Auzzies will wnat to come here now to experience all these amazing thrills! After all till you have experienced a tornado you just don't know what an adrenaline surge it when you see houses and trees and cars all torn up and twisted and mangled....

After so many terrorist attacks our country has been devastated. We live in a post 9-11 world where they may strike anytime, a forest fire can pop out of anywhere and a block of ice can fall on anyone at anytime and place. Let's see now...Australia has poisonous snakes, reptiles, and plants. Brush fires, tsunamis, oppressive heat and drought. If you dont have eyes in the back of your head you may just not make it through one guided tour! There are snakes and reptiles that would like nothing better than to eat you...and don't forget the kangaroos that are everywhere scaring the crap out of you. You have a very high terrorist alert also because of their involvement in Iraq. If all I have to worry about in Canada is the snow, ice and the wind chill, I'll take it. Oh, don't forget about the fires in the summer, which most of them are caused by careless campers. When was the last earthquake? 1932? Do we even have any poisonous animals or flora here in Canada, other than Poison Ivy?
As for the terrorism issue, I think they got their information wrong...that was the U.S dear, get your information straight. In short, I think if that is the way they believe our country to be, then they should stay home, and I feel bad for them in their ignorance. Canada is the best country in the world!

Calm down everyone. If Australia rated itself on that list I’m sure it would be in the same category as us. They are just warning their citizens to be (overly) cautious when travelling. We fall into the same category as the UK, France and the US. Of course in most areas of those countries travel is perfectly safe, but things can happen and people should be cautious and use common sense. It is not a slight on our country to point out the ways it is different from theirs and highlight dangers their citizens might not be aware of. I highly doubt it would have any effect on tourism. As for terrorism, the site says terrorism is a threat throughout the world. I don’t think they’re singling out Canada. They’re just being overly cautious. Canada rates Australia, the US, UK and France as “Exercise Normal Security Precautions” so I guess we are less paranoid than Australia, but probably equally safe.

Just goes to show you that no matter what we think about ourselves perceptions around the world about us are VERY different!

I think if Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is going to have a "Smart Traveller Website" then they should hire a smart traveller to run it. Whoever is doing it now seems a little stunned. Let’s look at who they rated "safer" than Canada: Chile, which has a serious guerrilla insurgency problem and didn’t a couple of bus loads of tourists go over a cliff a two separate occasions this past year? Oh yeah there was that murdered Canadian cyclist too; South Korea which has the worlds most unpredictable and maniacal dictator in the world next door to them who threatens to invade them on a daily basis; Japan that sits on the worlds most active earthquake fault line and Latvia that has the highest crime rate per capita in Western Europe. As for terrorist attacks, I wonder if Bali Indonesia rates higher than Canada as a recommended holiday destination?

Hello people...everything (with the exception of the threat of terrorist attacks) in that article is true. There were at least 7 people killed in avalanches in BC/Alberta this year already. There are many forest fires in Canada every year. Also, read the news about how many terrible winter storms that Atlantic Canada gets every year...and how many people die in those snow storms...7 kids and 1 teacher in NB just a few weeks ago...which I'm sure you all remember! Tornadoes occur in the prairies every summer, they just aren't particularly newsworthy most of the time because they occur in very remote areas. Petty crime in large urban areas is quite common. You can't dispute the truth of many of these claims.

If you go onto the Government of Canada's website, you'll find a travel advisory for every country in the world, telling you of all of the precautions that you should be taking while travelling in a foreign country. We do it too! You should read the advisory on this website for the United Arab Emirates (where I lived for 2 years - one of the safest countries in the world, in my opinion). It is overly precautious mantioning terrorist attacks, bad driving conditions, etc, etc, etc.

I think that countries just want to tell their citizens of all of the unsafe conditions that are possible in foreign countries. Before you criticize the article, please at least read if before you consider it an attack on our country.

I forgot about the Moose! They really do a number on your car, but they would never try to eat you! Don't forget about the big-horned sheep in the rockies! Oh no, a traffic jam because here we wait for animals to cross the road! Whereas the Aussies only run over the animals, and then complain about the damage to the paint job. More Koalas and Kangaroos are killed by motorists every year, than by any other means. How many deer and Moose suffer that fate here in comparison? I'm sure not as many.

If you actually go to the site and read the entries, Canada is hardly being singled out as dangerous. There's an entry for practically every country out there, and it's clearly advice for travelers rather than a warning to stay away. Sheesh, people, stop making mountains out of molehills.

Brad B
said

Check the website: "We advise you to exercise caution and monitor developments that might affect your safety in Canada because of the risk of terrorist attack." This is the same line as is used in all the countries participating in the war on terror (that I checked, anyway). The website also states that this is advice, offered with the help of the US, UK, and CANADIAN consulates, and is NOT a warning (although obviously the media sees it that way...) The category is not due to weather/disasters, but the risk of terrorism, which is the same in most of the G8 countries. Granted the website is somewhat misleading (for all countries...) but they don't say not to travel here, as they do for other countries.

-extreme flooding zones in New South Wales & Queensland

-extreme drought in 8th consecutive year

Or maybe stung by those small but deadly jellyfish? If they wanna stereotype..Im purdy sure we can all come up with something while sitting around waiting for BC to eurpt in flames or be buried in an avalanche...and not to mention Ontario...Last time I checked..there was common knowledge about winter conidtions.

Everything listed is WAY off base especially the terrorist comments.

Canada has never even had a terrorist attack?! It is much more likely that Australia would get attacked due to it's proximity to various countries in the east.

This web site was obviously started by the previous government. Got to make sure to control people through fear right?! Right out of the playbook.

brian
said

This is the nature of government advice.

Thus the US State Department warning for Canada includes "Although criminal activity in Canada is more common in urban areas, violent crimes such as murder, armed robbery and rape can occur throughout the country. Visitors to large cities should be aware that parked cars are regularly targeted for opportunistic smash-and-grab thefts, and they are cautioned to avoid leaving any possessions unattended in a vehicle, even in the trunk. Due to the high incidence of such crimes, motorists in Montreal, Vancouver and some other jurisdictions can be fined for leaving their car doors unlocked or for leaving valuables in view."

The UK Foreign Commonwealth Office... "There is an underlying threat from terrorism. Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers. The Canadian authorities have carried out a number of arrests as a result of investigations into terrorist networks. "

Erring on the side of caution is what all governmental advice, including that of the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs, tends to do.

There is really useful information offered by these sources but you should understand, and allow for, the over cautious nature of these agencies.

Those comments are funny to Canadians but you have to remember very few people outside Canada know much about us. We are a well-kept secret. Our colonial inferiority complex has made us too humble and we don't know or celebrate or many contributions to the world (i.e. inventions like the first lightbulb, electronic keyboard, zipper-the list is very long). Until we make more noise about ourselves, you can expect hilarious perceptions about us from outsiders. You can't blame them.

If you were half a world away, reading all the negative media reports you might draw the same conclusions. We arrested a bunch of terrorists in Toronto, we have the BCCLU and AI openly supporting the welfare of Taliban prisoners, you have the left saying get out of Afghanistan now (a war where the Austrailians are participating).

We report on accidents, police being murdered four at a time and singly. Every radical with a cause is a headline.

You reap what you plant and it has come home to roost. Our country is being changed from within as the Charter of Rights and Freedoms replaces common sense and decency as the standard. The only winners in this scenario are radicals and lawyers.

The people who comment on this story should get out more.

I skied Big White (B.C.) this month. Almost every employee was from Australia. It's a very popular place for them. Early January, an avalanche killed a person from Australia and injured others.

Many Canadians are killed in winter traffic accidents due to stupidity, inexperience, or simply harsh driving conditions. Australians don't experience this, so their government warns them of it.

Every summer, people die in climbing accidents in the Rockies. You guessed it, it's often a tourist who had no idea what he was doing.

Australians don't have a lead role in Afghanistan and therefore are less likely to face retaliation from a terrorist act.

Thefts occur extremely often in Canadian hotels and from cars parked in tourist locations.

More people are killed by handguns in Canada than in Japan and other similar countries.

I wonder if Australia has a Young Offenders Act like the Liberals cursed us with??

But you're right... let's keep our head in the sand about all the things we experience in our own country instead of taking steps to fix it.

An entertaining article, but before you criticise the advisory, read it.

1."Heavy snowfalls and ice in the winter can make driving dangerous" - True, 100 car pile-up near Toronto blamed on whiteout conditions occurred Sunday;
2. "The wind-chill factor can also create dangerously cold outdoor conditions." - We wear our toques, scarves, and gloves that grandma made for a reason;
3. "B.C. and Alberta are both listed as being subject to avalanches."- True, as I learned on my Avalanche Rescue course I took in Alberta;
4. "The province of British Columbia in western Canada is in an active earthquake zone." - From Natural Resources Canada webpage, "It is this squeezing of the crust that causes the 300 or so small earthquakes that are located in southwestern British Columbia each year..."

As a very proud Canadian, let's make sure we understand the facts/statements before jumping to conclusions. Have a great weekend!!

The site from what I gathered is nothing more than a travel advisory. Warning of possible conditions and when taken in context I can see being helpful. I mean if your traveling from Australia I would think it would be nice to know you should pack winter clothing and avoid renting your own vehicle if your not used to winter driving. The report also states BC is in an active earthquake zone yes, but a few paragraphs below it mentions 'IF' a natural disaster occurs to follow the advise of local authorities. Which again would be helpful for someone traveling from a different country. I did get a good kick out of the article when I first read it though so thanks for that.

People:

You need to read what they have written on this website. It isn't as bad as you think. It is something that any responsible government would do. There are many weather conditions in Canada that are not experienced by many other countries and those citizens need to be aware.

As someone who has travelled to Australia frequently over the last couple of years, I find this statement surprising because of its inaccuracy and it narrow focus. Should Canada issue out its own travel advisory, Australia recently experienced its own destructive bush fires which devastated Kangaroo Island, they experience extensive restrictions on water and it's home to many varieties of poisonous snakes, spiders and aquatic species ?????

John
said

I agree this is all a bit excessive, but...has anyone read the travel advisories Canada puts out on other 1st world countries? They are exactly the same. This really is not news, and I'd be shocked if this affects any Australians decision to visit!

Australia, like Canada, wisely warns it's people about any potential dangers while travelling. Ice and snow kill a lot of people in Canada each year...I think if I were visiting here, I'd like to be warned about this too!!

As for terrorism, forest fires, dangerous wildlife, etc...it's a stretch, but you can't blame them for mentioning it. These things CAN happen, and have happened in Canada. Better to err on the side of caution.

Earthquakes on the other hand...really now...

What I want to know then, if Canada is so dangerous because of ice & snow why then are 99.9% of the staff of all our ski resorts Aussies? Obviously, they don't read their own gov't websites! I have been to Australia, never saw any snakes or spiders as big as your head but I knew they were there just the same. What I did get out of the Land down under was a case of severe sunstroke which has turned into a pre-cancerous growth on my right shoulder after all this time. I'll stay home in the "danger zone" thank you very much!

BE WARNED!

I'm surprised they didn't issue a "watch for falling igloo blocks" or "look out for hungry polar bears" warning.

I think we should send out a warning against travel to Australia...

like...

"Danger - Russell Crowe had a beer at this hotel - Watch for flying fists!"

or...

"Beware of overly tanned Sheilas - They can be slippery when wet"

I just love stereotypes...Ignorance IS bliss ;)

I don't know, I think the Aussies have it right. I certainly need to "exercise caution" during what seems like a neverending winter. Icy roads, TONS of snow, whiteout conditions, -30 Celsius. I mean, Southern Ontario and Vancouver/Victoria aren't bad, but crap, the winter lasts FOREVER in almost every other part of this country. And it SUCKS!!!! To somebody from the sunny climes of Australia who is not used to it, yeah, these things probably do constitute things to watch out for.

Of course, who god's name would want to leave Australia to come to Canada, anyway? We don't have anything.

It is really obvious that most of these comments are from people that only read part of a "newspaper article" and do no research of their own. Wake up Canada, don't show your ignorance by jumping to all sorts of conclusions. Read the web sites of other Countries when they ADVISE travellers. NOT warn them.

The chance of a terrorist attack in Canada is about as likely as a serial fatality attack caused by a herd of wallabies in Australia.

I hope Canada's Foreign Affairs Office issues an advisory bulletin warning about Australian ignorance and paranoia.

Terrorism!?... as if Australia is'nt a target of Al Queda and about every crackpot in that region! We should issue a similar travel advisory on Australia,.. severe hot weather and drought will kill you even faster than cold - break down in the desert mid-day without water and you can be dead within a couple of hours. Also they have the most poisonous snakes and spiders in the world. You can get stung by lethal box jelly fish or get chewed up by a shark when swimming not to mention becoming a snack for some huge Croc. in the north by just standing near a river bank, etc, etc. Flash floods, bush fires.
If you plan a visit down under better watch out mate! :-P

As far as concerns what I think of Australia, can one say anything flattering about a continent that was originally a penal colony populated by banished English criminals? Over the years, Australia has evolved its own unique breed of rednecks.

I think Australia should really check out the facts.. yes there is bad winter driving conditions here but if you're careful, you're safe... I've not heard of any tornado's in the 6 years I've been here so that's a surprise, but I'm Australian!! I know you can eaten by a shark, stung by jellyfish, get melanomas from the sun, killed by spiders and kicked to death by kangaroos.... I'd say that's a pretty dangerous place to be really!!! Maybe Canada should add Australia to their too dangerous list! Ha!

Crikey! Although our winters do indeed pack a nasty wollop at least I run no risk of having me chazry severed by a bloody dangerous croc or bitten by one of those King Brown snakes that like to wazzabee in me sock drawer at night. Bloody buggers....

Surprisingly these comments are coming from Australia! Trying to downplay how great our country is, eh, and squash our tourism? Frankly, I do smell a rat. There are opening bids for the Commonwealth Games, soccer's World Cup, Aboriginal Youth Games, World Expo, etc. So, if you notice each time Canada makes a bid to host an event, Australia is there too with theirs.
Good luck to all when Australia wins the next bid. Remember to wear your rubber boots to avoid being bitten by dangerous wild animals! Pity the track and field runners! *shakes head*

This falls under a catch 22. In order to be put back under it's good graces and to meet Austraila's highly cautious travel requirements, Canada would have to change it's foreign policy. It would have to include no more going to war for our bestest friend, America (the reason we are on the list in the first place), and no more accepting Israel's enemies as our enemies. But since Canada has been forced into freetrade agreements with America and having to do our business strictly with American companies and it's overlord investors, the end result would be a shift in wealth and welfare toward Canada. Our beloved country would suffer for not being seen as "towing the line". Considering the events we have all witnessed in the last week, (with torture lists and such),it all makes once very suspicious as to where the game plan is taking us. It reads like blackmail to me.

I think Canada needs to officially warn Canadians to steer clear of Australia for the following reasons:

Blue Ringed Octopus – poisonous

Blow Flies – these can be a real nuisance in parts of the country, especially when you are trying to eat your food

Bush Fires can erupt “at any time”

Coral Reefs – you could hurt your feet on these

Coriolis Forces – think of what damage this may be doing to your body

Crocodiles - usually are deadly

Friendly – they are just too darned friendly

Floods and Droughts can erupt “at any time”

Heat Stroke – their summers are just too darned hot

Intimidation – they are generally just too darned healthy and too sporty

Isolation – they are just too darned far away from the rest of the world

Jellyfish - can be deadly

Kangaroos – these can be a road hazard

Koalas – these are constantly in a drugged state and can be unpredictable

Language – they are sometimes too difficult to understand

Sharks – they lost a Prime Minister to one

Snakes – they have more varieties of poisonous snakes than anywhere else in the world

Spiders – poisonous spiders are very common in semi-urban areas

Terrorism – remember that Australia is in Iraq with the United States

UV Radiation Exposure – they have too many clear sunny days

Vegemite – have you ever tried this stuff!

Water – they don’t have enough water for their population without imposing severe water restrictions

You really are risking your life when you got there mate.

People, settle down! It's just a government website covering all areas of a country and conditions so it's citizens are informed when they travel to that country. I'm Australian and have been living in BC for 2 months and I love it here - and so do all the other Aussies I know. Aussie's and Canadian's are very similar in culture and humour. Australian's love Canada and Canadian people, you guys have nothing to worry about!

for example:

Be careful lighting fires - be aware of how easily bushfires start.

In northern Australia be aware there are crocodiles in the water. Watch for warning signs

I mean COME ON NOW!

Why are so many Aussies immigrating here??? I was on a cruise, which had a huge number of Aussies on it, and found them to be rude, so maybe we had better issue a travel advisory against Australia for rudeness. I have met some who live here that are very nice people.

Chris

Whats the big deal? It's all common sense, all true... BC is in an earthquake zone, you can get wild fires, tornadoes do break out in the praries, the winters can be cold and harsh and cause inconvienience... It seems common sense for someone here, but its a totally different place for someone that has lived in Hobart for their whole life. I'm sure there are many warning for Canadians about the snakes and crocs that run wild through Australian's cities...Better wear boots and long pants unless you want to get bitten by a brown snake!

Ian says - "I have family who wiil not come to Canada because they perceive Canadians to be arrogant, dishonest and unreliable when supporting allies. Maybe they are right."

Sounds like you and your family are pretty ignorant of the facts. Australia has a token force in Iraq in a safe region, while Canada is shouldering most of NATO's burden of fighting in the south of Afghanistan. I would say Canada is very reliable when supporting allies, and the UK, US, and the Dutch would agree.
Perhaps you were thinking of the French and Italians who are frolicking in the North of Afghanistan while Canadians are dying in the South.
And you say Canadians are unreliable in supporting Allies?
We don't need your family here.

They forgot to add watch out for falling trees taken down by hungry beavers.

Craig

What is wrong with you people. The website should add "Beware of spiteful, arrogant, sarcastic Canadians".

This was a simple heads up to tourists. No where does it say "Stay away from Canada". Besides, everything listed here is true. Now, before you come up with another hundred comments stating how dangerous Australia is, think about it. Why would the Australians post a list of why not to visit Australia?

Also, if you read the ENTIRE article, you would note that Canada is listed in the second safest category. The only warning is to exercise caution, which is what all tourists should be doing.

Adam
said

Warning, if you plan to visit Australia, beware of Kangaroos, they may kick you when least expected. Earthquakes? Canada has only had one reported death from one and it was in the 1700's. Australia has had the most deaths by sharks in the world. Their weather can cause death from heatstrokes as much as ours can from the cold and heat. Yes we get snow along with 50 other countries. Australia is at a greater risk of terrorism than Canada due to them being in iraq. Sick of Canada being known for Polar Bears, Igloos, Snowshoes. Obviously who posted that has never visited our Great Country.

Jimmy Packer
said

No Worries, Mate! If I know Australians, the warning is the best advertising Canada could have! Aussies love a challenge! Little things like Forest fires, avalanches and terrorism are not enough to deter them!

Becky
said

Pardon me but all those "warnings" really should be changed to "People don't act stupid and ignore warnings issued by the authorities"

I mean really, people die in avalanches 95% of the time because they ignore the warnings that snow pacts are unstable, people die in car crashes in the winter because they don't drive according to conditions 98% of the time so really people need to be less stupid.

Any country in the world today has dangers but quite frankly I'm not leaving Canada because no where else seems better - this is a great country and we should all be proud of it, the good the bad and the ugly - at least we can change the bad and ugly with our votes many countries don't even have that luxury that we consider a right.

Meg
said

Every country needs to be overly cautious with the travel warnings they issue for other countries...in the same way the that corporations warn you the coffee you're drinking is going to be hot.

I've traveled to South America, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Half the people I meet in my travels are Aussies. They don't scare easily. And if I believed half the travel warnings issued by Canada, I'd do nothing but cower in my apartment.

John

did they mean gang related shootings in Canada or were they serious about terrorist attacks?

Steve from Australia

Oh man dont Canadians get all defensive when our government departments make some idiotic claims.
Im sure that Canadian gov dept have made many errors and fudged the truth in the past for a good (although funny) read.
Yes its true in Australia we have some real nasty critters, like snakes, spiders and sharks etc but the last time i checked, no one i know lived in the ocean and we have less than one shark attack per year. Not too many people live in the arid areas where all the snakes are either and i cant remember the last time someone died of a snake bite or spider bite. And no, unfortunately as one Canadian has mentioned in his comments, we dont have Cobras in Australia.
So i propose this.... Stop reading and believing everything in the media. Most Aussies love Canadians....Its the Yanks we hate!

Stu Morrison

migawd..a warning from Australia about hazards in Canada!
This from the country that harbours the longest list of dangerous snakes and insects in the world. The most deadly snakes live in Australia; the most deadly sat the beachpiders live in Australia; if you don't become a crispy critter in the oven that is the Outback, you step on a blue spotted octopus and died in minutes
Yup; there are more critters in the Land of Ozz, just waiting to take yer life!
I'll take snow, cold and the "threats" of terrorists any day!

Based on the 106 (!) comments posted so far, I'd say people are just a tad over-sensitive. We are in the same category as the U.K., France, Germany and Italy. Are we really so dramatically safer than those places? I wonder if there are 106 Brits or Germans who are wringing their hands with as much angst as I read here.....

As an Aussie who has lived near Toronto for nearly 5 years I find this quite amusing. I better not go outside or an avalanche might fall on me. That's just typical of Australia, they have their heads in the sand. After all you wouldn't travel in the middle of Australia in the summer without caution with regard to the extreme heat and all the nasties, snakes, spiders, scorpions etc.

Obviously the travel warning about CANADA was written by some govenment official in Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade who's either NEVER been to Canada, or doesnt have the mental capacity to do adequate research into writing reports about places they obviously have no clue about!

Beware the ice and snow in the winter! HA Then why is it that all those Aussies from down under work in the mountain ski resorts of BC and Alberta??? Imagine them taking their lives in their hands just to get there! And the only thing you hear in the lift lines is NO WORRIES, not EH?

Good on ya mates!

I have lived in Canada all my 67 years. I have heard of a very few tornados and only a couple of deaths from them, but I've never seen one. I have never encountered a venomous snake and we have never had a terrorist attack. Could it be that the Aussies have us confused with the US. This advisory is laughable. A better warning would be about avalanches, to skiiers who ski out of bounds in BC

The Australian department of foreign affairs and trade really needs to pull their collective heads out. Canada is about as dangerous as... well Austrialia!
Being a northern hemisphere country, and a quater of the country with sizable mountains, there is a tendenace for avalanches to occur. These don't discriminate and kill Canadians as well as Australians, unfortunately. The other big killer- of trees- are forest fires. Something the Aussies have ample knowledge of, since most of the eastern country is ablaze every year!
Terrorism? Canada? Are you having a laugh? Even the Americans had to swallow humble pie when when it was discovered they were attacked by people who immigration allowed into the country.
The head of FA and T should put her/ his mouth in neutral prior to blurting out such rubbish. I expected better form them.
