It's called "The Most Terrifying Video You'll Ever See" and while it's not a horror movie, it is rather disturbing. And it's sweeping the Internet.

The YouTube video is actually a 10-minute lecture on global warming, delivered by Oregon high school science teacher Greg Craven. It may sound preachy, but it's hugely popular and has generated millions of hits on multiple websites.

Craven delivers the low-tech, video treatise from his home in Monmouth, Ore., armed with a black marker and a whiteboard.

He methodically argues that the debate over whether humans caused global warming is moot; instead, Craven says, "the risk of not acting far outweighs the risk of acting."

The film bears plenty of similarities to Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth" but Craven argues that Gore didn't go far enough in his film, noting that the way the globe is heading because of climate change will make "Gore look like a sissy Pollyanna with no guts who sugarcoated the bad news."

Craven says at its worst, climate change could bring droughts, famine, floods, dust bowls, economic collapse and the displacement of millions. He concedes that the policy changes that are needed to counter global warming will be economically painful. But he insists that the costs of maintaining the status quo will be worse.

After Craven posted his homemade video on YouTube back in June, it did exactly what he hoped it would do: it went "viral."

Thousands of people clicked on the catchy title then forwarded it on to their friends, until more than 4 million people had viewed it. It now ranks among the most popular videos in YouTube's news and politics category.

Craven told Canada AM that he felt compelled to make the video after he learned how desperate the environmental situation is.

"I knew a lot of the science already, so it just took someone showing me how the puzzle pieces fit together for me to come out with this daunting sense of dread of how things are going to be different," the soft-spoken teacher said.

"This is not just another environmental issue. This may eat our lunch. This is fundamentally different because in a complex system like the climate, there may be tipping points where irreversible damage is done, but you don't see it until it's too late to do something about it. That's what really has motivated me."

Not surprisingly, the video has also generated lots of reaction -- and plenty of it is critical. Craven says he listened to those arguments and then prepared his rebuttal.

"I got 7,000 critical comments. I sorted through those and as a result of those refined my argument and produced 'How It All Ends,' which patches the holes in 'The Most Terrifying Video You'll Ever See'," he says.

"It's a 10-minute video but it's a complex issue."

Craven says "How It All Ends" links to an additional six hours of explanatory videos to bolster his argument.

"It wasn't supposed to be like that. It sort of exploded on me," he laughs.

In the videos, Craven tries to keep it light by wearing goofy hats and setting chemicals on fire in a lab to demonstrate his points.

Craven says it took him months to produce the 44-part package, so he sent his wife, Jodi, and their two daughters to visit relatives for a week at a time, while he survived on takeout and energy drinks as he produced the videos.

All that intensive work -- and terrible eating -- eventually got to him. He had to visit the emergency room when he began experiencing chest pains. The doctors there told him to reduce his stress level and take it easy.

Craven says he's now feeling much better and has reduced his teaching hours to part-time so he can spend more time with his family. He's also considiring writing a book about all he has learned.

I have seen this video, and although compelling, his argument is flawed. There are also many videos, albeit paradies, that contradict his findings, and are just as compelling. One must see both sides of a story/argument, to draw an educated conclusion/opinion - whatever that may be.

I've watched this video and I like this guy or his creative ways of getting the msg out there. The unfortunate part is that we still don't care because most of us are ignorant to the fact of what we are doing.

You have got to be kidding mate, the other side has no evidence. I still can't believe people are still confused about the evidence. It's absolutely baffling!
Global warming has been caused by our CO2 emissions and we must reduce our emissions.

No matter what video comes out that is about global warming there will aways be fools that can't believe that 6.6 billion people on this planet can't have a effect.
We act like locust to this planet. There are still so many selfish people unwilling to give up their selfish ways. Money and material goods will always cloud many minds.

Good video and good argument.

First time a "doomsayer" actually did it in a reasonably clear way.

Hopefully, it will draw the right type of atention and not panic methods like the Kyoto accord. IF we are to change our ways (and we should) then everyone should as well. Do not exclude growing and third world countries.

The argument always comes out in one of two ways:
1. It's too economically devastating to do anything about it.
2. The earth is in a cycle and this has happened before.

To address these issues, I offer this.
Economically devastating, maybe, but if we DON'T do anything, what are we leaving our children? And yes the earth has had its cycles before, but this fast, and this widespread? I dont think so. There was a mini ice age in the 1700's, the critics will argue, but this is happening way faster. The earth does not change the weather in one lifetime.
It's too big, and too complicated for that to happen...yet here we are, and its happening. Are we the root cause? I am not a scientist, so I do not know, but I do know that we certainly are not helping the matter.
People, wake up. We have only one planet and we are helping to destroy it. When is everyone going to realise this?

Yeah James...I'm baffled by people who still use that second argument. A little research reveals the facts.

In a natural warming cycle, it will take 1000 years for nature (volcanoes, lightning caused forest fires etc) to increase the CO2 content of the atmosphere by 30 PPM.

Mankind has accomplished that in the last 17 years!!!!!!!

With a current CO2 content approaching 400 PPM, the planet should have entered the cooling phase (which is why we believed that in the 70s when we approached 300 PPM - the maximum CO2 content the atmosphere has seen in the last million years as proven by ice core samples). But instead of cooling, the planet continues to warm at an alarming rate.

People who don't want to see the truth will come up with any explanation - I've heard people say Pinatubo caused global warming (which is foolish considering volcanoes contribute less than 200 million tonnes of CO2 a year...compared to 22 BILLION tonnes that is contributed by mankind). I've heard people say ocean level rise is caused by the tides!!! Another said ocean level measurements taken by a stick 150 years ago hasn't changed so that GCC isn't happening. The lunacy of these arguments is ridiculous.

When it comes down to it, it is people who simply are too lazy or too selfish to reduce their consumption of energy. Disturbing.

I'm sorry, but global warming is the biggest hoax in history. There is no global warming. There's trends. In the 70's everyone was predicting another ice age. Scientists were advocating burning more methane & fossil fuels to keep the planet from freezing. Global warming is a scam. The video on Youtube is just another exercise in the ignorant preaching to the uninformed.

For over five billion years the planet has warmed up and cooled down all on its own. Twenty thousand years ago Ontario was under a sheet of ice. A million years ago there was no ice in the Arctic. The planet will continue to warm up and cool down all on its own.

The time has come for Canadians to wake up and realize that we only produce 2% of the world’s greenhouse gases. For Canada to cut that in half would mean turning out the lights and leaving the car in the garage. Last time I checked Canadians were not willing to do this. Instead of wasting billions on the global warming myth we should use that money to clean up our lakes and rivers and other such environmental problems.

To Frank,

You mean you've never bothered to read the other side's evidence, therefore it doesn't exist? I read a fascinating scientific paper just two weeks ago. Problem is, the climate change alarmists have done such a goood job spreading the panic, no one wants to report the evidence from the other side. It's not fashionable to question global warming right now, anyone who dares to question it is labelled as being brainwashed by the Conservatives/Republicans etc. or on the payroll of Big Oil. How is scientific debate and discovery supposed to happen when one side is squashed for questioning the established/preferred view?

Laurie

I think people who call global warming a hoax are funny, thinking they know more than the world's best scientists. What else can you do but laugh at the people who ignore valid science so they won't have to change? It's too ridiculous to even counter!

Laurie

The world’s best scientists stated in the 1970’s that the planet was cooling down and that we needed to do something about it.

I have to ask: Were they wrong then or are they wrong now?

Anyone (who is not visually impaired) can step out into this once beautiful world and see the things effecting its evolution in a negative manner, things that were not here before we were.
So to say we are in a repeating cycle is somewhat irresponsible, for we alter and redirect the future of all we pose and possess. Keep it real!

What's sad is that public opinion is in favor of drastic measures (despite the usual naysayers): but our policy-makers, who are funded by Oil and Industry, are unwilling to bite the hands that feed them.
Maybe we Canadians haven't the cohesiveness required to re-enact a Boston Tea Party scenario, but we sure as heck can vote.
Let's let our government know what we want, when we want it and what we're willing to do to get what we want!

Skeptic

I don't pretend to know the science well enough to comment on the actual science, but every scientist on the planet used to believe that the earth was flat.

It was considered heresy to question that belief for hundreds of years. I'm not worried too much about global warming since I only need the planet for another fifty years or so anyways (unless medical science works wonders in the meantime).

I don't believe that it's the 'common man, being lazy', in this path of global warming. More so do I believe it to be the 'corporate man, being greedy', without care for the future, past their own or their corporation's own, existences.
(I.E. In their collective frame of mind - the world doesn't matter, but their corporation does!)

The sad part about reading these stories and comments is simply this:

We all know pollution is bad....chemicals in the air not good, right?? So then the debate becomes wether the cost of not polluting is worth not doing anything...uhhh duh....its bad....simple...not good....bad....so lets STOP!!! wether the world is ending right now or not....garbage build up can NOT be good....factories and cars pushing chemicals into the air that cause diseases we DIE from is NOT good...killing the animals and nature that have just as much right to this earth as we do is NOT good....just stop...no arguing...

Saw the video...had a good laugh.

More pandering from the catastrophists.

By the way, Laurie, more and more of the 'top scientists' are joining the Deniers, especially as the evidence is revealed. The Greatest Hoax is coming to an end. So sad for all the well-paid scientists.

All these naysayers really need to give their heads a shake.

Personally, being born in the 1950s, living through the various changes to the weather through the years, I can unequivocally say, Global Warming "IS" happening.

I don't recall smog days when I was growing up (except for California having them in the 60's) and I don't recall the vast changes in the weather patterns seen every year. (California was the first to implement the EPA Laws to deal with their smog, due to car exhaust in traffic jambs)

We always had regular seasons and June was always cool and rainy. Now, we have heat waves, smog days where you can't see across your street, increased asthma in children and adults. Storms that were far and between in their intensity are now the norm when they occur.

To you naysayers...you have no idea in how the weather has changed over the years, nor what it's like to breathe fresh air, fresh air that was once abundant without smog days.

To the naysayers I ask; Why do you think there is a big push to get people to stop smoking? Could it possibly be that there is an increase in lung related diseases that are over taxing the Health Care Systems World wide and this is only one thing that they can prevent diseases from, as they can't do anything about lung diseases that are occurring due to the atmosphere, smog, etc..

To the naysayers, look at the skin cancer rates in South America due to the Ozone Layer depletion that occurred and has been directly linked to the Ozone Depletion.

To the naysayers, talk to anyone who has lived for quite a while and ask them what it was like to see clear blue skies (without smog), to breathe clean air, to see pristine lakes, rivers and streams. Ask them what the weather was like back then as opposed to now, you'll quickly realize that, things "HAVE CHANGED" quite drastically in the last 50 years.

To the naysayers I also add; the Governments have passed laws to publish air quality readings throughout the year due to contaminants in the air, passed air emission standards on cars and trucks, closing coal fired electrical generating plants, plus many more things...but you can't see that Global Warming is a real and life threatening reality?

Hard fact for everyone to digest. NOTHING will be done about climate change that will make a big enough difference fast enough. As long as there is oil we will keep digging it up and burning it. Why you ask? Simple, there will always be someone somewhere willing to. Once the developed world migrates (if it does)away from oil, the oil producers will drop the price so under developed countries can afford it. They will then burn it. It's economics 101.

To Skeptic:

There was never a time in history when "all scientists" thought the world was flat, or even when any did. THAT, my friend, was a hoax, just like the historical Scottish tartans.

"All scientists" have historically been persecuted for making observations that go against that which the ignorant power-hungry control-freaks in charge want to control the world, and THAT, my friend, seems to have not changed much.

People… you are still arguing whether we caused global warming or this is just a natural cycle. That point is 'moot' as they said. The question is do we act to reduce emissions or not act, and what we are risking by taking either action. I for one would at least prefer action and a little economic hardship now, rather than gambling it all on the alternative of a world of chaos.

Maybe Global warming is God's Wrath towards all this incessant arguing, hate, killing and wars. Maybe God is looking to see if we can get together on one common subject that has nothing to do with religion.

Well, Den, how much are you willing to do to get what you want? Or, more directly, what are you willing to sacrifice? Wait until "the bill comes due" after the climate change alarmists have had their way, and hindsight will show many who jumped on the save-the-planet bandwagon had been too enthusiastic to embrace the climate-change junk science they haven't yet seen through.

The global cooling story mentioned by a couple of posters above is a myth. Google global cooling myth and you'll find hundreds of stories on it. As stated in most articles, it's not an argument used by knowledgeable skeptics because it crumbles under analysis.

Whether or not you believe that mankind can have an effect on climate change is fine, but as with any subject, a closed mind and an open mouth just makes you look educationally-challenged.

Every wonder why that large island to Canada's north-east is called Greenland? Erik the Red established farms there about 1000 years ago. See http://www.archaeology.org/online/features/greenland/

Since then, the ice has expanded.

So, is it warming or cooling?

Funny thing. In the 70s National Geographic is warning of a RETURNING OF AN ICE AGE....later, my school textbooks are warning of imminent doom due to OVERPOPULATION....then we were to be burned up from decimation of THE OZONE. Hmmm...we don't here much about those any more do we? Environmental responsibility is a must, but taking stupid pills that make us forget the last 30 years of failed environmental woes is just dishonest.

While I haven't watched the video, I have seen some pretty nasty stuff the world is going through. I have seen the lake I live on go from freezing over in the shallow areas to not freezing at all. I have seen Tokyo, Vancouver, Toronto, and Los Angeles. The view is scarred by smog and pollution. For a person to say that we as a people are not contributors or that as Canadians we have a small part of the CO2 emission pie and we therefore have no reason to reduce our piece of it then you've got to be the owner of a CO2 emitting plant or 5 gas guzzling vehicles.
Global warming may be true or false I'm not sure. I don't argue for or against it. But I do know the world is changing. Canada experiencing its first F-5 tornado this year is an indicator of this change.
Should the government be responsible for our lives? Are they our parents that have to say, "No Johnny put your CO2 emitting high octane vehicle away and play with this electric one." It is rather unfortunate that in our world there are those that would rather pollute the world with toxic and greenhouse chemicals than go and sacrifice some of their profits to help keep the world clean and maybe cleaner. If you think about it the homeless and the hitchhikers and all of those people who are too poor to own a vehicle are the best role models we've got right now at keeping greenhouse emissions down. I believe what I see now and what will come. If you cannot believe what you see is at least a part of our doing then do the world a favour and pack your bags and live on the moon. The world will be much better without you.

If you take the IPCCs own numbers for the "average" global temperature in the years 1998-2007, there has been no significant warming since 1998, and there has been a significant COOLING since 1992.

This, in spite of a increase in CO2 over the same period.

The real issue is not global warming, but pollution. The following four facts are undeniable, even by global warming skeptics.

1. Humans Pollute
2. We produce toxic gases that were never designed to be part of the earth's atmosphere
3. As gases become trapped in the atmosphere sunlight becomes trapped by the earth's atmosphere
4. Trapped sunlight (energy) can only serve to warm the earth, NOT cool it

That's all you really need to know to understand this problem. It doesn't take a genius to make the next logical inference that if we continue to pollute, that cycle will continue.

So the simple solution is to stop polluting!!!
