Canadian forces were involved in a major offensive Sunday that cleared Taliban insurgents and a weapons cache out of an area 40 kilometres west of Kandahar City.
No Canadian or coalition troops were injured during the one-day mission, called Operation Sharp Sword.
Officials confirmed that 41 Taliban insurgents were killed during the mission.
Members of Quebec's Van Doos regiment, along with Nepalese soldiers and Afghan national army troops cleared an area of Fiah Choi in the Panjwaii-Zhari districts where a number of Taliban strongholds were suspected.
Officials said they uncovered a large weapons cache during the sweep.
CTV's Murray Oliver said that Canadian troops are commonly being paired with Afghan troops during one-day missions to help Afghan troops become more independent.
"The idea is really to help the Afghan national army become a more effective fighting force," he told CTV Newsnet on Sunday.
The fact that there were no coalition casualties will bring relief to Canadian troops, he said.
"The Canadian operation here in southern Afghanistan is politically sensitive," he said. "Everybody is really relieved that this operation, this small operation, went as well as it did."

I applaud the budget, even though Health Care and education may stay unscathed. Sadly this cannot last and I worry to later this year where cuts will become enviable. If anything, this provides the Wildrose Alliance plenty of ammo when an election is called.
