LONDON — Climate change experts will stage a series of talks on the website Second Life to coincide with the UN conference on the subject underway in Bali.

Second Nature, Nature Publishing Group's archipelago in Second Life, will host the talks, the group said Tuesday.

Speakers include Simon Buckle, director of climate change policy at the Grantham Institute for Climate Change, on Dec. 11 and George Monbiot, author of "Heat: How to Stop the Planet From Burning,'' on Dec. 13.

The talks are free and open to all. Second Life avatars can teleport to Second Nature via this website, according to a news release.

"A debate has been raging about the carbon footprint of avatars in Second Life,'' said Nature Publishing Group, a division of Macmillan Publishers Ltd., referring to the personas that users adopt on the website.

That footprint has been calculated at about 75 kilowatt-hours per avatar per year -- producing over 39 kilograms of carbon dioxide -- which is less than the average American household would use in three days, said the release.

"Joining the debate on Second Nature is certainly more environmentally sound than jumping on a plane to the Indonesian island where the official conference is taking place,'' Nature Publishing Group said.
