The weather phenomenon La Nina will bring Canada the coldest winter in nearly 15 years, Environment Canada warned Friday.
Environment Canada's temperature forecast shows the majority of the country will experience a "temperature anomaly" of below-normal temperatures through the months of December, January and February.
Much of Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan, Alberta and parts of British Columbia and southern Ontario will also see above-normal precipitation.
David Phillips, senior climatologist with Environment Canada, told The Canadian Press that the temperature and precipitation abnormalities are likely the result of the weather phenomenon La Nina.
La Nina, meaning the little girl, is the appearance of cooler-than-normal waters in the eastern and central Pacific Ocean.
"La Nina is thought to occur due to increases in the strength of the normal patterns of trade wind circulation," Environment Canada's website says.
"For reasons not yet fully understood, periodically these trade winds are strengthened, increasing the amount of cooler water."
These cooler waters result in wetter-than-normal conditions in the northern hemisphere and changes to the jet stream over North America.
"The shifted jet stream contributes to large departures from the normal location and strength of storm paths. The overall changes in the atmosphere result in temperature and precipitation anomalies over North America which can persist for several months," Environment Canada says.
In the past, La Nina caused drought and floods around the world. It also whips up more hurricanes in the Atlantic.
The effects of the weather phenomenon have already been felt in parts of Western Canada. Earlier this month, a fierce storm dumped nearly 80 centimetres of snow on Whistler, B.C. over 48 hours. The massive snowfall prompted management at the famous Whistler Blackcomb ski hill to open one week ahead of schedule.

Two questions:
1) What does Mr Colvin personally have to gain by what he is exposing ?
2) What has the Goverment gain or protect by discrediting Mr Colvin?

Now, whether it is human or naturally caused, that is a whole other question that isn't really related to this story.

Instead of spending billions trying to prevent a natural cycle, why don't we spend billions in not only identifying if this issue is part of the cycle, but protecting ourselves against the changes that will be brought by the shifts?
Wouldn't we be better off making our society, shelter and technology hold against a shift to a new ice age, rather than trying to prevent it?
Why are we spending billions arguing about reducing emissions for the benefit of the planet, but not for the benefit of our health? The "fate of the planet" is irrelevant if we all have terminal illnesses.

Didn't they say the same thing last year? And when did we get our first winter storm (with our first serious snow fall) of the season? It was on Valentine's Day.
Like Joe said, I won't panic until I actually see.
Seriously, global warming should be cancelled in Canada...

Please, forget about the 300% increase in CO2 due to industrialism, the fact that CO2 has a high interaction cross-section with infra-red light, the fact that the overall global average temperature has increased faster than it ever has in history before. Let's all pretend we're scientists with years of university education! YAY!

Of late, it is more correctly being referred to as 'climate change'. As others have pointed out, some areas are getting warmer; some are getting wetter.
In general, we can expect the extremes to be greater... case in point, an Oxfam report states that the number of weather relate disasters has quadrupled in the past 20 years (see http://www.oxfam.org/en/news/2007/pr071125_climate_change_hits_poor_hardest)
Yes, there are weather cycles; but at some point (hopefully before it is too late) the 'nay-sayers' out there that there is a dangerous trend and we'll all make suitable changes to our lifestyles!

That and I make sure my oil tank doesn't go below 1/2 in the winter and I've lots of kerosene on hand if the power goes out.
If I need these things then great I've got them if not then that's fine too.

I'm told that a couple of weeks of brutally cold weather would do wonders for the Mountain Pine Beetle situation in Western Canada. Let's hope its a long, hard cold winter. A couple of two week stretches of -40 weather won't kill us but it sure will help keep a lot of hardworking Canadians employed.

You people who think this is great are totally NUTS! How nice is this going to be for friends and family travelling on icy roads. I'm sure the homeless will love it also. Humbug!

However, given the taxes and price increases on the energy we need to get warm,I wonder how some will cope.
Most obvious are poor people who will have to decide whether to eat properly,or stay warm. And of course, the costs of heating hospitals, schools, and everything else will be borne by taxpayers.
If it comes about, there will be costs. And most of the suffering will be done by the poor.

I hope Environment Canada is wrong on their prediction though. I remember 3 years ago they were saying the summer would be above normal and it turned out to be the very cool and cloudy.

It saddens me that fellow Canadians can be so ill-informed about what Global warming actually is... So much for being a smart country.

Since the system is way more complex than a simple playground toy, it is really difficult to predict all the effects of adding energy into the system.

I really don't know what to say about global warming. It could be bogus pipe-dreaming, but I remember playing hockey on Okanagan lake in the eighties. People driving their trucks out on the ice. That just hasn't happened in many years now.
Bring on the snow and cold!

As for the global-warming argument, just talk to an Aussie, they'll tell you that global warming is in fact real - the worst drought in the country's history. Imagine having to collect rainwater just to take a shower? And reuse the dirty water to water your plants and lawn? Yes there are climate cycles, but the long-term graphs say there is an increase in temperatures and the polar ice caps are melting.

-less energy used to heat homes
- fewer sweaters and coats need to be manufactured
- longer growing season, more food to export
- reduced transportation costs with the ability to grow fruit and vegitables rear round
- fewer homeless people having to freeze on the street
-etc,etc.
It's a win/win!

Second, whether or not "climate change" is a man-made situation or a normal long term climate pattern, drastically increasing levels of CO2 in the air we breathe can't be good for any of us.

So, I'll go with climate change as the topic too. Everyone talks about business and consumerism being the causes and the evildoers behind the change.
But, maybe I'm being too simplistic. Someone mentioned changes in the last million years or so. Isn't one of the changes, the population of humans? hasn't thqat grown over the past million years? And, since people have a body temperature of about 98 degrees, some of this must surely radiate out. Doesn't this mean that it has to be warmer just as a matter of physics? Maybe the first step is to lower the birth rate? Birthing Licenses anyone?

2. In the 1600’s, there was a “mini-Ice Age”. The Vikings had long since abandoned Greenland. The Thames River would routinely freeze solid during the winter. Europe had problems with the shortened growing season. What caused the previous warm period to change to very cold period, and was this good or bad?
3. The mini-Ice age ended and we had a warming. By the 20th century, we had warmed up significantly, but not quite as warm as at was in the 900’s - 1100’s. The majority of the warming in the 20th century happened before 1940’s. What caused this warming, and was it good or bad? Should we hope that the climate warms further, to what it was in the 900’s - 1100’s?

"For over five billion years the planet has warmed up and cooled down all on its own. Ten thousand years ago Ontario was under a sheet of ice. A million years ago there was no ice in the Arctic. For the next five billion years the planet will continue to warm up and cool down on its own."

Two goups of people, those that get it and those that don't. No matter how much evidence presented to those that don't they will not accept anything that challenges their beliefs and will accept a prediction of a cold winter as proof that it doesn't exist. As a physician I get to see, on a daily basis, how we can discount all the evidence just to preserve our perception of ourself, to keep from facing our fears or to defend our harmful lifestyles (ie smoking can't be bad for you cause uncle Louie lived to 90 and smoked every day or there is no global warming cos its cold today). Oh well, we won't suffer personally.

Now, for those who think warm winters interspersed with cold is not normal, get a grip. The climate has always changed, will always change. There is no such thing as normal when it comes to climate. It has always changed. If every january 17th it was always -14 in Saskatoon, fine we could say we have a grasp of climate. Unfortunately for the Gore types, this has never been the case. Warm, cold , warm, cold. Dry, wet, etc.. Carry on. For thse who say a cold winter proves global warming, in some kind of twisted way, you should all work to withdraw all the news reports on how the tsunami was caused by global warming. First study what a tsunami is, and then conclude whether this global warming farce is worth worshipping.
