The weather phenomenon La Nina will bring Canada the coldest winter in nearly 15 years, Environment Canada warned Friday.

Environment Canada's temperature forecast shows the majority of the country will experience a "temperature anomaly" of below-normal temperatures through the months of December, January and February.

Much of Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan, Alberta and parts of British Columbia and southern Ontario will also see above-normal precipitation.

David Phillips, senior climatologist with Environment Canada, told The Canadian Press that the temperature and precipitation abnormalities are likely the result of the weather phenomenon La Nina.

La Nina, meaning the little girl, is the appearance of cooler-than-normal waters in the eastern and central Pacific Ocean.

"La Nina is thought to occur due to increases in the strength of the normal patterns of trade wind circulation," Environment Canada's website says.

"For reasons not yet fully understood, periodically these trade winds are strengthened, increasing the amount of cooler water."

These cooler waters result in wetter-than-normal conditions in the northern hemisphere and changes to the jet stream over North America.

"The shifted jet stream contributes to large departures from the normal location and strength of storm paths. The overall changes in the atmosphere result in temperature and precipitation anomalies over North America which can persist for several months," Environment Canada says.

In the past, La Nina caused drought and floods around the world. It also whips up more hurricanes in the Atlantic.

The effects of the weather phenomenon have already been felt in parts of Western Canada. Earlier this month, a fierce storm dumped nearly 80 centimetres of snow on Whistler, B.C. over 48 hours. The massive snowfall prompted management at the famous Whistler Blackcomb ski hill to open one week ahead of schedule.

It's about time! Hopefully though this "forecast" will hold true. I'm so sick of people whining about how they wish winter would just go away. It kills me to think that they've probably been living in this country for who knows how long and and all they do is cry when it gets cold. Go south to those who can't handle it! I'm up for a couple of good ol' snowball fights this year!

Yeah let's not hear any more crap about how Canadian winters are permanently warmer because of global warming and climate change. Some winters are warmer, and some are cold and crappy. Let's not use any more of Canadians' tax dollars trying to attack a problem that doesn't exist in Canada.

To all those who say this is proof that global warming does not exist; it is a trend. One or two years does not break the trend, it is merely a blip. The statistical trend is without question warmer overall.

Now, whether it is human or naturally caused, that is a whole other question that isn't really related to this story.

Global warming does not in the literal sense, refer to a planet-wide warming on all levels. In natural history, global warming trends may have been seen prior to ice ages, but I do not have the vast data true scientists do. However, there have been natural events in Earth's history that precede climatic changes, such as ice ages, global climate shifts, etc. Assuming this is happening now, then even if we're part of it, we're only a small part in a natural cycle we have no control over.

Instead of spending billions trying to prevent a natural cycle, why don't we spend billions in not only identifying if this issue is part of the cycle, but protecting ourselves against the changes that will be brought by the shifts?

Wouldn't we be better off making our society, shelter and technology hold against a shift to a new ice age, rather than trying to prevent it?

Why are we spending billions arguing about reducing emissions for the benefit of the planet, but not for the benefit of our health? The "fate of the planet" is irrelevant if we all have terminal illnesses.

So you figure that since we MIGHT finally get a normal winter that all of the scientific research and proof as written by thousands of the world's top scientists doesn't mean a thing? I certainly hope you're right, but I won't take any chances. Have you ever seen the satelite photos of the arctic circle today as compared to five years ago? Check it out and re-comment. It is scary. What about all of the melting glaciers and drastic weather systems occuring on a monthly basis all over the world? It makes perfect sense to me that if you make a total mess of your home, destroying and sullying everything that makes it liveable, you will eventually need to clean it up before it kills you. We need to clean up NOW and stop gambling with our collective future. Maybe it's true that global warming has nothing to do with us, but are you willing to take that chance? It's time to act responibly - and we're all responsible for the mess we've created - and start to clean up our planet just as we would want to live in a clean house. Anything else is an irresponsible gamble and is just plain lazy.

Several years ago, in a moment of tremendous oversight, the phenomenon was named 'global warming'.

Of late, it is more correctly being referred to as 'climate change'. As others have pointed out, some areas are getting warmer; some are getting wetter.

In general, we can expect the extremes to be greater... case in point, an Oxfam report states that the number of weather relate disasters has quadrupled in the past 20 years (see http://www.oxfam.org/en/news/2007/pr071125_climate_change_hits_poor_hardest)

Yes, there are weather cycles; but at some point (hopefully before it is too late) the 'nay-sayers' out there that there is a dangerous trend and we'll all make suitable changes to our lifestyles!

Shan

A cold winter good for the economy? Not likely! The originator of that statement is a climatologist, not an economist. A cold winter will significantly increase the cost of heating (and increase our carbon emissions in the process), and Canadians booking holidays out of the country is a drag on our economy, not a boost. Furthermore, our winter tourism revenue from visitors coming here will also fall. Ever seen a ski hill when it is -35c? It is barely operating as nobody wants to go outside when it is that cold. Make no mistake - a cold winter will be bad for our economy.

That and I make sure my oil tank doesn't go below 1/2 in the winter and I've lots of kerosene on hand if the power goes out.

Apart from my kids getting a taste of what I'm always telling them about how brutal winters were when I was young, there is an upside to this.

I'm told that a couple of weeks of brutally cold weather would do wonders for the Mountain Pine Beetle situation in Western Canada. Let's hope its a long, hard cold winter. A couple of two week stretches of -40 weather won't kill us but it sure will help keep a lot of hardworking Canadians employed.

If climatoligists can't even get a weekly forcast right - how are to believe them when they make predictions about a scenario that reaches weeks and months into the future? There should be some accountability for the clowns who are wrong about issues like this. Stock markets listen and the wrong "opinion" could cause an unecessary price increase in energy costs. Then again, maybe some of these "experts" are on the back alley payroll of energy providers....

Doug
said

I'm OK with cold winters. And I'm not about to suggest it says anything about global warming.I am sure it does not.
However, given the taxes and price increases on the energy we need to get warm,I wonder how some will cope.
Most obvious are poor people who will have to decide whether to eat properly,or stay warm. And of course, the costs of heating hospitals, schools, and everything else will be borne by taxpayers.
If it comes about, there will be costs. And most of the suffering will be done by the poor.

Glenn
said

Global warming is an overall trend, and a decision on whether it is real shouldn't be based just on one year of data, whether it be abnormally cold or warm. As might happen, Canada might be extremely cold but Europe might be extremely warm so it probably balances out. I think a couple of winters ago when we had an extremely mild January the polar vortex was shifted and Europe was experiencing extreme cold while we were mild.

I hope Environment Canada is wrong on their prediction though. I remember 3 years ago they were saying the summer would be above normal and it turned out to be the very cool and cloudy.

Lart from Above
said

Thing about "global warming" is that it's global. Some parts of the world aren't in Canada. Ask the Inuit what's happening to ice on our northern shores. The jet stream moving south will make Canada colder and America warmer and drier; nobody is better off from that.

Anyway, looks like Toronto will mostly escape the unseasonal cold.

It's pretty shocking that a week of cold weather and a forecast for more brings out a sad chorus of global warming cynicists. One day, the white christmas will be a thing of the past, and maybe then, you naysayers will also be gone.

Global warming doesn't necessarily mean drastic heating. It implies climate changes which could mean cooling in some parts as well. Although La Nina is a known cycle unrelated to GW.

It saddens me that fellow Canadians can be so ill-informed about what Global warming actually is... So much for being a smart country.

Jake
said

Here is simple analogy for those having trouble making the connection between global warming and abnormally cold weather: Imagine the earth's weather system as a big swing (pendulum). Global warming is putting more energy into the system - like giving the swing a push. This results in increases at BOTH extremes. In the 'forward swing' you experience hotter hot periods, but on the 'reverse swing', colder cold periods.

Since the system is way more complex than a simple playground toy, it is really difficult to predict all the effects of adding energy into the system.

For those that have regularly looked at EC's seasonal outlooks, there is also a chart indiciated the accuracy of these outlooks, and for the most part there is a >30% accuracy - most are less than 10%. EC will also admit that their 5-day outlooks are only right a 1/3 of the time, so I won't believe it until I see it.
As for the global-warming argument, just talk to an Aussie, they'll tell you that global warming is in fact real - the worst drought in the country's history. Imagine having to collect rainwater just to take a shower? And reuse the dirty water to water your plants and lawn? Yes there are climate cycles, but the long-term graphs say there is an increase in temperatures and the polar ice caps are melting.

For over five billion years the planet has warmed up and cooled down all on its own. Ten thousand years ago Ontario was under a sheet of ice. A million years ago there was no ice in the Arctic. For the next five billion years the planet will continue to warm up and cool down on its own.

Predictably, those ignorant about global warming are out in full force touting this as proof they made the right decision buying an Escalade. Is the weather cyclical, yes, does this mean global warming is a myth, no. Global warming also doesn't mean every part of the globe will warm, it means unpredictable climate change brought on by global climate events like La Nina, which become stronger and more pronounced.

We talk about Canada at risk of losing its culture about as much as we do global warming- A cold winter addresses both of these- A COLD winter preceded by a warm winter is EXACTLY WHAT global warming is. inpredictable weather patterns. extreme weather. A really cold winter will be great for western Canada and the Mountain Pine Beetle. However, there is one problem. Even if the weather drops below -30°C to -40°C for several days, all it takes is one beetle, or is it two, in a location where it doesn’t drop below -30°C to -40°C to start the process all over again. The beetle has crossed the Rocky Mountains, God bless our pine tree forests.

I say let's embrace Global Warming. Canada for one will greatly benefit from it.

-less energy used to heat homes
- fewer sweaters and coats need to be manufactured
- longer growing season, more food to export
- reduced transportation costs with the ability to grow fruit and vegitables rear round
- fewer homeless people having to freeze on the street
-etc,etc.

It's a win/win!

First, the term "global warming" is outdated and has been changed to the term "climate change". Just because Canada could have a cold winter doesn't mean the climate isn't changing.

Second, whether or not "climate change" is a man-made situation or a normal long term climate pattern, drastically increasing levels of CO2 in the air we breathe can't be good for any of us.

Global Warming is the label used for describing the overall shift and dramatic change in the weather patterns due to the environmental damage we are incurring on our beloved planet. When things get extra hot, they also get extra cold.... so please don't deny the fact that these abnormal swings in weather patterns does indeed show us that we are headed in the wrong direction!

eric

I started reading the comments thinking I would be reading about cold winters. Instead it became a discussion about climate change.

So, I'll go with climate change as the topic too. Everyone talks about business and consumerism being the causes and the evildoers behind the change.

But, maybe I'm being too simplistic. Someone mentioned changes in the last million years or so. Isn't one of the changes, the population of humans? hasn't thqat grown over the past million years? And, since people have a body temperature of about 98 degrees, some of this must surely radiate out. Doesn't this mean that it has to be warmer just as a matter of physics? Maybe the first step is to lower the birth rate? Birthing Licenses anyone?

RAV

Many of these comments are amusing. Pick you cycle and determine the rate of climate change if any. Personally I like "Unstoppable global warming: every 1500 years," by S. FRED SINGER AND DENNIS T. AVERY (ROWMAN AND LITTLEFIELD) which [points out it used to be warm in England and Greenland where they grew such crops as grapes. Maybe the environmentalists will let the world continue to warm such that we can get new English wine.

It's little wonder why people have such a wide range of opinions on global warming. The glaciers have been melting for 10,000 years I believe...and now people say they are melting faster than ever. It is hard to say either way. But I do agree we need to cut down on emmissions just for the sake of our air quality. There are days where Toronto and other major cities look gross because of all the smog. That can't be good for our health.

1. In the 900’s to 1100’s - it was much warmer than it is now. Greenland was a settled by the Vikings and they had an agricultural community there. England was warm enough to support the cultivation of plants that are not presently grown there. How could this be, and was this a good thing or a bad thing?

2. In the 1600’s, there was a “mini-Ice Age”. The Vikings had long since abandoned Greenland. The Thames River would routinely freeze solid during the winter. Europe had problems with the shortened growing season. What caused the previous warm period to change to very cold period, and was this good or bad?

3. The mini-Ice age ended and we had a warming. By the 20th century, we had warmed up significantly, but not quite as warm as at was in the 900’s - 1100’s. The majority of the warming in the 20th century happened before 1940’s. What caused this warming, and was it good or bad? Should we hope that the climate warms further, to what it was in the 900’s - 1100’s?

Wow this has really turned into a full debate in climate change. Obviously, the debate over this is NOT finished counter to what other people might say. Humans contribute a very small percentage to the overall CO2 in the atmosphere. This will not warm the planet all by itself but MAY cause a chain reaction with the ocean. This chain reaction would drastically raise the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere thus warming the climate. All I am saying is we can NOT say there is facts proving or disproving the theory of climate change. Some scientists are still not convinced of this theory because of the many unknown questions. So who are we to say someone on this comment page is wrong? Let the debate continue. For now you (the individual) should decide how "green" you will want to be.

The Earth's axial tilt varies between 22.1° and 24.5°.Because of the periodic variations of this angle the severity of the Earth's seasons changes. With less axial tilt the Sun's solar radiation is more evenly distributed between winter and summer. However, less tilt also increases the difference in radiation receipts between the equatorial and polar regions.hope this helps!

We live in a close bio-sphere. What is done in any part of the globe impacts the quality of life such as air, land, water and seasonality. The outcry over global warming is not to be dismissed due to a break in the weather pattern established over the past decade. However perhaps the pollution index on a global scale should be looked at. What they do there, will eventually make it's way here to our part of the globe, called human activity in the environment. My mind is more concerned about the pollution that impacts the environment with industrialized society. As for the snow, deep cold is required to control the insect population and is a requirement for certain plants to germinate. Deep cold doesn't mean snow however, I hope that this year we can have the ice rink and snowball fights and perhaps real answers to global warming... particles in the atmosphere block incoming shortwave solar radiation, so does cloud cover, dust molecules and so on. It is not dooms day, tis the reality of todays society. LET IT SNOW!

This is another strong indication of global warming. Remember that what we can expect are extremes of weather. Droughts, Hurricanes, Typhoons, and extreme variances in weather are all indications. What to look for are reports like this where records are broken with greater frequency... most snowfall, extremely harsh winter. The warming aspect is an overall number like a fever... a couple degrees higher body temperature causes chaos in your body, like the average temperature raising on the earth.

Re: global warming
Two goups of people, those that get it and those that don't. No matter how much evidence presented to those that don't they will not accept anything that challenges their beliefs and will accept a prediction of a cold winter as proof that it doesn't exist. As a physician I get to see, on a daily basis, how we can discount all the evidence just to preserve our perception of ourself, to keep from facing our fears or to defend our harmful lifestyles (ie smoking can't be bad for you cause uncle Louie lived to 90 and smoked every day or there is no global warming cos its cold today). Oh well, we won't suffer personally.

Cities stink

UHHHH, Ducimus, squirrels do not hibernate, dude. Typical urban ignorance.
Now, for those who think warm winters interspersed with cold is not normal, get a grip. The climate has always changed, will always change. There is no such thing as normal when it comes to climate. It has always changed. If every january 17th it was always -14 in Saskatoon, fine we could say we have a grasp of climate. Unfortunately for the Gore types, this has never been the case. Warm, cold , warm, cold. Dry, wet, etc.. Carry on. For thse who say a cold winter proves global warming, in some kind of twisted way, you should all work to withdraw all the news reports on how the tsunami was caused by global warming. First study what a tsunami is, and then conclude whether this global warming farce is worth worshipping.

For those of you who think that a single season refutes global warming / greenhouse effect theory:

Learn the difference between temperature and climate. You are not climatologists (or even meteorologists).
