Eye on Idol
The Brian Melo freight train continues to roar on, and its next stop is this week's release of the heartfelt rocker's debut album. Hitting stores shelves and online vendors on Tuesday, Nov. 27, the 12-song "Livin' It" has been billed as a catchy rock CD partially penned by Melo himself.
"I just had to make sure that I put out a great, great album that I'm happy with and that's it," Melo told The Canadian Press during a stop on the cross-Canada concert tour he is currently in the middle of. "Now it's just the next step to put it out there and see what happens."
The future looks good for Melo, with a career that's still sizzling from its kickstart in September. He went from his Canadian Idol win right into songwriting camp and recording the album, all the while rehearsing for his current tour, which began Nov. 18 in Charlottetown and wraps Dec. 14 in Red Deer, Alta.
The tour also features Canadian Idol's Top 2 and 3 finishers, Jaydee Bixby and Carly Rae Jepsen, and has seen city-specific cameos from finalists Dwight d'Eon and Tara Oram.
The Newfoundland-bred Oram's stint on the tour didn't exactly represent a reunion at long last for Melo, though - she is credited with singing back-up on his record and has been sighted on Melo's arm more than once since the show finale. Not one to kiss and tell, Melo is keeping quiet on his personal life.
All this adds up to a hectic year for the soulful singer, but he says he has enough motivation to last a lifetime and the confidence in his record (produced by Jeff Dalziel, who has also worked with Edwin and Chantal Kreviazuk) to promote it with his whole heart.
"I have high expectations for myself," he said recently. "You have to have the right songs to make the right album and for the first shot, I felt I got it right."
