Progressive Conservative Leader Danny Williams trounced his rivals in the Newfoundland and Labrador election Tuesday, easily winning his second straight majority government.

"Tonight's victory isn't a victory for Progressive Conservatives, it's a victory for Newfoundland and Labrador," he told cheering supporters.

"We're on the cusp of greatness here," he added. "Finally, we're going to get what we deserve. We're going to be masters of our destiny, we're going to be self-reliant, and in the next two years we're going to be a 'have' province in this Confederation."

The Progressive Conservatives won in 43 ridings, while the Liberals secured three and NDP Leader Lorraine Michael won the only seat for her party.

Liberal Leader Gerry Reid lost his own seat -- by a margin of just seven votes. He had represented the northern district of The Isles of Notre Dame since 1996.

In a speech to supporters,  Reid said the Liberals would continue to press on, and that some of the quality candidates would return in the future.

Headed into the election, the Tories had 34 seats, the Liberals had 11, the NDP one and there were two vacancies.

Williams had earlier said that anything less than a majority government would have been seen as a loss.

He has gained national media attention for his feuds with Prime Minister Stephen Harper, and Tuesday's resounding victory will likely mean more clashes with the federal government.

The premier has said Harper's altered equalization formula cuts back revenues from N.L. -- a claim the prime minister has denied.

Williams, a Rhodes scholar and successful businessman, had been widely expected to win the election.

Just before the 22-day campaign began, he had forged a deal with various energy companies to develop the $5-billion Hebron offshore oil project.

Williams drafted a "Memorandum of Understanding" that included a $110 million investment by the province in return for a 4.9 per cent equity stake in the project.

The province also negotiated an improved royalty regime that will see projected revenues for the province of $16 billion over the 25-year life of the project -- assuming oil is in the $70-per-barrel range.

His closest competition in the election was Reid, although for the first time in 35 years, the Liberals were unable to run a candidate in every riding.

One Liberal hopeful died of a heart-attack, while two others became ill.

"That was the hardest part of our campaign," Reid told The Canadian Press. "We ran the best campaign we could with what we had."

Reid focused on the fisheries and other rural issues, and said Williams had done little to stem the flow of people leaving the province -- at least 7,000 N.L. residents have left since 2001, while the population is 505,000.

NDP Leader Lorraine Michael had hoped her party would win at least one more seat, but told campaign workers they should be proud.

"I don't care what the numbers show, I know how hard all of our volunteers worked and I know how hard our candidates worked," she told supporters in the St. John's-area district of Signal Hill-Quidi Vidi.

Not much of a race out there, how on earth does he manage to get elected so easily. Any politician dreams of that kind of popularity and electability. It's not something which happens that easily in the rest of Canada.

Someone should let other Premiers in on his secret of Fed bashing, when there is nothing at home to cheer about.

Other politicians across the country could learn some things from Danny Williams. Most importantly, if you make promises keep them, and kick out the hogs at the trough. Congratulations to Danny Boy.

The high level of support was there long before the fed bashing, so using that as excuse is pretty lame.

I'm glad to see Danny win again...he has done wonderful things for Newfoundland...he has done more than any other premier. Newfoundland is on it's way to becoming a "have" province as opposed to a "have not". Way to go Danny...keep up the good work!

His success was partially due to fed bashing, but also due to the fact the economy has been doing reasonably well in Newfoundland & Labrador and the province is finally approaching have status. If I lived there I would certainly vote for him.

His secret, well he's successful at everything he does. He made millions with Cable TV, ran a big law practice, and is a Rhodes scholar. He is not like most politicians. He has nothing to prove. That's why he is so popular. And he is not afraid to stand up to anyone.

Let's be honest -- this guy's got charisma, stands up for what he believes in, and fights for his people as a whole. There's the ever-elusive secret to political success.

Most of the political breed these days are handpicked lawyers, riding their name and only ever look to oil the squeaky wheel.

Congrats to somebody who cares about public service and doesn't just give lip service.

Danny Williams is the best thing to happend to our province. In his 4 years of Governmnet, he's done more for the province than any other Liberal Premier has done. Mr. Williams cares about Newfoundland and is making sure that Newfoundland gets what it deserves. I totally support Danny Williams in his ferderal bashing of Ottawa, after all, Newfoundland became worse since it joined Canada, and Danny is just trying to bring it back! Keep up the good work!

Way to go to the Williams Party!.. Danny has done nothing but great things for the province since coming into power 4 years ago.. I'm sure the next 4 years will be just as great. It's wonderful to finally have a leader in power who will fight for the rights of Newfoundland & Labrador!

As an outsider looking into the NFLD/LAB election, Danny Williams did very well. He should consider running for PM of Canada. We need someone like Danny running this country, someone not afraid to say what he's thinking or feeling. Someone who respects people for who they are. Keep up the good work Mr. Williams and best of luck in the next 4 years.

Congrats Danny and team.....Look forward to watching you continue to put Newfoundland on the map !!

Danny Williams won not because of Fed Bashing, but because he's an effective and competent leader, Miles and Charlie. He was given another mandate because he actively defends the interests of his people, and that is the job of a politician who is worth his salt.

Here's another tidbit; his salary goes to charity. What other Canadian politician past or present can say they've done that. I know of none He comes across as giving a damn about his province. Many others say they do, but there are always other motives.

Danny Williams doesnt even get a salary for being a premier (or if he does he donates it to charity, I cant recall now). That shows his whole intentions of doing this for the good of Newfoundland, and not for his own personal agenda.
