Transport Canada has recalled three brands of car seats.

The government agency has deemed certain car seats put out by Cosco, Eddie Bauer and Safety 1st unsafe as they each have a strap that can become loose during an accident.

"When in forward-facing mode, the harness system that holds the child into the seat can loosen," says a news release issued by Transport Canada on Sunday. "This creates slack in the harness system, which reduces the effectiveness of the child seat in the event of a vehicle collision and could create excessive movement of the child's body and head, which could lead to serious injury."

Dorel Juvenile Group, the company that makes the seats, will replace the woven strap with a knit adjuster strap. This should eliminate any slippage, Transport Canada said.

More than 314,000 car seats were sold in Canada between November 2003 to December 2005.

Consumers should continue to use the car seat until the adjustment strap is replaced, Dorel recommended. They should not be returning the product to retailers.

Consumers who completed and returned their registration card will receive notice by mail, Transport Canada said.

Those who have not sent in the registration card should contact Dorel Distribution Canada at their toll free number.

The following car seat models will be affected:

  • Cosco Alpha Omega: 22C15BNP, 22C15CRK, 22C15ROR, 22C15TUX, 22C26BNG, 22C26GRH
