Eye on Idol

After Tuesday night's results episode, Nova Scotian lobster fisherman Dwight d'Eon is hoping his performances on Canadian Idol will take after the last song he sang on the show -- "Unforgettable."

The 28-year-old rocker's elimination during "salute to the standards" week went hand-in-hand with a theme he was less than comfortable with. The episode was the most-watched of the season, with 1.9 million total viewers, the West Pubnico resident garnering the least amount of votes from more than 3.7 million cast.

"I've made it way further than I had ever hoped for," said d'Eon, who'd faced regular reprisals from  less-than-thrilled judges in recent weeks. "I've learned so much... It definitely changed me as a person and it definitely changed me as an artist, as a singer and as a performer."

The show ended with d'Eon singing his second song from the previous night, Frank Sinatra's "I Get a Kick Out of You." It began with a performance of Paul Anka classics by the Top 4, who were later joined by the original Canadian idol himself.

Singing "Put Your Head on My Shoulder" with the competitors, Anka continued wooing the crowd with his signature song, "My Way."

Host Ben Mulroney also offered the floor to the judges early in show, who each offered a comment on one of the competitors' performances so far in the competition. It was judge Farley Flex who was asked to speak to d'Eon.

"What I would suggest is you squeeze every single ounce of this opportunity," said Flex. "Bottle it and take it on your journey as a musician. We loved you because you were a musician and an artist when you got here you're still one. Whatever happens tonight, you take that and go forth and multiply."

After announcing the elimination, Mulroney reminded d'Eon how far he had come since his audition in the spring.

"At the beginning of this thing you said that your guitar was like a crutch," Mulroney said. "I think the judges said if you were a real performer you'd get over that. Here you are, Top 4, a real well-rounded performer. You're going to go home to a hero's welcome.

"A great solace that a lot of your fans, including me, are going to take is that we'll see you back on stage in two weeks at the finale, hopefully playing your guitar."

It was a suggestion that seemed to perk up the eliminated competitor, who'd shown particular skill playing the guitar solo from the Carlos Santana hit "Smooth" during pop/rock week.

"I love you guys so very, very much," he said to his fans. "This has been the greatest summer of my life."

Watch the Idols perform one of your choices and one chosen by the judges during fan choice/people's choice week after being mentored by judge Sass Jordan -- Monday, Sept. 3 at 9 p.m. ET.
