MONTREAL The union representing maintenance workers at a one of Canada's oldest and largest cemeteries decided Saturday not to vote on a contract offer.
Management at Montreal's Notre-Dame-des-Neiges cemetery presented an offer in hopes of ending a three-month labour dispute. Instead, 84 of the 130 workers voted unanimously to present a counter-offer on Monday.
Union president Daniel Maillet says workers decided not to vote on the offer because it remains far from their demands.
Meanwhile, the cemetery's chief negotiator, Guy Dufort, says the latest offer from management was "very generous.''
Cremations and burials have been stopped at the cemetery since workers were locked out in May. The workers went on strike immediately after the lockout.
The union wants better conditions, including increased pay and pension benefits but management has said it can't afford the demands.

I applaud the budget, even though Health Care and education may stay unscathed. Sadly this cannot last and I worry to later this year where cuts will become enviable. If anything, this provides the Wildrose Alliance plenty of ammo when an election is called.
