Imagine Celine Dion -- the queen of tear-jerking ballads -- decked out in weighty gold rapper chains, strutting across a stage belting out hip-hop tunes from the hood. Imagine, still, the Chanel-loving Caesars Palace singer working with golden boy rapper/producer Timbaland, the two of them souping up a new disc that marries his signature hip-hop sound with those big money-making ballads.

Strange but true, this unlikely pair have collaborated on Dion's upcoming album, which set hit stores this fall.

Will the public love Dion doing hip-hop? Apparently yes according to Timbaland.

After putting Nelly Furtado ("Promiscuous") and Justin Timberlake ("SexyBack") on the top of the pop heap for most of 2007, Timbaland has teamed up with the multi-million-album selling singer for her upcoming fall release. It's a strategic musical makeover -- one that blends Dion's power ballads with hip-hop, R&B and rock tunes penned by R. Kelly, Ne-Yo and other artists.

The question is will Dion's legions of ballad loving fans buy it -- or her new Timbaland-crafted sound?

"Celine's fans definitely aren't into hip-hop and R&B, so I don't know how they will receive this new album," says Justin Dumont, music director of Flow 93.5 FM in Toronto. "We could all be shocked. It's a really big stretch for her and it could completely backfire. But she and Timbaland are such incredible professionals. I couldn't imagine them releasing something that was bad."

"I can see Madonna working with Timbaland, which she is, and having something really great come out of it,," says David Corey, program director for Chum FM 104.5 in Toronto. "Celine doing hip-hop isn't something I'd think of given her career. Maybe it could be great. Maybe it's a case of Celine's people opting for the hottest producer, which Timbaland is at the moment."

Dion not new to makeovers

Dion certainly is not unfamiliar with the big payoff of a good makeover. In 1986, the 18-year-old fledgling francophone singer was ordered by her manager-turned-husband René Angélil to take 18 months off and revamp her image into one more palatable for the U.S. market. Her physical transformation included cutting her hair, plucking her eyebrows and having her teeth capped to cover the incisors sometimes ridiculed by the Quebec press. She also studied English to polish her performance on the talk show circuit.

Her boot camp efforts paid off in 1990, when the teen star turned adult chanteuse released "Unison" on Epic Records. Her duet with Peabo Bryson of the theme from Disney's "Beauty and the Beast," reached number one on the charts, scoring both a Grammy and an Academy Award. From that point on, the rise of Dion's career was meteoric, reaching an unprecedented high in 1997 when she recorded "Titanic's" chest-pounding theme song, "My Heart Will Go On."

For Dion, who has been making mega-millions most recently for her 600-show contract with Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Timbaland's edge combined with her extraordinary vocals could be the magic formula that puts the wife and mother back atop the music charts.

"Timbaland is a guy who's got a gift for writing catchy hooks and strong, catchy beats," says Corey. "The thing that makes him so interesting as an artist and a producer is that what he does is hip-hop, but not really. It's pop, but not really. It's hip-hop with a flair and that makes it appealing to listeners from either side of the fence."

Partnering with Timbaland a smart move

Choosing Timbaland to revive Dion's career was a smart move says Corey. "At any given moment there is always one hotter-than-hot producer and Timbaland is definitely that at the moment. Working with Justin Timberlake put him right up there and frankly when you've got Justin singing over Timbaland's great beat you just can't lose."

Born Timothy Z. Mosley, the Norfolk, Virginia native launched into his musical career in 1993. Better known at the time as disc jockey DJ Timmy Tim, Mosley's career soon took on a more successful shape after he became acquainted with Missy Elliott and MC Melvin (Magoo) Barcliff..

When Missy Elliott's girl group Sista was signed by DeVante Swing, Mosley went along for the ride, getting the new name Timbaland (after the popular hip-hop fashion boot) in the process.

Since then he has continued to work with Missy Elliott and has collaborated with a who's who of artists including as Aaliyah, Jay-Z, Ludacris, The Pussycat Dolls, Jennifer Lopez and Destiny's Child.

His unique blend of hip-hop and R&B rhythms earned major kudos in 1996 when R & B singer Ginuwine released his debut album, "Ginuwine...the Bachelor." Produced entirely by Timabland, its first single "Pony" gave the world a hint of what would later become the pounding, primal Timbaland sound.

Timbaland Tidbits :

  • Changed his name to Timbaland, after the hot, hip-hop fashion boots
  • Seven of Timbaland's singles received massive airplay in 2006, including Furtado's "Promiscuous," and Timberlake's "SexyBack" and "What Goes Around.../...Comes Around Interlude"
  • Calls himself a fan of Elton John and Fall Out Boy
  • Says his goal is to do universal, boundary-free music and take Top 40 tunes to the streets

I adore Canada but frankly, Celine is horrible and she sings like a fisherwoman on a public market.

Oh I just love Celine Dion! I think her music is fantastic and it brings a tear to my eye just thinking about it. She is such a lovely lady and a great Canadian. Long Live Celine!!!

Celine is just not right for this kind of style. She's only tapping into this because she needs to re-invent herself. Personally, I can't stand Celine Dion her music & fashion.

Celine has always had a special place in my heart. Every since I lost my first girlfriend to my best friend, I just think of her songs and they bring me back to life. I am going to try out for Canadian Idol and maybe one day I will be on stage singing a duet with her.

I am an anglophone who loves the early CDs of Celine Dion (French). I did not understand most of the song's lyric but they were relaxing to listen too. I also enjoy her English CDs but find that her range of voice has lessened as years go by and some of those high notes are unobtainable. That being said I think Celine should stick with what she does best. I agree that this move is an attempt to re-invent her style. Leave good enough alone.

Ditch the fashion and high vocals and put on some weight. Celine is looking more like a starved child in need of help.

Why do Canadians hate Céline? She is talented, successful and is known around the world as a CANADIAN. Céline has reinvented herself many times. That's what gives a performer longevity. She also happens to have one of the smartest managers in show business. Give her a break Canada!

Quite frankly, most of Celin's songs are R&Bish. It's not a far cry for her to sing something with "timba" beat. She has already done songs written by R. Kelly. It's not that much of a stretch.

Give me a break. I've got nothing completely against Celine Dion's music but she DOES NOT need to re-invent herself...again!! She sings at Vegas, does it get any better??? I think I smell greed.

The transition could prove to be a difficult one. She's been away for some time. However, she may also find a new fan base and still keep her loyal followers.
Timbaland is gold right now. She made a savvy business decision.

I've known Celine Dion since she was 12 years old, singing up a storm wherever she could just for experience. Celine has always wanted to be a star and now she's there, she wants to stay at the top. This LADY will do what she has to to keep alive. If she is taking direction from Timbaland and redesigning her presentation, then good luck to her and she'll probably make a success of it.

CELINE HAS BEEN CRITISIZED IN QUEBEC FOR SO LONG.YOU WOULD THINK THAT HER HOME WOULD BE THE MOST IN LOVE WITH HER AND DONT GET ME WRONG SOME ARE.MOST HATE HER MAYBE JEALOUSY OR EVEN RESENTMENT FOR NOT PERFORMING FOR THE PEOPLE WHO FIRST NOTICED HER TALENT. I AM ANXIOUS TO SEE WHAT WILL HAPPEN WITH THIS NEXT ALBUM I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT TO EXPECT BUT I DO WISH HER LUCK

Write a feature about "Trapped in the Closet." I love R. Kelly and I think he's a genius. Maybe you should see if he's willing to do an interview and talk about his new chapters.

Celine didn't get there on her own, thanks to her 100yrs old husband who help her career.

I think Céline has a wonderful voice but it's quite simple those who like it will buy it those who don't won't. As for if she should or shouldn't do it .. Hey why not if she's having fun! She certainly isn't doing it for the money....

It seems people in this day and age always have something to complain about concerning artists choices, lets be honest now, it's their choices and thier life and I don't see them telling you what to do or critising your bad or good choices. Go Celine! Take a risk lady and who the heck cares.

Celine is fantastic, her Vegas Show is awesome and as a person she is far more generous then one would think, she just doesn't like her charitable work to be broadcast all over the place. She is a professional so rest assured hooking up with Timbaland is a very carefully planned out venture and she will come out with an equally awesome sound.

Celine Dion & Timberland...I don't know about that. I can't picture Celine singing urban hip-hop bets.

I'm not a Celine fan by any stretch of the imagination, however, give credit where credit is due. She is a very talented vocalist and a proud Canadian. As for her working with Timbaland, I think she will do just fine and surprise everyone yet again. If you've listened to her early works, it's quite different then her present sounds.

This woman is the hardest working female in show-business, the world's best selling female artist ever (over 180 million albums sold), so why not? I think she wants to have fun while she goes on a world tour in 2008. Can't wait to hear something fresh from her. Amazing voice (even after all these years and she sure uses her voice a lot - think Vegas) and some people complain that she sings ballads and will still complain if she tries something different. So go ahead Celine and do whatever pleases you. I'll buy her new album because her CDs are always filled with great songs. She always said she can't do what Beyonce does and I'm sure she will find a balance between her old sound and the new Timba sound. Great move!

She is gold...funny very few like her...the media slam her...however she is the biggest selling female solo artist in history with album sales....again this album will break records...something new...why not...go Celine...I absolutely love you and everything you do...you are never the same...and you are one of the very rare REAL singers of the world!!!

I just love Céline and I think she should be admired not criticized for trying something new... Why not??? She doesn't need the money nor the success... She said in a recent interview that she is still very passionnate about singing and she is very excited about doing a new and different CD.
She is so talented she can do anything. I loved the rap song "Treat her like a lady" she did on her Talk about love album!
If Nelly or Madonna are allowed to change their styles why not CÉLINE????

Come on guys, give her a break!

CELINE COULD TOTALLY PULL OFF WORKING WITH TIMBALAND. HE JUST DOESNT DO HIPHOP. ON SONGS LIKE SAY IT RIGHT BY NELLY FURTADO THERES A SLOWER BALLAD STYLE WITH A NEWER RAW EDGY SOUND, AND CELINES AMAZING VOICE WOULD SOUND AMAZING ON A SONG SUCH AS THAT, ALSO ON JUSTINS MY LOVE, WHICH IS MERLY A BALLAD DRESSED UP IN URBAN BEATS. TIMBALANDS MUSIC EVOKES DIFFERENT MOODS, LISTEN TO THE END SECTION OF LOVE STONED WHERE IT SLOWS DOWN. AND CELINES VOICE HAS MANY DIFFERENT TEXTURES TO LAY ON TIMBALANDS RANGE OF BEATS AND SOUNDS. TECHNICALLY I CANT THINK OF A BETTER COLLABERATION. CELINE IS OVERLOOKED A LOT DUE TO BEING ASSOCIATED WITH BALLADS. THIS COULD SHOW HOW DIVERSE SHE IS.

Céline isn't planning on "Re-invention". She's just going to sing what she always sings. My guess is that Timbaland is going to create something for her, he wants to work with HER!

I don't think hip hop is her thing...espically the fact she's resently launch an amazing french album that trully represent who she is now which is a wise and smart lady!!! And going into hip hop I feel it will definitly not represent what she's become...but yet changes are good...but hip hop...I dont know!! It will be interesting!

Timbaland is gonna produce a song for Celine. It doesn't mean that song has to be a hip-hop song. Maybe in this case it's Timbaland who's gonna widen his horizons into Celine's world not vice versa. What makes you think that the song will be hip-hop? Have you heard it or what?
And frankly, hate her of love her, she is the best singer out there, she doesn't care about all of your negative comments. She handled them when she was 13, believe me they're not gonna affect her now that she is 39. Actually that what gave her an edge in her career : wasn't bothered by criticism. Anyway, there are more people who love Celine than thoses who hate her and I am sure she is happy w/ the fans she has estimated at 250 millions worldwide.

Celine Dion is such an amazing singer. Her voice and music is not suitable for hip hop or rock. Celine Dion should just stick to ballads and soft songs like My Heart Will Go On.

While ballads are her claim to fame, she has released singles like, "Misled" "Did you give enough love" and "Treat her like a lady" that have R&B/hip-hop flare. She also had her duet "I'm your angel" with R. Kelly that was a huge #1 single. This isn't too far a stretch. I've also been to various dance clubs and seen the dj's remix her ballad stuff into danceable tunes. Really I look forward to seeing what Timbo does with her and seeing if she'll have any creative imput.

This is definitely a great surprise. I am a fan of both Timbaland and Celine and I know that they will bring out something incredible. So many people are saying how Celine fans are not into hip hop. But Timbaland has a grand and versatile style that will definitely make this combination blend in perfectly! I anticipate this masterpiece.

Actually Celine wouldn't care about what's been said about her, I mean the negative ones. I have been a fan since 1996, and yes, I do think a few of her albums didn't catch my heart, ex.One Heart, A New Day Has Come. I like Timbaland's works, and I can't wait for the new album. Also, Celine does not need to "revive" her career, for she's got all she ever wanted. Celine said in an interview in Toronto that she will not do things that are not her, like Hip-hop. Celine is a cool and down to earth person, she's coming up with some new materials in her new album, and I think this is a great idea. To think that Celine chose to work with Timbaland is to make the album sell better is incorrect, I mean, If you have been singing ballads for 20+ years, wouldn't you want to try something new?

Maybe it's not such a bad idea. Look what happened to Nelly Furtado and Mariah Carey. They started adding hip hop flavor to their music and they are still successful, maybe even more than before.
