TORONTO — Latin pop superstar Enrique Iglesias has struck down recent tabloid rumours that his ever-shrinking girlfriend, retired Russian tennis pro and pinup Anna Kournikova, has an eating disorder.

"She's fine. I think because she stopped playing tennis, obviously her muscles are not as big as what they used to be, so immediately I think a lot of people maybe have said that she's lost a lot of weight," the 32-year-old Spanish heartthrob said Monday over the phone during a round of media interviews.

"But no, she's cool, she's healthy, she's good. She eats like crazy."

Iglesias, who has been linked with the formerly curvy Kournikova since 2001 and cast her in one of his videos, was in Toronto to promote his latest disc, "Insomniac," and mentor the top eight "Canadian Idol" contestants for an episode to air Monday night on CTV.

"I got off the plane and went straight to the studio. I was so, so tired that I thought I was going to fall asleep," the singer, who lives in Miami and was recently in Europe, said of Sunday's taping of the episode (the remark is fitting considering his album title stems from his lifelong battle with insomnia).

"Then when I got there, the kids were so great that it completely woke me up. The kids were really, really good. What amazed me about the kids was that...they were all unique. They were all very, very unique, which was cool and refreshing to see."

Iglesias, son of Spanish crooner Julio Iglesias, was coaching the contestants for an acoustic performance episode.

He admitted he doesn't play an instrument, so the musical director of the singing competition played piano for them.

Iglesias, who has 16 No. 1 Latin Billboard hits - more than any other artist in history -- also said he couldn't pick a favourite "Canadian Idol" contestant.

"It's hard to tell," he said. "They're all so good and they're all so different."

The Grammy winner's new single, "Do You Know? (The Ping Pong Song)," has been storming the charts since "Insomniac" was released last month.

But Iglesias wasn't planning on singing it during his live performance on "Idol" on Tuesday night, instead choosing his new single, "Somebody's Me," as well as an older hit for the results episode.

Iglesias, who has sold about 40 million albums worldwide in the past decade, has been in and out of Toronto several times in recent weeks promoting "Insomniac," which contains 12 songs in English and three in Spanish.

It took him three years to put the project together, and Iglesias says he might start touring for it in November.
