One-term Liberal MP Gary Merasty announced Wednesday he will step down at the end of next month to pursue an opportunity in the private sector.
The member for the Saskatchewan riding of Desnethe-Missinippi-Churchill River is the second Liberal MP to leave Parliament in as many weeks.
Last week, Vancouver MP Stephen Owen announced his resignation to take a job at the University of British Columbia.
But it was not immediately clear what position Merasty was pursuing.
"It is with a heavy heart that I announce my resignation from the Parliament of Canada today,'' Merasty said in a statement.
"I regret to be stepping down at this exciting time of renewal and revitalization for the Liberal party.''
He attributed his resignation to "family considerations.'' Merasty did not elaborate.
Liberal Leader Stephane Dion thanked Merasty for what he called "his tremendous contributions'' to the Liberal caucus, his constituents and all Canadians.
"During his time as an MP, Mr. Merasty has been an extraordinary representative for his constituents in northern Saskatchewan,'' Dion said.
Elected in January 2006, Merasty served the Liberal caucus as associate critic for Indian Affairs and special adviser on aboriginal outreach.
He also served on several Commons committees.

I applaud the budget, even though Health Care and education may stay unscathed. Sadly this cannot last and I worry to later this year where cuts will become enviable. If anything, this provides the Wildrose Alliance plenty of ammo when an election is called.
