It's Canada's 140th birthday and to celebrate the milestone, cities across the country are throwing out all the stops for the first long-weekend of the year. Parades, celebrities, concerts and fireworks are just some of the things planned but keep in mind, with all good street parties come bad street closures.
Organizers promise it will all be worth it. Here's a sneak peek at what to expect. We weren't able to gather info for every city across the country, so if we haven't included your community, look up your local government website and check the listings.
Ottawa
What better place to celebrate our nation's birthday than in the nation's capital? Ottawa plans its annual festival complete with concerts, picnics, fireworks, street performances and other activities. The party takes place at several locations across the city including Parliament Hill, Major's Hill Park, Jacques-Cartier park and Confederation Park. Expect some street closures.
The 90-minute noon show on Parliament Hill (to be televised and webcast) features Eva Avila, winner of Canadian Idol 2006, Gregory Charles, winner of the 2003 Félix Award for Concert of the Year, and the trio 'Shaye' featuring Kim Stockwood (N.L.), Tara MacLean (P.E.I.) and Damhnait Doyle (N.L.).
Charlottetown, PEI
Hailed as the largest birthday bash east of Ottawa, Charlottetown gets ready to rock with a live outdoor concert, buskers, a children's village and the largest fireworks display in Atlantic Canada. The celebration takes place in the picturesque Historic Charlottetown Waterfront.
Halifax/Dartmouth
Canada Day celebrations kick-off with a pancake breakfast and an official ceremony at Citadel Hill. The fun - and food - continue all day long. There will be the Great Canadian Family Picnic at the Halifax Common, and a Canada Day concert at Alderney Landing in Dartmouth. The night will wrap up with a stunning display of fireworks over the Halifax Harbour at 10 p.m. For those of you who wish to keep the car at home, Metro Transit is extending their bus and ferry service to accommodate the long weekend events.
Fredericton
It's all about celebrating civic pride at this Canada Day block party. The streets will close early and the fun starts at noon on as the entire community becomes one big party scene. There will be two stages, a Canada Day parade, lots of food and family-friendly activities. The fun carries on until dusk when the fireworks hit the night sky. Call 1-506-476-3866 ahead for road closures as the block party will take place on The Green along Pointe-Sainte Anne Boulevard and in Officers' Square.
Montreal
The city's lakefront will be jumping with music from live bands, parades, free birthday cake and even a marathon. The fun begins at 8 a.m. with the HBC Run in the Old Port of Montreal. A military parade is scheduled for 11 a.m. Then, families are invited for a free afternoon of acrobatic skiing demonstrations, line dancing and other fun activities. It all wraps up with a concert and fireworks. For further details click here.
Toronto
Downsview Park is the place to be this year as it hosts a 12-hour party, Rock the Park. Daytime will be family friendly with a petting zoo, rock climbing, video games and skateboarding with live musical acts by local bands as the backdrop. At night, contestants from the reality show "Rock Star" will be performing before the fireworks begin at 10 p.m. More fireworks and festivals can be found on CTV Toronto.
Vaughan
Juno-winner Keisha Chante and Juno nominee George are expected to dance and sing the night away July 1 at Mackenzie Glen District Park. The hit pop makers will wrap up a day of free family fun that includes inflatables, a water park and even reptilia. For a map and shuttle bus information, click here.
Winnipeg
The Forks is hosting this year's hottest Canada Day party with buskers, clowns, musicians, an Aboriginal dance troupe and sand sculpting clinics. For your convenience, the city is also offering free shuttle service linking a variety of Canada Day celebrations in the downtown core, the Exchange District, Fort Gibraltor, St. Boniface Museum/Cathedral and Osborne Village.
Saskatoon, SK
Canada Day gets off on the right foot with a buffet breakfast in Diefenbaker Park. The fun continues with a flea market, food vendors, amusement rides, birthday cake and a reaffirmation of Citizenship. The firework display is set for dusk. However, the city will be swooning all weekend as the Saskatchewan Jazz Festival is also happening this weekend.
Regina, SK
Canada Day celebrations are planned along the north and south shores of Wascana Lake in the centre of the city. There will be lots of activities for children, great musical entertainment for all ages, food and craft vendors, and a spectacular fireworks show to close the festivities. Please keep in mind Regina Transit will not be running on July 1.
Edmonton
Never mind Canada Day. At the historic Fort Edmonton Park, they're old enough to celebrate Dominion Day as this special occasion used to be called. The day starts out with a treat for antique car enthusiasts as more than 150 collectibles from Western Canada and North-western United States are on display.
There's also a 1920s midway and exhibition where several memorable historic moments will be recreated. The day wouldn't be complete without some 1920s dance lessons and some live entertainment.
Calgary
Calgary's festivities will start out on Prince's Island Park at noon with craft tents, games, face-painting and lots of food. After 6 p.m., the celebrations will carry on at Olympic Plaza with live musical performances from Los Morenos, Jack Semple and The Jim Cuddy Band. The finale promises to be just as exciting as a fireworks display will light up the sky to the theme of past Juno nominees to welcome the much-anticipated arrival of the awards ceremony in Calgary next year. While no road closures are expected, a shuttle bus will be available to accommodate participants traveling from one event to another.
Yellowknife
The city is hosting a Canada Day Parade to mark the country's milestone birthday. Families are invited to come out to the grounds of Yellowknife Community Area for free give-aways, birthday cake, games and live music featuring the finalists from Music in the park. Local groups will also be on hand to perform acrobatic gymnastics and dance routines.
Iqaluit, NU
Music, games, food and a parade will mark Canada's birthday in this capital city. The day begins with a pancake breakfast and flea market followed by a colourful parade. Take part in the civic ceremony and dance the day away to live entertainment.
You also have an opportunity to take on the arts with Alianait Arts Festival. Alianait is a newly formed multicultural arts festival which incorporates Aboriginal Day, Multicultural Day, St. Jean Baptiste Day and Canada Day. It celebrates its heritage by showing a variety of independent films, art displays, theatre productions, and concerts.
Vancouver
This city prides itself on holding the biggest Canada Day Party in the west. The day is jam-packed with events from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. all taking place at Vancouver's Harbourfront. They include a national anthem singing competition, a citizenship ceremony, an outdoor adventure zone, a Canadian Forces zone and more. This year, the theme centres around bringing people together. Officials are cautioning people there will be limited access to parking and most local roads will be closed. They are suggesting taking transit instead.
Victoria
The celebration, dubbed Canada Day: Dawn to Dark Downtown, promises to offer a variety of activities for all ages. For the athletes, the HBC Run is a perfect way to start the day. For those wishing for a more mellow Canada Day, there are several leisurely guided historic walking tours scheduled. Hop on a free trolley ride through downtown and enjoy street performers and an artisan market. The Inner Harbour is where the action is at night as the destination of the city's liveliest fireworks display.

I applaud the budget, even though Health Care and education may stay unscathed. Sadly this cannot last and I worry to later this year where cuts will become enviable. If anything, this provides the Wildrose Alliance plenty of ammo when an election is called.
