TORONTO Newlyweds Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott are arguably in enemy territory, sitting in the city's posh Four Seasons Hotel to discuss their reality show "Tori and Dean: Inn Love,'' airing soon on Slice.
This is Mary Jo Eustace country, after all _ Eustace being the wife dumped by McDermott in favour of Spelling two years ago in a high-profile breakup that was prime fodder for the U.S. celebrity tabloids.
Eustace, a Toronto-based radio and television personality, even has an essay in the new anthology "The Other Woman,'' detailing when she first learned her husband was in love with Spelling, the former star of "Beverly Hills 90210.''
But Spelling is sanguine when asked about the scathing media attention she received in the wake of the McDermott-Eustace split. She too left her husband of just over a year for McDermott.
"I've always gotten negative press, my whole life,'' Spelling says with a shrug. "So you know, what's one more circumstance to throw in? It's kind of what I've dealt with in my career, the `build you up to knock you down' sort of thing. You brush it off, laugh it off and it makes you work harder.''
McDermott, as well, seemed serene about being cast as the cad.
"It comes with the territory. With the bad comes a lot of good. I'm just so happy now that things are just moving in such a positive direction for everyone and I'm just concentrating on my two boys and my wife and the show _ I just keep moving in a positive direction.''
"Tori and Dean: Inn Love,'' a six-part reality series that chronicles the couple's purchase of a bed-and-breakfast, premieres on July 3. For those who can't get enough of Spelling, it's sure to please: her marriage, her pregnancy, her inheritance and her new job as an innkeeper are all on proud display.
Spelling and McDermott were in Toronto on Monday, in fact, not just to promote the show _ they're also here shooting scenes with McDermott's family for Season 2. Their three-month-old baby, Liam, will also figure prominently in the second season.
"It's the ideal job, because the whole family gets to work together. I can't think of anything better than to have us all there,'' Spelling said. "It's brutal for us to not be together, so being able to work together has just been amazing.''
"Making breakfast and changing diapers at the same time _ as long as you don't get it mixed up,'' McDermott jokes.
The pair, in fact, are still clearly on a baby high _ Liam travels everywhere with them as they shoot the second season of "Inn Love,'' and was sleeping peacefully in a room upstairs as they met with the media.
"He is just tremendous,'' Spelling, dressed in a loose-fitting multi-coloured mini dress, says with a genuine sigh of contentment as she gazes at her husband. "We did good.''
McDermott reports that Liam's older brother, Jack, his son with Eustace, is also enthralled with the baby.
"He adores him. The first night we arrived, I picked up Jack from school, he ran into the hotel room and made a beeline for him ... he's really good with babies,'' McDermott says, pointing out that Jack has a younger sister, Lola, who was six weeks old when he and Eustace split up.
The couple are looking to buy a residence in Toronto, they say.
"We would love to buy something up here because when I come up to visit my boy, we're always in hotels,'' McDermott says.
"That's why we're working really hard so we'll be able to afford one,'' Spelling adds.

I applaud the budget, even though Health Care and education may stay unscathed. Sadly this cannot last and I worry to later this year where cuts will become enviable. If anything, this provides the Wildrose Alliance plenty of ammo when an election is called.
