Canadians set a record high in overseas travel in September but tourists visiting Canada declined, says a new report.
After a two-month decline, overseas travel hit the year's seventh record high in September with an estimated 576,000 trips, Statistics Canada reported on Monday.
However, due in part to the rising Canadian dollar, the number of visitors from overseas countries declined in September, down 0.8 per cent from August. Travel declined in six of Canada's top 12 overseas markets.
The number of visitors from Japan fell 9.6 per cent when compared to August. Meanwhile, China had the largest increase at 13.7 per cent.
Americans also took slightly fewer trips to Canada during September. The numbers were down 0.6 per cent as fewer than 2.4 million Americans made their way north.
Same-day road trips into Canada saw only 1.1 million Americans cross the border during September, down 0.9 per cent. The decline marked the seventh monthly decrease and set another record low.
In contrast, Canadians took more than 1.9 million same-day road trips, up 0.5 per cent, into the United States.
Overall, Canadians took 3.4 million trips into the U.S. in September, a gain of 0.4 per cent from August.
In September, the Canadian dollar was up 0.2 per cent from August and it also gained against the Japanese yen, the British pound sterling and the euro.

I applaud the budget, even though Health Care and education may stay unscathed. Sadly this cannot last and I worry to later this year where cuts will become enviable. If anything, this provides the Wildrose Alliance plenty of ammo when an election is called.
