FORT HOOD, Texas — A Texas soldier and a marine born in Canada were killed during combat operations in Iraq, the military said Monday.

Marine Sgt. Jonathan Simpson, 25, of Rockport, died Saturday during combat operations against enemy forces in Al Anbar province.

Simpson was assigned to 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division at Camp Pendleton, Calif.

A flight navigator who left for Iraq in September, Simpson joined the marines about five years ago, said his father, Frank Simpson, of Rockport.

Simpson was born in Canada and had dual Canadian and U.S. citizenship. Services will likely be in Quebec, where his mother lives, his father told the Corpus Christi Caller-Times.

Army 2nd Lt. Johnny Craver, 37, of McKinney, died Friday in Baghdad when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle.

Craver was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 4th Infantry Division at Fort Hood.

A ranger and ranger instructor, Craver was close to earning a master's degree in business management. He had expected to be home from Iraq in November, family members told the Denton Record-Chronicle.

Craver leaves behind his wife, Natalie, and three children, Savannah, 12, Caelen, eight, and Emma, three.
