Liberal MP Belinda Stronach refused to comment Tuesday on allegations that she was involved in an affair with hockey tough guy Tie Domi but she did say she felt targeted by a media "double-standard."
"I'm not going to comment on it at this point in time, whether it's true or false," Stronach told CTV's Mike Duffy Live. "I'm not going to comment on my personal life at this moment."
She said it was a matter between the courts and the Domi family.
"It's right now a matter that is before the courts between two individuals and they need to sort it out so I'm not going to make any comments at this time," said Stronach.
But Stronach did comment when asked if a man in her position would receive the same level of media scrutiny.
"I'd like to say in a country like Canada that there isn't but I do believe there is a double standard," she said. "It's very unfortunate for other women in this country that want to seek political office and make a contribution."
On Tuesday morning, Domi and his wife reached a temporary settlement in their divorce proceedings -- less than an hour before the case was set to be heard before Toronto's Superior Court.
The case attracted a great deal of media attention after Leanne Domi accused her husband of "committing adultery" with Stronach.
Speaking outside the court, Leanne Domi's lawyer, Julie Hannaford, said the consent order was reached quickly because the couple wanted to protect the interests of their children.
"This matter has been very acrimonious, there is a great deal of sadness by Mrs. Domi and by Mr. Domi and we are pleased that we arrived at a consent (order) that we believe will be beneficial to the children as well as to the parties,'' Hannaford told reporters.
Neither Domi nor his wife of 13 years appeared in court. They have three children aged between seven and 12.
Leanne Domi is seeking spousal and child support from her husband's $1-million annual income.
In documents filed before the court, she claimed her husband promised to give her money and a house if she kept quiet about his affair with Stronach.
The hockey star's "intimate sexual relationship" with the Newmarket-Aurora MP caused their marriage to deteriorate, as well as his relationship with their three children, Leanne Domi alleges.
She also says the former Toronto Maple Leaf player told her if she did not hire a lawyer he would give her $1 million in cash and a $1.5-million house.
If she contacted a lawyer, however, she "would get nothing."
The documents also claim Tie Domi "is anxious and desperate to ensure that Belinda is not brought into the divorce."
None of the allegations have been proved in court.
Leanne Domi's divorce application was filed Sept. 18 -- just one day before Tie Domi announced his retirement from the NHL.
"It is not an easy time for our family right now," she told the Toronto Sun Monday. "We are coping as best we can."
Tie Domi said he would not comment on his personal life and his agent said Monday the hockey star would have nothing to say while the matter was before the courts.
Stronach in Ottawa
Before her interview with Mike Duffy Live on Monday, Stronach went about her regular routine in Ottawa.
This isn't the first time the personal life of the multimillionaire heiress to the auto-parts giant Magna International has made headlines. In May 2005, as a sitting Conservative member of Parliament, she crossed the floor to the Liberals, effectively jilting boyfriend and fellow Tory Peter MacKay, the current foreign affairs minister.
She's also been splashed out in pictures in the U.S. tabloids, for her friendship with former U.S. president Bill Clinton.
Leanne Domi was seeking spousal support of $30,000 and child support of more than $15,000 a month, custody of the children with scheduled visits for Tie Domi, exclusive possession of the family home and the right to sell it and an order that his assets be frozen.
Though the application states it is not necessary to name names in cases of alleged adultery, the first line of Leanne Domi's allegations reads: "Tie Domi has committed adultery with Belinda Stronach."
She says she believes the relationship began when her husband started working on Stronach's political campaign in January, even though, "Tie had little to no interest in politics, and in fact, had not the slightest idea about political ideology," she says in the document filed in court.
As her husband began spending more time with Stronach, Leanne Domi alleges he also began spending less time with their children, aged seven to 12, missing their hockey games in favour of, in one instance, attending a Toronto International Film Festival charity gala with Stronach.
The divorce application cites instances of Tie Domi allegedly lying about his whereabouts, one of which she confronted him about with evidence from the security cameras at their home.
After the confrontation, Leanne Domi alleges her husband had all the cameras deactivated because he "didn't want to be watched," though he was the one who originally insisted on the system.
Stronach and Tie Domi 'walking hand-in-hand'
On July 22, after receiving a call from a friend who said she saw Stronach and Tie Domi walking hand-in-hand down Madison Avenue in Manhattan, Leanne Domi said she tearfully implored her husband to explain, "Why he'd done what he'd done."
He responded, "I am so sorry Leanne ... just leave Belinda out of this," the court document says.
That was the day they separated as Leanne Domi asked her husband to leave their house. That's when she alleges in the filed documents the financial threats began.
"I know nothing of our family finances, except that there is staggering, enormous debt, almost all of which is in my name," Leanne Domi admits in the documents.
"Despite the fact that Tie has told me about deals he has done in the past that have netted him huge commissions, and "deals that are in the works" that will net him huge commissions, I am being told repeatedly by him that there is "nothing" for the family, and that I had "better get used to it."
The application also contains allegations that Tie Domi's "trysts" with Stronach were not his first indiscretions.
At times he would stay out until 3:30 a.m., come home reeking of alcohol and smoke, and once, after the year-end party for the hockey team, he didn't come home for two full days.
Leanne Domi also alleges in the document that in the midst of an 18-month period when Domi had moved out and the couple was attending counselling, he was seeing actress Tia Carrere, known for the television show Relic Hunter and her role in Wayne's World.
Leanne Domi also alleges Tie Domi is now living in a condominium on the Magna golf course, the company owned by Stronach's father, Frank.
