After using his exposure on Canadian Idol to build one of the most successful careers to emerge from the show, Rex Goudie returned to the Idol stage Tuesday night as a beacon of just what is possible with a little screen time.

A bona fide Idol success story following the platinum sales of his single "Run," the Season 3 runner-up played the song on the results show, then offered the Top 4 some fitting advice: you don't need to win to be successful.

"The best thing in my mind is never give up," Goudie told Eye on Idol after the show. "You never know what could happen. If this was your dream to do this, don't give up on it. If you were meant to do it, you will."

He speaks from experience, having done as well after landing in second place on the show as he could have expected to do as its winner.

He followed up the season by heading on a cross-country tour with winner Melissa O'Neil -- who is also his girlfriend -- and releasing his Under the Lights album to resounding success.

The album received Juno nominations for artist and album of the year and "Run" went platinum, but until his appearance on Idol this week, Goudie had only seen copies of the platinum record on other people's walls.

"I'd seen... that in everybody else's studio," said Goudie, beaming after Idol host Ben Mulroney handed him with his own copy of the platinum disc while on air. "I was like 'how come everybody got one and I don't?' It kind of felt bad for a while."

But despite the excitement of the presentation, Goudie says he'd rather see it sent home to Burlington, N.L, where the people who supported his success from day one can enjoy it.

"I'd rather... put it up in the town hall or my mom put it up at her house," he said, eschewing any suggestion of hanging it on the wall of his downtown Toronto apartment. "My apartment is my only place where I can be completely normal, so why not send it home and have my mom and dad appreciate it."

With his next album expected out on Dec. 5, the easy-going Goudie has spent most of his time lately writing and recording, part of a busy lifestyle that hasn't stopped since he began his Idol journey over a year ago.

But while he's stepped into a new world since his time on the show, he says being at Tuesday's episode made him feel like just yesterday he was standing beside Mulroney waiting to find out if he was the one being eliminated.

"It's pretty cool to come back, especially on results night, because I can still feel the tension of last year," he said. "You still feel your heart pounding... for the people on stage. It's like 'I know what they're feeling. That sucks!'"
