Eye on Idol

In between learning she'd be seeing one of her original plays in print and being voted off Canadian Idol, Steffi DiDominicantonio has had a whirlwind of a week.

Eliminated at Top 5, Steffi told Eye on Idol she's leaving her summer on the show with a smile on her face and a lot to look forward to.

"You know what? I'm going home proud," said the Ottawa 17-year-old known as much for her penchant toward the dramatic as for her signature hair bows. "This show has given me the most exposure that I could have gotten. Come one, who would have thought I'd get to Top 5? In my head it's a miracle."

Just days before the Top 5 results show, when Steffi was voted off after facing Eva Avila in the bottom two, she found out a play she had written had won a juried young playwright's contest and would be staged and printed in a magazine.

Un Ruban Rose, which translates to "a pink ribbon," is described by Steffi as a four-person show about a girl who is plagued by something in her past.

"She's running away from it and I'm not telling you anything else... It's really quirky," she said.

But while she says she loves writing -- she also writes and performs children's puppet shows with her friend Ben Durocher -- the multi-talented Steffi D would also like to pursue acting, music and everything else that comes her way.

"I want to do absolutely everything that I can," she said. "Who knows? If it's going to be a CD, it's a CD. If it's going to be plays, Broadway, television (or) if it's going to be playwriting... I can't wait to stretch myself like that."

The constantly keen performer said she was expecting her elimination at least a week before it came. But, instead of dwelling on her eventual end, she made goodbye gifts - signature Steffi D hair ribbons for the judges and remaining competitors.

"I cut up three yellow ones for the boys, I cut up one pink one for Eva and I cut up four green ones for the judges," she said, beaming. "I was prepared to make it the most glamourous (exit) I could make it. I really wanted to leave on a super-high note."

Her farewell performance -- Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots were made for Walking" -- hit the note she'd been hoping for. She handed out her bows, strutted through the audience and generally put her all into her last minutes on the Idol stage before returning for the finale with the rest of the Top 10.

She says she's already looking forward to reuniting with the rest of the finalists.

"I can not wait. When it gets to a group that small and you're five people, it feels like there are people missing," she said, noting she's much more excited about her return to the show than the impending school year. "I just need to try to focus on school for another year, and then -- let's do it. Hopefully something will happen for me this year."
