OTTAWA Montreal MP Denis Coderre is expected to announce Wednesday that he won't be joining the crowded field of candidates vying to become federal Liberal leader.
Coderre says he'll reveal his decision on his way into the Liberals' weekly caucus meeting
He's refusing to elaborate or to comment on widespread rumours that he intends to endorse Bob Rae, the former NDP premier of Ontario; there has also been speculation that Coderre will throw his support behind rookie Toronto MP and acclaimed academic Michael Ignatieff.
Coderre's backing would be a boost to any candidate; the former Chretien-era minister is known as an effective organizer and is well-connected with a wide network of Liberals in Quebec.
Ten candidates have so far formally joined the race to succeed Paul Martin.
Vancouver MP Hedy Fry will become the eleventh on Thursday; at least two more -- Toronto-area MP John McCallum and Senator Celine Hervieux-Payette -- are still considering their options.

I applaud the budget, even though Health Care and education may stay unscathed. Sadly this cannot last and I worry to later this year where cuts will become enviable. If anything, this provides the Wildrose Alliance plenty of ammo when an election is called.
