OTTAWA -- The prime minister and all three federal opposition leaders flipped out Wednesday, all in a good cause.

Paul Martin and the other leaders flipped burgers at a fund-raising barbecue in support of victims of two devastating hurricanes in the United States.

Martin, Conservative Leader Stephen Harper, Bloc Quebecois Leader Gilles Duceppe and NDP Leader Jack Layton sweated over smoky barbecues on Parliament Hill as part of the Hands Across the Border campaign to support the Canadian Red Cross.

More than 2,000 people paid $10 each for a hamburger, chips, a drink and a piece of cake, but many donated much more, raising a total of $125,000 at the event.

The money went to the Canadian Red Cross to support its relief efforts for victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita that flooded large portions of the U.S. Gulf states and left tens of thousands homeless.

U.S. Ambassador David Wilkins thanked the crowd and said he will never forget the generosity of Canadians.

"You were there early, you were there eagerly in our time of need and we will not forget you,'' he said.

He said Canada's response was overwhelming.

"We will not forget your wonderful friendship.''

The Red Cross says Canadians have so far donated $15 million for hurricane relief.
