A well-known Quebec producer was sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison after pleading guilty to five charges of sexually abusing two children, one of whom was 11 when the abuse began.

Quebec court Judge Robert Sansfacon sentenced 64-year-old Guy Cloutier on Monday, calling his crimes "pernicious" and "insidious," CTV's Jed Kahane reported.

Cloutier is a prominent figure in Quebec for his work as entertainment manager with high-profile Quebec singers, and also as the father of popular personality Veronique Cloutier.

The sentencing comes about a month after he pleaded guilty to sexual assault, indecent assault and having sex with a female under 14 who was not his wife, Canadian Press reported.

The abuse of the 11-year-old girl, who is now 35, included sexual intercourse and ended about 15 years ago, Kahane reported.

Cloutier also pleaded guilty to the charge of indecent assault of another victim who was between 12 and 17 at the time. The victim's gender has not been disclosed.

His defence lawyer asked for house arrest or a suspended sentence while the Crown recommended a five-year prison term.

Cloutier's lawyer Sophie Bourque said he will not be appealing the sentence to prevent the victims from more suffering.

"The sentence handed down by Judge Sansfacon is a severe one given in difficult circumstances," Bourque said outside the courtroom.

"The instructions from Mr. Cloutier are not to appeal the sentence."

Cloutier apologized to one of the victims, who is now 35, after he pleaded guilty last month.

"I profoundly regret all the harm that I have done," he said outside the courtroom.

"I acknowledge my crimes. I pleaded guilty and I am sorry from the bottom of my heart."

But in his ruling, Judge Sansfacon said Cloutier was more interested in his own survival than that of the victims.

He cited wire tap evidence from earlier this year that caught Cloutier offering one victim money to keep quiet.
