Ottawa has announced five new appointments to the Senate, including Vancouver mayor Larry Campbell, and former prime minister Brian Mulroney's chief of staff, Hugh Segal.
Also named were former Quebec MPs Andrée Champagne and Dennis Dawson of Quebec, along with Winnipeg businessman Rod Zimmer.
Campbell, Dawson and Zimmer will sit as members of the Liberal Party; Champagne and Segal will sit as Conservatives.
Campbell, 57, one of the most popular mayors in Vancouver history, announced in June that he wouldn't run again. A former drug squad member and B.C. chief coroner, Campbell is the inspiration for the popular Canadian TV drama, "Da Vinci's Inquest," and also worked as a script writer on the show.
Champagne, 66, who was a well-known actress before turning to politics, was a Tory MP between 1984 and 1993 and a junior cabinet minister under Mulroney from 1984 to 1986.
Segal served Mulroney in the early 1990s and also worked for former Ontario premier Bill Davis. He also ran in the 1998 Tory leadership race, which he lost to Clark.
There are still five vacancies in the 105-seat Senate. Two senators are still needed from Quebec, two from New Brunswick, and one from Prince Edward Island.
Later this week, Prime Minister Paul Martin is expected to announce a new Governor-General to replace Adrienne Clarkson.
With the new appointments, the party standing in the 105-seat Senate is as follows:
- Liberal: 65
- Conservative: 24
- Progressive Conservative: 5
- Independent: 5
- NDP: 1
- Vacant: 5

I applaud the budget, even though Health Care and education may stay unscathed. Sadly this cannot last and I worry to later this year where cuts will become enviable. If anything, this provides the Wildrose Alliance plenty of ammo when an election is called.
